This small herd of deer were found in Robert C. Wetton's back yard. He helps the deer population out a bit, by putting out feed for them. The added bonus is of course a front row seat to watching them in action. Looks like these deer may have an altercation going on.

The last two photos were snapped by Keith Meyers somewhere along M-26 near Jacob Falls, but could be anywhere along the highway, since it's a fairly common sight to see while driving along. Not everyone gets the opportunity to stop and snap decent pictures like these while on the fly, though. That little deer in photo #3 sure is high-stepping across that road.

So why'd the deer cross the road? Simple: to get to the other side on the Pasty Cam! :->

Love the pictures. The pictures of the deer on the snowy- covered road are beautiful. ;O)

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Saturday, January 24, 2009 - 09:07 am:

great pics of the lovely deer in your area.

Don't know if anyone else shares my opinion, but I think the speed limit on 26 betw Eagle River and Copper Harbor is WAAAAY to high. As can be seen in the pics, there is not really a shoulder to retreat to. Deer and bear are so common along that stretch. People in a hurry could take 41. 55 mph seems exceedingly excessive to me for that road. Not to mention the 'slow down and enjoy the beauty' phenomenon.

I have had a few close encounters, as have my children and other relatives, so I guess it's an issue close to my heart.

Beautiful Pictures!

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Saturday, January 24, 2009 - 09:27 am:

I ALWAYS THOUGHT 55 MILES PER HOUR WAS WAAAYYY TO FAST FOR THAT AREA. PEOPLE DO NEED SLOW DOWN AND ENJOY THE AREA OR HAVE THE SPEED LIMIT CHANGED. ;O)

MY UNCLE AND I TOOK A RIDE TO COPPER HARBOR ONE TIME AND HE WAS DOING THE 55 MILES PER HOUR AND A LITTLE FASTER AT TIMES AND I ASKED HIM TO SLOW DOWN A LITTLE BIT. WHEN HE WOULD NOT SLOW DOWN AND WE TOOK A CURVE AND A DIP, I LOST EVERYTHING INSIDE THE CAR. I AM QUITE SURE EVERYBODY KNOWS WHAT I MEAN.;O(

SSSOOO, THIS SPRING AND SUMMER SLOW DOWN AND ENJOY THE SCENERY.

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Saturday, January 24, 2009 - 09:38 am:

Good idea, Maija. We drive that stretch of road quite a bit, and rarely make it to 55 because, more often than not, we share it with a deer or two.

By the way, my apologies to everyone looking for Day in History the past 2 days. As you may have noted in the discussion this week, my main computer died. It had all the production environment that I use each morning to publish everything. The new computer arrived quickly, but it has taken the better part of 2 days to reload software, restore from backups, etc. To complicate matters, some of the old tools I've used over the past 14 years editing this website are not compatible with Vista (learning curve with new software).

The end result is a much better set of tools to publish the Pasty Cam each day. Today I'll to catch up Day in History and get a Pasty Cameo ready for tomorrow's Shoebox Memory.

A good day to be inside :o)

What I have to watch out for in that area is bicyclists. (No, I'm not saying they shouldn't be there.)

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Saturday, January 24, 2009 - 09:52 am:

Maija...I know what you mean. I have traveled that road by car and motorcycle and occasionally try to do 55 Miles an hour. Although it is an adrenaline rush, it does seem unsafe and rather inappropriate for that kind of scenic road.

Also, I always thought the deer crossed the road because the chickens went to David's house for the winter down in Tennessee.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Saturday, January 24, 2009 - 10:03 am:

Maybe I am wrong, but I always thought a speed limit of 55, 65, 70, whichever, meant you could drive any speed up to that but not over the limit unless a minimum speed limit was posted. That's how I drive anyway, maybe the reason for never having a speeding ticket on my car/motorcycle driving record.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Saturday, January 24, 2009 - 10:48 am:

Actually in most parts of the West the speed limit is 75 and even 80 in West Texas on I-10. And in a few of those places if your driving at 10-15 under the speed limit the police will stop you for a couple reasons; 1 that you may be holding up the flow of traffic but also 2, because most illegals from Mexico, thinking they wont get stopped, will drive much slower than the speed limit to avoid being noticed. I believe it's New Mexico where the minimum speed limit on freeways is 20% of the posted speed limit, which makes it 60.

