In the Keweenaw summer time when you need to cool off, many folks head out to McLain State Park. It's always a safe bet that it will be at least a few degrees cooler than in town. But of course this isn't summer and I'm not sure folks are looking to get any cooler than we are at the moment, so these photos from Keith Meyers will take us out there in the midst of the winter winds and cold, without us catching a chill.

How about that first photo? I'm sure we'd have a dilly of a time trying to get that grill started with the winds that look to be howling. Even the pine needles on the right side of the photo seem to be leaning out towards to Big Lake.

Then in Keith's second shot, the snow is suspended in the air by the winds and the water sure looks to be quite stirred up. My favorite though, is that blue hue in the ice as it gets closer to the water's edge. I don't know about you, but I need to go put a sweater on now, I'm chilled!

My son was out grilling bratwurst on Monday night in temps in the single digits. He's so weird!!!!!

Sounds like perfect tailgating weather to me!!!

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 - 07:56 am:

Just chill'n!

DebS, maybe he didn't want to get a frying pan dirty. Seriously, while I wouldn't do it for brats, grilling is the only way I cook steaks and that includes in winter.

By Dale Beitz (Dbeitz) on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 - 08:21 am:

The farm I was raised on in the thumb area has a large toolshed right next to the house, and my Dad regularly grills steaks in the toolshed during the cooler months of the year.

I've gone outside in a blizzard to grill London Broil. There's just no other way to cook it!

Good morning! Ah, my favorite park! When I was living there, this was one of my favorite places to take my children-all year round. Cross country skiing there was great! We would have a winter picnic in our favorite spot! Keith, thanks for sharing and for being my eyes to one of my favorite places! Have a wonderful day-even tho it is so cold!

Jimn....Mmmmm, steaks on the grill. What time are we eating tonight? Clio's not that far from Lansing, in the cosmic scheme. I can bring a cheesecake for dessert.

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 - 10:03 am:

I will bring the beer and we can keep it cold in the snow.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 - 10:56 am:

My grill is put away, but I would love to use it. That blue in the ice is so pretty.

By Steve Haagen (Radsrh) on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 - 11:37 am:

We grill all winter long!! There is no other way to cook meat then over an open flame.

By Tom (Tom) on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 - 11:55 am:

Is that first picture really McLain's Park? If that is an island out there I wonder when that arrived? It looks like Shira's Park in Marquette.

By Eddyfitz (Eddyfitz) on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 - 12:26 pm:

looks like time for Cold Cuts at park today!!!!

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 - 12:35 pm:

I'll bring the Alaskan King Crab, what time is dinner?

By Dale Beitz (Dbeitz) on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 - 12:53 pm:

Tom: I think the "island" you're seeing is just ice.

If you ever need an ego check, go the shores of Lake Superior in the winter, and stare out at it. If that doesn't make you feel small and vulnerable, nothing will. I love the lake in Winter. The third photo captures it best for me.

By Richard A. Fields (Cherokeeyooper) on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 - 01:41 pm:

Whoops, make that the second photo!

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 - 02:21 pm:

Hello, Clio! I'm in Genesee and in Clio lots! We eat at Twin's at least once a week. Our church is a Clio address (Thetford).

Beautiful outdoor scenes; I do more outdoor grilling in the winter than in summer. Don't have to deal with the flies. The grill is just outside the back door which is right off of the kitchen so it works out well.

I love to see pics of Superior in Winter. The emerald green color of the water is my favorite.

I've just purchased a Campbell Soup authentic Green Bean Casserole Dish so I can bring the green bean dish and a nice bottle of Chianti. Alas, I am in Florida and the dinner will be over by the time I can drive to Clio. :(

Scenic pics and cold looking (brrrrrr!).

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 - 06:18 pm:

My family in National Mine was out grilling brats on Monday night
too. And I must say, one of my favorite comfort food meals is
grilled Johnsonville brats with hot mustard and Bush beans ... and
maybe a few veggies on the side.

By Therese (Therese) on Thursday, January 15, 2009 - 06:29 am:

I once grilled a 28 pound turkey using a whole bag of bricquets and singed my arms trying to remove it from the pyre. I was dumb. The turkey was done in 1 1/2 hours. Tender, moist and smokey.

The Keweenaw Peninsula is beautiful in any kind of weather and any time of year!!!

By Linda St. Aubin (Upswede) on Saturday, January 17, 2009 - 08:38 am:

Many nights when I get home from work, walking from garage to the house, I can smell "grilling" somewhere. (I feel like that dog on TV looking for the bacon!) But it's usually my husband (he's retired) grilling burgers, steaks, hot dogs (his favorite), brats whatever all the time. There is nothing like that smell in the air (well, maybe the smell of toast!) Great pictures. I'm so glad this freeze is breaking this weekend.
