Who'd have ever thought that the various types of white we experience here in the U.P. could be so different, yet each one so beautiful in its own way. Lately we've amassed piles of white fluffy snow, but Donna MacIntosh snapped some shots of a frosty morning, with a beauty all its own. Not only is the ground covered in white and the water frozen solid, but the trees have been touched by a frosty wand, making them appear like they're covered in ice. It amazes me that with just a few basic colors, the blue of the sky and the white of the snow and frost, the result ends up being quite beauteous.

Gorgeous!

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - 05:42 am:

So often the daily picture captures the precise current conditions here in the U.P., and today's is a good example. With no wind and warmer temps overnight, a light fog is becoming a frosty coating this morning in Eagle River.

Buddy
I realize some daily visitors skip the What'sUP page - especially dial-in users waiting for the "Decade in Review" to load. Let me repeat our note about the loss of my morning companion last evening. Our dog Buddy was a Golden Retriever/Black Lab mix, who first performed his 'happy dance' here on the Pasty Cam back in 2004. He was adopted into our family by way of the Copper Country Humane Society, where he had been recovering from Parvo virus after being picked up wandering in Trap Rock Valley.

Late yesterday Buddy was doing his customary greeting, barking at visitors who come to our door. Perhaps his ailment as a puppy had weakened his heart, because he suddenly collapsed to the floor and breathed his last, unresponsive when we tried to revive him. He had seemed to be so healthy. You may have noticed buddy on Saturday's Pasty Cam, helping Edie clear the driveway:
snowy
We're going to miss our furry companion. Often in the early morning I'd sit down at the computer with Buddy by my side and tell him, "The people aren't up yet - it's just you and me and the Lord." He would tilt his head with a puzzled look, trying to understand.

We have come to know so many friends over the years through these daily visits. And the blessings have been too many to count, among them, our pets. We may feel sadness to let them go, but gratitude and thankfulness for the time we've had together.

Charlie and Edie,
So sorry to hear about Buddy. You no doubt have lost a dear friend, companion and family member.
May the memories of him help you through your loss.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - 06:44 am:

Edie & Charlie, you have my sincere sympathy for your buddy, "Buddy's" passing. A dog has a short time to be with us in life, but in that short time they give you their 200%, and ask for so little in return. I have never once been told by any of our dogs, past and present, that I was having a bad hair day or that my butt looked big in any pair of jeans. Buddy will live on in your hearts through the wonderful memories he created being in your family!

By Greg Burk (Gregburk) on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - 06:51 am:

Charlie & Edie,

I am sorry to hear about the loss of your family member, Buddy Hopper.

There is a special place in heaven for dogs like Buddy, . . . that bring such happiness to good folks like you. There is also a special place there for folks like Edie and you, who take in such wonderful animals from the humane society kennels.

I am sure that you will miss him, and the good times that you had together, and we are thinking of you in this sad time . . .

By Kenty (Dashamo) on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - 07:02 am:

So sorry to hear about Buddy. I lost my Barney, a chocolate lab, two years ago this month and still think of him every day. He gave me 15 1/2 years of love and happiness. I'm getting watery eyes as I write this just thinking about him.

By Donna (Donna) on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - 07:10 am:

Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Edie & Charlie, My thoughts and prayers are with you!! Losing a special friend like Buddy is very difficult. We are all here for you!!

Happy Birthday to Oedith Harris!!

We are getting more snow here in Mid-Michigan. Oh YEAH!! :)

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - 07:57 am:

Sorry to hear about Buddy, Charlie. Now it will be just you and the Lord on those early mornings.

By Joy Brewer (Joy) on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - 08:46 am:

Thank you for the beautiful frosty winter morning photos. Ah, we have the same type of winter scenes here below the bridge this morning. The only thing we do not have that beautiful body of water-Lake Superior!! Again, thank you for giving me a little bit of home every morning!

Charlie, I too can relate what is like to loose a very special family member (a family pet). They give us so much and ask for so little. We are truly blessed when we have them in our lives.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - 08:57 am:

Charlie and Edie, I join the others in expressing sincere sympathy for you both, in the loss of your dear "Buddy"! Tears have risen in my eyes and my heart truly aches for you. The pain is very deep when we lose our little "friends". May God comfort you both.

