It is ashame that IF the fire is arson, that the people have NO RESPECT for private property and/or history. You want to take pictures when you take a tour and there is grafiti on the buildings. Need to let a couple of viscious, mean junkyard dogs run loose on the grounds at night. Let the dogs put a fire up there butts.

There was even grafitti on the bandshell in Laurium after the concerts started.

The kids nowadays do not have any respect, for themselves, other people and property. Now the police and goverment tell these kids if your parent or parents hit you call 911. When I was growing up it was called discipline. We were never beaten til black and blue but, we were still disciplined at times. Then the kids that are really abused, fall through the cracks.

I seem to remember Calumet and Lake Linden having a curfew????

With all those cameras they have in and around Houghton, nothing was ever picked up???

I still say get a couple of mean, junkyard dogs and let them patrol the grounds at night. There were companies that did things like that. It just ticks me off about kids nowadays.

Of course with dogs everybody will say 'liabilities' and I say who gives a crap, PUT SIGNS UP ABOUT THE DOGS.

Junkyard dogs are not a threat when kids often carry knives and guns on them these days. Don't make these dogs out to be the criminals.

Lets just keep the kids crminals? These dogs are not criminals, they are trianed to protect and probably are good pets, too. So lets just keep the kids as criminals.

Having raised Doberman Pinschers your junkyard dog comment about being mean was taken serious and insulting by me. You would be amazed if you knew these"junkyard" dogs are actually naturally protective without having to be made/beaten to be mean. I interperted your junkyard dog comment as these dogs are ill tempered making them sound out as bad as criminals. Dobermans, Rotties, German Shepard, Boxers, the entire working breed group, type breeds are sorely misunderstood. A protective dog doesn't mean it is a vicious dog and they are not meant to be owned by just anyone.

Though not in any way a 'dog person' myself, I certainly can confirm what you say about dobies.

Some friends, of 40+ years now, had a pair of dobies some years ago. Visiting them certainly was interesting. Once introduced to the dobies as a friend, the biggest risk was either having my legs beaten to a pulp by an enthusiastically wagging doberman tail, or having one's head in my lap! (The latter was nowhere near as much of an ordeal as with Rufus, their St. Bernard, ol' "slobber lips," some years before! Yuck! <grin>)

There was an incident with a door-to-door salesman, though. He was quite the persistent fellow, and when Sharon tried to very firmly decline his offer to step in and demonstrate his Electrolux, he made the mistake of trying to block the slightly open screen door by wedging his foot in the door. Ohhh, BIG mistake. I think the poor soul is still running, after scattering his wares on the front lawn as he fled from the slightly more emphatic doberman.

Very protective of family, in particular, and extremely intelligent! And you just couldn't find a dog with a sweeter disposition … unless you happened to be an excessively pushy salesman attempting to enter the house uninvited!

FRNash..you were very fortunate to meet Dobies! Our last Dobie, Lucky. tough dog name huh? lol,was full of amazing antics. He fell asleep in my lap one morning, all 115 lbs. curled up in a ball, I called in sick that morning to work, and napped right along with him. Another task of his protectiveness, was one day he stood guard at the basement doors, growling, not allowing our daughter to enter back into the house. He was so persistant she wasn't going in those doors, so around the front door they came in, only to have found a 5 ft. long corn snake behind the air cond, unit next to the basement door. He later took care of that snake for us.

I need to say something here. First of all I made NO particular reference to any particular breed of dog, when I made the comment of mean-junkyard dog. it was just a term I used.

When my brothers and I were kids we were given a dog that we later found out was police trained to attack and you talk about the sweetest dog, BUT, very protective of us. One night my mom and us were home in the evening and there was a noise on the side of the house and Rusty stood guard by the window til it was checked out and then he left, turns out the gutter came loose from the house. HE also loved to sleep with his head on our lap on the couch and things like that, but do not try and do something to one of us kids because he would get between what was going on and just stand there til he felt we were O.K.

I made NO reference to a certain breed.

The dog breeds that I mentioned and have owned are stereotyped as your mean, vicious "junkyard" dogs that put fire up their butts as you put it. It's a bad rap for these wonderful and faithful friends, guide, therapy, search and rescue dogs.