So my advice is to drive at or near the speed limit, unless your on M26 between Eagle River and Copper Harbour, then just relax and take in the view....... ;-)

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Saturday, January 24, 2009 - 11:03 am:

Great pics. I had no idea that was M-26 with all that snow. Beautiful drive, as I drove as part of the Lake Superior Circle Tour in 2005.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Saturday, January 24, 2009 - 11:37 am:

I was pulled over by a Michigan State Trooper back in the 70s for doing 70 on a 55 mph road. He told as long as I don't go 10 mph over the speed limit, the police won't even bat an eye.
Since then I have always driven 9 mph over the speed limit (except residential areas) an have not been pulled over since. Even on I-75 I drive by radar cops doing 79 in a 70mph zone without slowing down...no problema. Caution: results may vary:-0

I like today's "Day in History" Charlie. Better than one of those Under Construction Signs ;0)

Great pictures today! Thanks, Mary, for your discerning eye and good selections! To Robert and Keith, thanks for sharing these super shots.

My screen saver is now the third picture. Love the depth and subtle shades that you captured, Keith.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, January 24, 2009 - 05:34 pm:

Those are very cool pictures today, thank you!

As far as speed limits and setting your speed: there is no way we can drive 55 on that stretch of road without my getting car sick with all of the curves, etc. But, it is a gorgeous road; I can't imagine wanting to go so fast you can't enjoy the scenery or you miss various waterfalls, or whatever!

On highway speeds, or the driving speeds on any road, for that matter: our local police (mid-Michigan) make a big deal that they can ticket you for going just 1 mph over the posted limit. Most won't ticket you for going up to 5 mph over, but they can, especially if you are doing something else that catches their eye. Another thing to consider: your tires can affect your speedometer, a new tire will be larger in diameter than an older one, so the speedometer will read slower than you are actually going. We know that our 2 cars' speedometers are different. You have to allow for these differences when you are driving, or you could end up with a ticket.

Speaking of tickets: almost all of the kids that I know of who have gone to Tech and had vehicles at school have gotten at least one ticket on either M-28 (they love to get you close to Seney) or on US 41 (around Marquette) or, of course, on US 2.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Saturday, January 24, 2009 - 06:50 pm:

I got busted on the Seney stretch by "Rebecca" She pulled me over for 10 mph over. I won't bore you with the details of the probs I had on that trip and why I was speeding. Anyway, she spoke to me somewhat disrespectfully, and I held my temper. (two very young kids in the car.) Then as she walked away I said, to my shame, "yeah, whatever." She heard me and gave me a glance back, but opted not to bust me again. (the kids, I assume) Then I felt SOOOOO guilty for my inappropriate behavior in front of my two young ones, but I will always remember Rebecca, and so does my daughter. (son was too young) Wonder if by rare chance she looks here.

By Carole (Carole) on Saturday, January 24, 2009 - 08:03 pm:

MY very favorite route between Eagle River and Eagle Harbor. Have been taking that route since I was about 4 or 5 years old. (I am now a senior..sigh). Grandparents had a camp right around the turn in the road from where the monks now have their church. AND I do NOT drive 55 or whatever. I go slow to enjoy natures beauty.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Saturday, January 24, 2009 - 09:18 pm:

A few years ago my brother, the smartest man in the world, and I were heading to Hubbell to visit with my sister. I was driving and was pulled over by a State Trooper. He said I was doing 95 mph. I looked at him and said I guess I was if you say so. I then told him that my son is a police officer. According to my brother I cried out don't give me a ticket my son is a cop. The Trooper was very polite and kind and told me to slow down. This was on the Seney Flats also. Brother said I only got away without the ticket since the officer didn't want to watch a grown man cry. I was driving my brothers van at the time, and he wont let me live it down.

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Saturday, January 24, 2009 - 09:31 pm:

Driving that Sceney stretch makes a person do crazy things at times ;O).

Those deer look like they own the road and are having so much fun. In a way- they DO own the road. Does anybody think the deer ever get tickets? ha! ha! ha! My sweetie read this over my shoulder and said, 'Yes dear, they get tickets.' I never got a ticket in my life.

By Michael Austin (Mjayeh) on Saturday, January 24, 2009 - 10:03 pm:

My brother was feeding deer here in da L.P. until it was banned, I loved watching them come in and feed from his deck.

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Sunday, January 25, 2009 - 12:20 am:

while attending NMU from 76-80, I had 15 points and was on a first name basis with all the troopers, looking back now, I'll blame it on my wife (girlfriend at the time), she was still back home then, lol. Before I get a lecture, I've had a clean driving record for many years since.

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Sunday, January 25, 2009 - 12:22 am:

BTW, Mikie you got me beat, the best I was ever nailed for was 92 in a 55, lol.
