Anyone have any info on Edward Dimmer and family?
He was married to Louise Gauthier and they had one adopted child, Anna Mae. He was born in Eagle Harbor, late 1800's. They lived in Laurium and ran Dimmer's Market on Pine St. in Calumet. They were my Grandfather and Grandmother, Anna Mae was my mother.

Please email: pat@fvtd.com

Thanks
Pat

By Becky in Orlando on Thursday, January 20, 2005 - 11:36 am:

Hi! I was wondering if anyone had information on any Helminen's living in the Keweenaw area. My paternal grandfather, Clifford Helminen (born in California), had a couple of 1/2 siblings that may have been given up for adoption at some point in the area. I know that his mother lived in Calumet/ Laurium at some point. I believe that she met my grandfather's dad somewhere out west and then they moved to the Calumet/ Laurium area - she later moved to Minnesota. Unfortunately, my grandfather passed away a number of years ago and I was unable to ask him more about relatives in the Keweenaw. Oh, I believe his mother was born in Oulu, Finland and his father was from Helsinki.

Thanks so much for any info.

Hi
I would like to have a photo of Fraki's Markets. Or Quality Food Market (Thats before it was ever Fraki's.) Fraki's had stores in Calumet L'Anse, Laurium. There seem to be no photos left in the famiy and I would like to find one of the store. The old store would be really nice. Anyone have any old photos of Fraki's anyone have any history books on these towns that might have added a photo
Thanks for any help

Hi Robin...I worked at the Quality Mkt in Lake Linden during High School....the owner of the stores at that time ('50s) was T.J.Lepisto..(he was a super nice gentleman)...Ben Fraki worked for him at that time as well.... Maybe the Daily Mining Gazette or the Houghton County Historical Society (Lak Linden) would have some pictures.

By stillsearching on Sunday, March 20, 2005 - 11:14 am:

Just wondering, I'm not sure if this is the right place to look for answers but . . . is there anyone else out there in Pasty Land who is only able to trace their family "roots" back to a place in Wakefield, Michigan known as the Divine Infant Hospital?

My wife was "born"(adopted)there in August of 1961. She has recently discovered that she was given the name "Marcia", when she was born, apparently by her birth mother, but her adopted parents changed her name.

Sadly, and more than frustrating for her, and the rest of our family, there are state and federal laws that effectively prohibit her from finding and contactng any surviving relatives of her birth family.

Even though she has been able to purchase some relative information pertaining to the first names of her birth mother and father(Marilyn and William), and their relative physical features, and number of siblings at the time of her birth, and some minor birth family history, (from the State of Michigan agencies that now hold her adoption records) she herself is not legally allowed to review her adoption records.

Unless someone from her birth family has happened to contact the Michigan adoption agency to request that their names be placed in a registry for people who are searching for birth family members.

This, of course, is not very likely to happen, since it is very doubtful that any surviving birth family relatives, besides her birth mom and dad, are even aware that she was born.

Can anyone out there help us with our search for the rest of our family??

Thanks Much for your time, any thoughts, and your helpful prayers.

Doug, Did you find any info about your Charles Uksila?
I have a little about the hockey player, Charles Uksila, on my webpage under local legends:

I think the Charles Jr mentioned on the Pasty E-Mail would have been this hockey player, his dad of the same name would have been a little old to still be playing hockey in 1910.

Does anyone know of the Abfalter Family that may still resided in the Calumet area ?

My Dad tells me that his first Boss at Detroit Edison was Ed Abfalter (several decades ago, down in Detroit, MI), and that Ed Abfalter was from Calumet.

Recently my Dad asked me if I knew anyone with the last name of Abfalter - so I am just curious (for Dad). My Dad is currently 83 y.o.

I believe that Ed would have been and Electrical Engineer with D.E., at the time (like my Dad).

Hello Greg,
The only Abfalter names in the UP were from Marquette. I could not find any in the census
in Houghton county. In 1930 is one Edward Abfalter age23 in Detroit living with Harvey and Mary Herron and listed as brother in law born Michiga. He worked in a substaion electrical plant. In 1920 the family lived in Kalamazoo and by 1930 his family was in Marquette.

Hi! Does anyone know how I could find documentation of my great grandfather's 5 years he supposedly spent in Calumet, MI from 1868 to 1873. He was an immigrant from Simo, Finland by the name of Antti Jaako Kantola and later his name was changed to Andrew Jacob Kandoll. He moved to Deep River in Washington state in 1873. I heard he was one of the founding members of the Pine Street Apostolic Lutheran Church in Calumet and that he worked in a mine and as a logger. I would appreciate any suggestions for further research.

Has anyone any pictures of Rev. Herman Matero, a Lutheran
minister stationed in Negaunee for a time, and then in
Ironwood? Any pics of his family from way back?

Also looking for any photos of Herman, MI, and the Leppanen
family headed by my great grandfather Timo, and grandfather
Nestor. They lived in Skanee for a while.

Some of my great great grand fathers siblings emigrated from Pyhajarvi, Finland to America in the end/beginning 1800/1900. I think that at least one of them ended up in Michigan. My g.g. grand fathers name was Isak Haapapuro (born 1863)and his siblings that emigrated were: Henrik (born 1859), Susanna (b 1872, emigrated 1903) and Vilhelm (b 1876) Haapapuro.

I have discovered that there´s a Haapapuro Rd in Houghton, Michigan and it makes me wonder if it´s named after one of my ancestors...

