What'sUP?

By RD, Iowa on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 05:57 am:

Good Morning! What with the new format, will you still be recognizing the Early Bird??
First Post
You earned it, RD.

By Rose on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 06:10 am:

I love this photo. I "borrowed" it quite a while ago for my wallpaper. Thank you for sharing it.

By John J, IL on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 06:52 am:

Looks like you have a lively exchange underway in the VOTE conversation above. Is it the management's intention to allow for more controversial discussions here in "What'sUP" ?

As long as everybody is nice :o)

By JIM NICHOLAS, CLIO, MI. on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 07:29 am:

DON'T LIKE THE NEW FORMAT. TOO MUCH MESSING AROUND TO GET TO WHAT YOU WANT TO SEE. I HAVE BEEN ON HERE SINCE THE BEGINNING, IT WAS BETTER EARLIER.

By Gary, Colorado on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 07:37 am:

Good Morning from the 8200 foot level of the Colorado Rockies. Leaves here are long gone. Woke up this morning to 16" of you-know-what! Don't laugh, you're next!

By DB on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 07:45 am:

thanks for disscusion area.NOVEMBER 1 HAS ALWAYS MEANT --WINTER TO ME. USUALLY LIKE TURNING A KEY IN THE DOOR.

By Little Betsy Fan on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 07:55 am:

Okay Betsy Gang- Continue now that we have this new page. Uncle Chuck, Marty, and Uncle Ben- I'll send the 96 rolls of toilet paper and the ammo if you continue to entertain us Little Betsy fans!

By Alan, Kansas City, MO on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 08:50 am:

I want to vote "Yes" for the new format. You only need to come to this link if you want to see the "offline", "off subject" conversation.

By Rose on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 09:07 am:

It's nice that there is no actual subject on this page. Folks are free to let the conversation flow naturally. Like it does in face to face conversations. Much more relaxed. I think it will be fun.

By Yooper on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 09:44 am:

Good Morning

By wheres lil' betsy? on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 09:46 am:

By danbury on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 11:02 am:

By yahoo in flatland on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 12:07 pm:

Are Calvin & Hobbe still published?

By Marty.Litlley Betsy on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 12:07 pm:

By JAD, Oskar, MI on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 12:43 pm:

November 1 and my lawn needs mowing! My mower has been "winterized" and I'm reluctant to pull it out. Does anyone in the Keweenaw recall mowing their yard this late?

By pungvait mi on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 01:09 pm:

dis is da only place in da world where u need a lawn mower with skis.

By ls on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 01:23 pm:

Calvin and Hobbes is no longer published. Bill Watterson stopped it on December 31, 1995. If you go to www.ucomics.com/calvinandhobbes you can see the oldies.

By just kidding on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 01:49 pm:

Can we mention the gerbil on whats up?

By The Inside@Little Betsy on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 02:18 pm:

Where's lil betsy, Marty's cleanin his gun, not his apartment, Nephew Ben,(not uncle ben, he did'nt like our comments) think's his 300 Mag is gonna take a bear or deer, but he just turned 25,on Halloween, he'll probably just shoot his own foot off! We need to get him married off and makin lil yoopers, actually he's a CRNA, and would make a good catch for some yooper gal, eh! Grampa Norm needs a trip to BK, Dougie needs, kitchen help, Uncle Mike needs to see Heidi at the bank in Calumet, Uncle Chuck just needs to sell more medical equipment, Tem and Queets, need to get Betsy, the coffee gettin cold. Adam and Scott need to get up there by Nov. 15th, Uncle Charlie, well, Dow can run a couple of days without you. No women allowed, at deer camp!

PS, Marty, ya know your truck won't float, and Grampa Norm's to old to swim.
Hi Maija!

Stay tune, more to follow, comments welcome

By Rachel, wishing she was at Little Betsy on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 02:27 pm:

If we win the lottery tomorrow, Adam will be up, but he's bringing Dorothy with him. What good does it do me to send him up and have to do parenting duty all by myself? She can't do dishes, but she's real good at laundry.

By Grammpa Doug, the cook on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 02:31 pm:

Hey Benny, put the big mudders on before comin U.P. I'm worried about poor Marty. I also think we're gonna need another tow strap @ Keystone.

By dm, texas on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 02:35 pm:

Congrats to the Football Huskies! Another huge win over the weekend. 9-0. GLIAC Champions! 1st time ever.

This Saturday! is the bash at the big house. Come out and enjoy the alumni tent, football game, Michigan youth expo, volleyball, and Men's MTU basketball game.

All in Ann Arbor, MI this weekend.

See you there !!!!