There are a lot of dogs that are sterotyped if you will, I just did not mention any certain breed. The priest of a church I use to go to as a teenager had two (2) HUGE St. Bernards and the first thing he told us was not to approach the dogs when he was out walking them around the grounds and we respected that and the fact that he informed us.

Then as kids we had a neighbor that had Irish Wolf Hound dogs and our parents and other parents had to call the police because the dogs kept getting out and chasing us kids.

Enough said. Once again what about people disrespecting other peoples property which is what I first stated posting.

What do you say to people who do have dobermans that are trained to patrol and protect property from intrudres, NOT to be junkyard dogs, but still go after intruders when they enter thier territory and/or area?

Those Dobermans have jobs unlike people who seek to destroy or carry out arson. They are properly and correctly trained with measures without abuse and torture unlike today's pitbulls used for fighting for sick and criminally minded people's enjoyment..I don't know what goes through people's mind when they conduct arson, destruction whatever. I'm concerned about innocent animals that fall into the hands of these people or mis-labeled. There are no bad dogs, just bad people. Now I have a life to get on with, thanks for your time, hope you find the answers you're looking for.

I was not looking for any answers, just comments as to how people and/or kids of nowadays seem to have no respect for other peoples property. That was it!!

Your high horse, no breed mentioned, is dogs against bad people and mine is direspectful kids and/or people of nowadays. The same people who ARE the ones who train dogs in a bad way AND gratitti buildings AND just have no respect for something that is not theirs.

I had a brother in Ohio who had a doberman------that dog just would not make friends.
My brother would hang onto his collar until he settled down. Then he was put into his big cage because he was so aggressive. I know that dog was not trained to attack, etc., as it was obtained when it was a puppy.
We had a neighbor who had a rottie----------that dog had the freedom of the back yard that was fenced in. That dog barked whenever you walked by the house. He dug a space under the fence and came after people walking and bit several. The owners were always gone during the day at work and the kids at school. Dog got more and more aggressive---------the next door neighbor became worried about his own children and called the sheriff. the owners were warned numerous times to keep the dog confined. The sheriff said if the dog gets loose and comes on your property you can shoot it. Yep, he was shot on the neighbors property.
So, what goes on with those dogs?

Same thing as a lot of today's youth problems...bad up-bringing, abuse, neglect.

Doesen't sound like any of the dogs Tom discribed were abused or neglected. Admit it, some dogs are just aggressive by nature.......

A cousin had a black scottie terrier and she had to get rid of it because it kept biting us and other people and I KNOW for a fact that dog was not abused or neglected in any way-shape or form. When she got the dog it was a puppy and it killed her to have to give it up but, she was a responsible person and felt she did the right thing.

Oh very true some breeds are bred to have the ability to be aggressive. Like I stated in an earlier post these dogs are not meant for everybody. Sad the rescue societies and humane societies are filled with labs, golden retrievers waiting to be adopted out, these breeds that are know famously for being the perfect family dog. Then on the human nature, there are more and more priests being accused and convicted for molestation of children. Sorry to say, but we must accept we don't live in a perfect world for man nor beast.

ONCE AGAIN, MY ORIGINAL POSTING STARTED OUT TO BE ABOUT THE KIDS OF NOWADAYS AND BEING DISRESPECTFUL OF OTHER PEOPLES PROPERTY. I DID NOT MENTION ANYTHING ABOUT CERTAIN BREEDS OF DOGS. Reading the foregoing comments reminds me that some people appear to be "junkyard people" in the way they live and have certain breeds of dogs as pets. They often live in unkept homes with junk cars and very large guard dogs in slum areas of some cities.

I just came across this today and would like to add a comment about "grafitti". Several years ago I saw a picture that was in John Dee's Journal. It showed a concrete bridge or something and it was covered with Graffitti----GANG graffitti. there is plenty of it in the Chattanooga area and is easily recognizable.

This has beena very nice discussion of the virtues of various dogs (Iagree with the defenders of good dogs), but I came here wondering what the investigation of the smelter fire turned up. Does anyone know what was found?