By Carolyn Spoehr (Canyongal) on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - 09:25 am:

I am sorry to hear about the passing of Buddy. I know what it is like to loose a pet. We lost our dog Jules in November after having her for almost eight years. It is hard to get over.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - 09:35 am:

Charlie and Edie, oh, my, what a sad day for you. But the good part is that it doesn't sound like Buddy suffered one little bit from the moment he came to you until the moment he joyfully greeted his last friend.

Heaven: Where all the dogs you have loved will be waiting at the gate.

My heart goes out to you.

By Lisa R. (Sisugirl) on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - 09:41 am:

I join with others in this forum in expressing my condolences to you, Edie and Charlie, on losing Buddy. What a shock that must have been for you, losing him that way. Our animal companions are so important in our lives -- family, really. It's doubly difficult that they're with us for such a short time. I certainly wish that all of mine could be with me my whole life.

By Lisa R. (Sisugirl) on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - 09:42 am:

Incredible pictures today. Truly ethereal and magical.

By dotti caldwell (Dotti) on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - 09:50 am:

Beautiful pics today!

Charlie and Edie:
Sorry for your family's loss of a very special friend, Buddy.

By Nancy DeGuire (Nancyd) on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - 10:41 am:

I am so sorry about Buddy. We lost our dog, Angel, on New Years Day after a battle with pancreatitis, kidney failure and a stomach mass, among other things. It hurts. But remembering all of the unconditional love, humor and joy she brought us, helps. Buddy was a lucky dog to have you. Thank you for bringing back "This Day in History. I really missed it.

By robert (Robze) on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - 11:37 am:

Eh Charlie,
Thank you for giving life to Buddy by rescuing him from Copper Country Humane Society.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - 12:06 pm:

Edie & Charlie, sorry to hear you lost Buddy. Dogs can be the best company on those quiet mornings.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - 12:06 pm:

Sorry to hear about the loss of your "Buddy". I often think about some of the pets I've lost over the years and while they may be gone, I never forget the wonderful times I've had with all.

On a lighter note. Today must be my special day or something..... everyone keeps giving me large amounts of sweets and I'm being taken out to lunch in a little bit; almost as though it's my birthday ;-)

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - 12:15 pm:

Happy Birthday Capt. Paul! I remember from last year! Monday I had the same treatment, it was my B'day too the 5th. (Capricorns--the best!)

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - 12:48 pm:

I also join with all the others in expressing my condolences for Buddy. I am a softie when it comes to pet's from Goldfish to many others. There is just something special in a dog's unconditional love for us. I have two little loved ones. My Son up the street has one, and my daughter across the street just rescued a puppy, who I puppy sat for yesterday. That gave me 2 hours of entertainment just watching the three of them play. Just came in from the chicken coop, even my chicken's are spoiled. They let me pick um up and pet them while hand feeding them bread, and show me love. The World is a better place with pet's.

I would love to see it here in TN. like in the pictures today. The wind is realy whipping here making the 40's feel like 30's. But somebodys Mother lives here and would not like it, and she'd come give me a whipping.

P.S. I thought about your birthday when the New Year came in Russ, then it slipped my mind. Getting old I guess. Better not buy any green banana's. Capt. Paul still young enough to do that.Happy birthday's Gentlemen!

By Richard A. Fields (Cherokeeyooper) on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - 12:48 pm:

The reason I love Winter best is the incredible, delicate beauty you do not see other times of the year. The frost on trees, or the steam rising from the bays of Lake Michigan or Lake Superior in the early morning befor the ice takes over are invigorating to my soul. The pictures above make me so homesick. Thanks.

Sorry about Buddy. There is a special connection between you and a good pet. I have almost always had a pet since I was a child, and although the pain of losing one is so very great, the joy of owning one more than makes up for it. Here's to the joy Buddy gave in his life.

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - 01:31 pm:

So very sorry to hear about Buddy. I know you cherish all the wonderful moments you had with him. The loss of a dog leaves a big hole in your life, and you just have to keep remembering all those wonderful times with him.