By joesyopper on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 02:53 pm:

Little Betsy group,
You now have your own page, and it pleases me to no end. But, you are still talking in your own code. I would like to understand your humor. Deer camp is one of my favorite subjects. Please try to talk to a bigger audience. Do you think Jay Leno would be funny if he was standing in front of an audience of 20,000 and only five people understood what he was saying.

By NMU Football on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 02:54 pm:

Congrats to the Huskies!

By LB on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 03:01 pm:

joesyopper, we'll try, no code, just enjoy this time of year, help us out with your own tales.

By Sue, Calumet on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 03:12 pm:

Danbury, I tried to explain to my English friends that "Hobbes Rules". I think the humor is too subtle for them.

By JustRanting on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 03:13 pm:

I welcome the new structure and will probably vist the 'WhatsUP' section more regularly than the 'normal' page. Seems not everyone is happy.

Someone on the regular discussion board played the 'Big Brother' card this afternoon. What a lot of us seem to forget is that the Pasty.net folks OWN this site. They can do what they want (delete every other post, ban postings from Texas, whatever) and if that's what they want, that's fine. Unless you are paying for the right to post and they have not met their end of the agreement, there is no issue. There's lots of room on the internet playground, if you're not happy, take your toys to your own site and have at it.

By Ronald Oregon on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 03:53 pm:

I like this new feature. I seldom post anything but I do look here
almost every day.

I think a lot of former U.P. people look here regularly but don't
necessarily post a, lot.

By joesyopper on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 03:55 pm:

Little Betsy group,
This may not be funney, but it is absolutly true.
ARVO'S CAMP:
The first camp that Arvo built was on State land by Moonshine Hill creek near Wakefield. He always said if you build on government land you pay very low property taxes. It was an one room log cabin with a dirt floor, three miles from the nearest road. It was a long hike to carry in food and beer, so we never went on real pukers(Finn for a good drunk).
If you are interested, I can tell you more.

By nephew Ben on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 03:57 pm:

Grandpa doug (i have an extra tow strap that came with my jeep) so dont be worried about marty getting stuck in the woods. as far as the bigger tires, i think my jeep can get through anything that the UP can throw at me as long as i dont spin out on the logging roads like i have done in the past. my 300 mag is sited in to blow a flea off a dogs back at 500 yds. all we need now is to see some tracks that arent 5 days old? any snow up there yet? hey rachel has dorothy taken hunters safety yet? i know she has a shotgun...

By Jeff in Houston on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 04:11 pm:

Shelly, I was beginning to worry about you. Didn't see a word from you since our poor Astros lost the race. Thought maybe you were sick or got fired or something. Hope it was just a nice visit to the UP or somewhere else a little cooler. I'm getting my coat out of the old cedar closet in anticipation of some real November weather. Not so sure I like this "side room chat" business though. I fell disjointed. Anyway glad you're still with us.

By Yosemite Sam... on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 04:35 pm:

All you super macho men with your big guns! 300 mag for whitetail deer?? Scheesh! Why not a bazooka! 500 yards through the dense trees?? yeah right! There is so much B.S around here the bears are rolling on the floor laughing and not even the skunks can stand it. It reminds me of the time I tackled and caught a deer in Texas... notched his ears with my knife and released him... That's how real men hunt deer... and yes, I have a witness...

By niece Sarah, L.B. on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 04:37 pm:

Hey Rachel- I think it's time to skip gymnastics with Dorothy one weekend and take her to hunter's safety. Cousin Ben has a good point!

By niece Sarah again, L.B. on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 04:44 pm:

joesyopper- dorothy is only 2 years old...fyi

By Marty.Little Betsy getting closer on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 04:49 pm:

A big thanks to the folks at pasty central for giving us and anvanue to express our feelings about the u.p. and a laugh or 2. we understand the need for rules and don't mind at all about following them. i just think its great that you are so accommidating to allow us to banter back and forth with this new forum. it's just another great example of what the u.p. has to offer...very fine people...thanks again

By Marty.LB on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 04:52 pm:

joeyooper no code really. half the time i dont know what chucks talking about either..

By UC, Little Betsy on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 05:15 pm:

Joesyopper, Tell us more about Arvo's camp.
Yosemite Sam, when you can get a stainless steel 300mag (Browning) with a Leuapold scope for $800w/hard case you jump on it, would'nt you agree? Grammpa Doug sold it to Ben because he does'nt hunt anymore, so it may be abit much, but oh well, 2 weeks to opening day!

By Nephew Ben - Little betsy on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 05:19 pm:

id have to agree with marty on that one, just having fun, no real code other than just family stories that have been brought up from prior hunting trips... my gun is sited in pretty good but it wont do any good when im sleeping in the woods instead of looking for deer tracks. chuck, are we going to make a run to barega this year for a little 21-teen (blackjack) or are we going to pass this year? dougie you in for a quick trip?

