Shawn and Brian Malone got up early to catch what's called the Perigee Moon as it was disappearing for the day. The term Perigee, refers to the distance the moon is from the earth and in this case means when the moon is at its closest point to what we call home. When in this stage, the moon appears larger, as in the second shot from Shawn and Brian. It's so big and round there, that it looms over the town of Marquette like a giant ball about to drop. NASA says that this will be the biggest moon of 2009 and that it is 14% larger and 30% brighter than a typical full moon. I hope you were lucky enough to get a glimpse of this natural phenomenon.

I'm trying to decide if I'd prefer marquette or houghton as my favorite place to live if I could choose anywhere in Michigan. Or, maybe munising. Great pics Malones.

Reminds me of a big pizza pie (and a song). Maybe I should go eat my breakfast.

Jeff, over the years, I have traveled and lived in many places, and I would say the Copper Country is the very best place to live. I grew up in Dickinson County and I went to college at Northern Michigan University, and it is in the Copper Country that I found the most extraordinary scenery in the UP(breathtaking at times). Plus, the people in the Copper Country are absolutely wonderful. Again, thanks for starting my day with these great winter morning views of my favorite Great Lake.

Ah yes, now if we could only take the Shiras Power Plant (necessary as it is)out of the picture, the moon and Mount Marquette would look just that much prettier. Thanks for the pictures of my hometown. I always feel I've made it back when I drive down M-28 and see the veiw no matter what time of day. Very few places in the USA let you see your town from a such distance while driving. It's kind of the same feeling when you look for your house below the plane when you fly in.

Jeff, I would love to live in any one of those three places, Munising, Marquette or Houghton. Spend my vacations up in all three areas but it is never enough time to see and enjoy everything.

Hi I initially missed that the top picture was also of moonset; I thought "Hm, that's a nice bright winter scene". I think we had cloud cover downstate at the time (January 10).

The second picture is the real first sign of going "back home", the next was the Bunny Bread sign in downtown Marquette..When going back to visit with grandma my kids wanted to be awakened when we got along the Lake Superior shore near Marquette.

Alex, I know what you mean about your morning not being complete without seeing the picture of the day. I'm checking in a little late today, but my day would not be complete without it, so better late than never. The pics today are fabulous!