By George J. Plautz Jr. (Slovenechild) on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - 02:09 pm:

So sorry to hear about Buddy. A little hole in your heart that will be healed with time. You guys do so much for the UP with this day in the UP and What's UP, and everything else. I never lived there but having followed you for the last several years, I really feel that it is part of my home. I enjoy immensely this day in history.

Perhaps in time someone new will take Buddy's place by your side.

By Bruce (Bessemerbj) on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - 03:26 pm:

Sorry to hear about your loss. I have sent this before and someone falsely tried to scare people off about possible viruses. Please look at it:

http://www.indigo.org/rainbowbridge_ver2.html

It is the best animated site about the Rainbow Bridge put to music. I have forwarded it to several people over the years and never a virus. Just thanks and compliments!
We have a dog named Clyde at our HOPE shelter in Ironwood that is pretty similar to Buddy but I know it takes time to make that decision. He can be seen in the dog gallery at : www.hopeanimalshelter.org

By Cindy Barga (Hoosiergirl) on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - 03:33 pm:

A pet always gives you unconditional love. You can tell your pet anything and they listen. They always keep your secrets. Pets are people too.

By Just me (Jaby) on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - 04:33 pm:

"A dog is man's best friend "is a pretty accurate saying. Ouch! My heart goes out to you on the loss of your friend,Buddy.

By Linda Ledford (Linda) on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - 05:25 pm:

My sympathy goes out to you for the loss of your Buddy. He certainly was a lovely dog. He will always be with you in memory and spirit. I know the three dogs I have lost over the years are with me daily.

I know there's another loving, furry friend just waiting for a great "Dad" to love when your ready.

May the Lord ease your heavy heart.

By Paul H. Meier (Paul) on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - 06:54 pm:

Having and having had many dogs, cats, and horses, I understand how you must feel. But from your description of his last moments, you can take heart. He was doing something he loved and the last touch he felt and sound he heard were yours.
We humans can only hope to be so lucky.

By Warren Gilbert (Warren) on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - 07:31 pm:

Charlie and Edie, we have lost several dogs and each one was precious to us. It really touched me when you told of being with Buddy in the morning and sitting "down at the computer with Buddy by my side and tell him, "The people aren't up yet - it's just you and me and the Lord." He would tilt his head with a puzzled look, trying to understand."

My wife like to say, "They are our children with fur coats" Our condolences to you both.

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - 08:10 pm:

Charlie and Edie, sorry to hear about your loss of Buddy, like so many have stated, think of all the good times you had with him and smile. Your description really got to me, Im sitting here with tears in my eyes and Im a grown man. Hopefully one day soon you can sit at your computer with the Lord and a new friend and tell them both about Buddy! My condolences to you both. I know in my own case, our dog Rocco is my best friend, and I prefer him to most people!

On a lighter note, HAPPY BIRTHDAY CAPTAIN!

I wish I can remember the words to a song 'Oh, my buddy, my friend.' I can humm it, I just do not remember the words.

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Thursday, January 8, 2009 - 05:14 am:

Thank you so much for all of your kindness, on this page, on What'sUP, by email and some even in person. Somehow sadness is diminished when it is shared, in contrast to happiness being multiplied the same way. Our day was made easier by your thoughtful words.

It's quiet and peaceful this morning as I record another 'Day in History' and upload our 3,967th consecutive daily Pasty Cam. Thanks for all the encouragement.

Charlie and Edie

By Snowman (Snowman) on Thursday, January 8, 2009 - 06:12 pm:

An Ode To Buddy;

You made us smile when we were so sad.
You were the best dog that we ever had.
We miss your big happy-go-lucky smile,
It's going to take us a big long while,
To get over the loss of a very good friend,
We'll love you Buddy until the very end.

May Buddy be in peace at the Rainbow Bridge.

Beautiful Winter pics. Charlie and Edie: so sorry about your
loss. Kathy and I love boxers, and we've gone through losing
them. Our pets are part of our families, and it's like losing a son
or daughter. May God comfort you.