By UC, LB on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 05:19 pm:

Niece's Sarah & Rachel, are Scott and Adam comin U.P.?

By UC,LB on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 05:23 pm:

We're gonna take Baraga for everything they got!

By Big game hunter on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 05:41 pm:

WOW!!!! all of these big guns makes my days of hunting seem like childs play....When I was a lad I would sit in my tree stand, and when a Buck would pass underneath I would jump onto its back. My weapon was a piano wire attached to a couple of sticks....I would loop this over the Bucks neck and with a strong pull....Well I think you know the rest....Full freezer

By Ben - little betsy on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 05:45 pm:

thats funny everyother time we have said that we always end up leaving heading back to chassell wondering what we got out of the trip other than an empty gas tank and empty pockets, but if your driving i am willing to try and win my money back from last year. wonder if my dad is going to be in for a trip this year or if he'll meet us in gay for a beer like last year? what do you think?

By Irene, Bruce Crossing on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 05:49 pm:

Big game hunter, you are the HUNTER! way to go,lol When jumping from the tree stand did you ever land on the horns? Did you miss the wire when you played the piano?

By I witness on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 06:12 pm:

I remember big game hunter coming home once with a deep wound from landing on the horns....He was always in trouble with the music teacher also...

By Sassy pants on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 06:20 pm:

This new format makes me feel like a kid in gradeschool again and I've just been sent to sit in the corner cuz I was sassy. I think I like it though this time.

By Rose on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 06:37 pm:

Is it just my computer? Or are the .gif animations not working?

By Yooper on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 06:45 pm:

Julie S~ My neighbor sends the graphics to me. I will find out where he gets them.

By Yooper on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 06:46 pm:

Rose~ They aren't working for me either. I'm sure it's some kind of error that's temporary.

By Jeff, FL on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 01:05 pm:

I think Shelly's last comment was right on! In the long run, I think the WhatsUP section is going to hurt this site.

By shelly on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 01:18 pm:

I hope my comment wasn't taken negatively! I just love this site and was a little taken back that open conversation not related to the picture was not going to be here anymore, kinda feels funny not to chit chat about whatever since thats what we've been doing for months. I was stating that I am so glad we can still do that in the Whats UP site. I love how we have all gotten to know eachother through comments; and I have split my gut many a times over somethings people have said here. Generally, I think people just feel wierd about changes, but we can and will adjust. :)

By Joe Finn, Rhinelander, Wi on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 01:32 pm:

Dr. Nat,
Please see my question on "what's up"
Thanks for any info.

By Bill from Illinois on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 01:33 pm:

They are nice leaf pictures but how many times can we say that. I the odd comments and lively discussions that took place here were spice from the UP and I will miss them!

What's to miss, they're just one click away....
What's UP :->

By jocko, mn on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 02:06 pm:

"Nice leaf pictures". Yeah this place was a little lame before,
but now, forget about it, big "bother" is watching.

By confused on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 02:20 pm:

jocko, mn

what do you mean? Are you being sarcastic? You don't like the leaves?

By Mary, IL on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 05:58 pm:

Hey Dom,

What are you doing in Heidelberg, Germany, if I may be so bold?

By Lena, MN on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 06:30 pm:

Hi Jocko. I agree. There is a messageboard for volleyball nationally. It used to be very interesting and fun. A little spice is nice if it's not too hot. Then they had volunteer "big brothers" come in. Now about anything anybody talks about are stats. Boring. I see it going down the tubes like their predecessor. I love the photos and look in every day. I also like to read some comments.

By jocko, mn on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 07:23 pm:

Being a newcomer to the Keweenaw, I have enjoyed coming
to this page in hopes of findng someone discussing the
area's history or geography. By moving these topics off the
main page to the "what's up" group of subtopics you are
seriously stunting the stimuli. Oh well, it's still worth a
quck scan, but who's gonna read it all?

By flewyesterdayindawind on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 07:56 pm:

Jocko may have a point.....Only so many posts relative to leaves....All mine blew down Halloween Eve.......

By Ms. Katie on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 08:25 pm:

Ah, Jocko, did someone take a "grumpy pill" today? The whole idea as I understand is for chat about the photos, including history, geography etc. is on our beloved pasty.net. Then, anything "off" subject or could be a mite challenging could be discussed where the main stream chats doesn't vere off to the side. Does anyone else have the same feeling? So far today it looks to me to be working. Some days a little spice is good for me some days not :) Smile, Jocko.

By yahoo in flatland on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 10:55 pm:

WOW, what a day for the new format!
The "VOTE" section must be melting the circuit boards of pasty.com/net!
The masses are venting!

Great timing Charlie on the new format!

By yahoo in flatland on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 10:59 pm:

oh yea, nice to see the Betsy gang at it again.