It would be great if any one nows anything about the Haapapuro´s in Michigan.
Thanks Pirjo

I will be making a trip to the Keweenaw in about 3 weeks. I have been researching (and have found what I -think- is all the free/no charge online information on my relatives. Time period I am interested in is from approximately 1850 - 1910. Surnames researching: Elias, Wappler/Wabler/Warbler, Bammert, Schnettler. Some of my relatives are buried in Pine Grove up in Eagle Harbor however I am having difficulty finding birth/death information on some of them. I have checked mining records to find my GG-Grandfather and my grandmother's brother - both died in the mines - but to no avail. I also have not found burial places for them, either. Throughout the time these families lived up there, they all lived north of the lift bridge. I have located information in the 1870 and 1880 censuses as well as anything I could figure out from the LDS site as well. I've checked the state GENDIX death file and it has little information. Regarding early deaths in Keweenaw County - would the courthouse at Eagle River have some of this? My stay up there will be short and I will probably have only 1 weekday to do any research (I am guessing most places are closed weekends) so I know I will have to narrow my scope. I am looking forward to visiting Bammert's Blacksmith Shop as from what I can determine, he was married to my Great-grandfather's only sister. Anyone who knows anything - feel free to contribute what you can - I use all information for, if nothing else, a place to start looking. Thanks so much to all you great folks. I'm proud to be a descendent of Keweenaw pioneers.

Vanessa,
My g.Aunt Anna Koski married Joseph Bammert. He died and she remarried John Waara. She had children from both husbands. One daughter lives in Eagle River and is a cousin to my father. Anna is recorded in Finland church records as "Pommert".
Keweenaw county court house will be a source of information.

vanessa. do you happen to know anybody by the name of rousu in minnesota. my great grandmother was a rousu who had family in minnesota.

By Vanessa - Minnesota on Wednesday, July 6, 2005 - 05:25 pm:

No, the name is not familiar although there is a town on the Canadian border of Roseau (they pronounce it ROSE-oh). There were a lot of French here due to the trapping trade and abundant river access. If there is something you want me to try and find, go ahead and shoot me an e-mail and I can check into some databases here. Anything is helpful; names, places, dates, etc. You probably already know the drill. I will use that spelling and see what I can come up with for you.

Does anyone have information on the Johnson family of Chassell. My grandmother Effie Johnson married Lloyd Meyers. They lived in Hurontown. I was wondering about my grandmother's family as little was said about them growing up. Thanks.

My grandmother taught school in Sidnaw in 1921-23; her name was Ida Rowe. My mother (who was 5-6 at the time) remembers the principal was a man, a WWI vet who had suffered nerve gas damage. Does anyone remember hearing of this? My grandmother Ida also taught at an elementary school in Calumet (under her maiden name, Ida Simons) from 1910 to 1914, and seventh grade at Amasa from 1914-16. As a teenager she had a good friend named Netty Jenks in Calumet (Osceola Township?). I think Netty later lived in L'Anse. I'd love to know if anyone has any memories or connections to these names.

I would like to have some old photos of the Redridge Band, as my grandfather played cornet in the band(approx.1908-1915).I've contacted the MTU Archives and was informed that Bill Brinkman more than likely had pics in his collection. Mr. Brinkman was a teacher and photographer. His mentor was a Mr. Saltzer(?), another great photographer. My grandpa was William Michael Holman, but was born in Oulu, Finland with the name of Kujanpaa. I am working on my family tree and sure hope to include early photos of my family.
Thank you!

Commenting on Robin's and another person's message back in June regarding the Fraki family on Oak Street, my great aunt was Sylvia Eskola, so I was interested to read the message. She and her sister Irene (who would have been the baker of the cookies!) lived at 726 Oak St (Lincoln Dr). Sylvia was a teacher, counselor, and the principal of Hancock High School. She was a tremendous lady. She retired maybe in the early 1970s and passed away in 1976. Another sister, Estella Eskola Lahti, then came to live at the house with Irene, who passed away in 1989 (I think). Estella passed away in 2004 at the age of 105.

Bill was Sue's father-he passed away-her mother might be in that same house, next door to Doc Gilbert's {when he lived in Laurium}. I think Sue might be living in Minnesota.

Does anyone have knowledge of an Eva Maria Maaherra who emigrated to the UP with her family abt. 1875 or earlier from Norway? Her father was Henrik or Heikki Maaherra. Her dob was abt. 1857? She disappeared before her family emigrated to Pendleton, OR in 1877. Possibly she did not want to go west. Her sister Briita married Carl (Pelli) Pell in the UP in 1872 and Catherina (Katri) married Antti Jacobson Rauhala from Ylivieska, Finland, Nov. 8, 1873 in Calumet. Does anyone know if Rauhalas in the UP are related to Antti and who Rauhala Road and the Rauhala area are named for? Some Rauhalas went from Pendleton to Claresholm, Alberta to farm. Also, information about Fredericka (Pelli) Frederickson & Isaac Frederickson and Amanda Caroline (Pelli) Kyllonen & Eskel or Esko Kyllonen would be appreciated & will help with family research. Thank you.

Hello Everyone,

I am seeking information on my father, Stephen Barich, and his parents, Servasi (John) Barich and Mary Lakner. All lived in Calumet in the early 1900's with an address of 3005 Swamp Road.

My father was born in Calumet in 1917, served in WWII, then settled in Detroit as a sheet metal worker. His parents are listed as being from Austria, with his father dying in a Calumet mining accident, and his mother dying in Calumet in the 1960's.

My father was best friends with a Peter Sunich, who I believe is listed in the 2-3-2005 email from Alicia, MI. Peter is also shown as my Godfather on my Detroit baptismal certificate.

Thank you so much to anyone who has any information!