I don't hunt, (couldn't hit the side of a barn... hmmm, maybe I should go with the Betsy gang, sounds like I would fit right in)
but have been to many friends deer camps & love the stories!

By Pat, Mich. on Tuesday, November 2, 2004 - 12:06 am:

I'm just wondering if any of the hunters, who are writing in their stories, remember the picture of the fellow bringing his deer home on his bicycle.

By Marty.LB on Tuesday, November 2, 2004 - 12:58 am:

yahoo in flatland...you'd fit right in we haven't shot a deer in a few years.. main focus is enjoying the great scenery just like on the main page...although we do like it in person ..and believe me none of us are crack shots...we enjoy the comrodery and don't mind sharing it with others...the u.p is a great place to be, can't wait..8 more days and i'll be up there.. have a good night all

By JustME on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 02:22 pm:

Between this message board and the regular picture message board? Seems identical?

To answer your question JustME,...this message board (What's UP) is for those who want to post off the subject of the picture of the day (just like you did!). The regular message board (Cam Notes) is for posting about the picture of the day and for those who don't want to read all the other things unrelated that get posted. When you think about it, it's the best of both worlds! 8-)

By Just ME on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 02:57 pm:

Thank you for filling me in. :)

Your welcome! :->

By kk, up, mi on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 05:49 pm:

Wow, I loved pasty.com for exactly what it was, great pictures, some controversy, some support and encouragement, a lot of learning, (esp from Dr. Nat). For the past month, I haven't been able to visit the cam every day and so tried to catch up on weekends. I've been so long trying to read everything on all these separate pages today, I'm stopping now. The big highlight was when you found your picture on pasty.cam or something was referenced on pasty.cam. I get many emails or phone calls telling me to check out pasty.cam. Now those conversations will be buried somewhere in What's Up. Was there a user survey taken prior to the change?

By Totally pleased with the new format. on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 07:04 pm:

Is a "user survey" necessary for a privately owned site? I don't think so..especially when the integrity of the site is involved, and its original and intended purpose has been compromised. As for buried discussions, there are some, I believe, that should be buried..or at least conducted privately. :) I'm glad they're off the main page.

By pleased on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 07:26 pm:

totally pleased, couldn't have said it better myself.

By Candy, CA on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 07:29 pm:

This new format will allow those who WISH to really get into some good discussions. If we all remember to respect each other and allow each other to have differing opinions, and play nice, this will be wonderful! Thanks to Charlie, Mary, Toivo and the crew, the UP is now not only a place to share beautiful scenery, but have real, intelligent conversations on a wide variety of topics. I love it!

By Thad on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 07:51 pm:

From what I see thus far, I will probably only check the "cam notes" page for the image of the day and maybe read a bit there. As someone noted there today, how much can people discuss about a leaf (which was todays image).

I'm not about to jump around the "what's up" board with users creating new topics at will. The main "what's up" page already is filling up with personal chit-chat. That stuff sometimes slipped in, but was not allowed to get too far out of hand on the old cam notes page. And I was one who also agreed that the little moving graphic files "cluttered up" (as one person called it) the old page and didn't belong there. Yes, I know that there was nothing against it officially, personally I just preferrred a text only type format except for user images which were relevent to that day's discusson(s).

The moderators tried to walk a fine line with keeping the old page on some sort of track without being "censors" all the time. And they did a pretty good job of it, in my opinion. It no doubt took a lot of time and I think that they thought this new format would kind of satisfy everyone (as much as you can).

I think it will make things worse. Here is what I see happening:

1. The "cam notes" page posts will drop off because there can only be so much discussion about a picture.

2. The "what's up" page will probably be busy, but it will be frequented by certain regulars who will chit chat back and forth and dominate the posts. Legitimate questions about some particular subject will be lost in the babble.

3. The ability to create "New topics" will have all sorts of pages where a post or a topic can end up, and it will be a nightmare for the moderators. For example, the posts on the Vote page appeared to be heading into becoming personally abusive, last I checked. And what will happen if someone, for whatever reason, uploads 50-100 animated gif images a day? How do you decide which of them, if any, doesn't belong. By how "cute" they are? Or how old the person posting them claims to be? No offense to anyone, but I just state this as something for the moderators to ponder.

Maybe I'll be wrong on all of this, but after just one day I can say that I am very disappointed already.

I'll give it a try for a week or so. However things will have to somehow change from the direction that they're presently going in for me to stick around, read and contribute.

Regards,

By dissappointed on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 07:58 pm:

I feel the same way about this format as the person before me. It took me an hour to read the "Whats up" It seemed to me that Dave from Colorado and Mel took up most of the banter. It to me was sickening. Won't go there again.

Bah Humbug

By Old Yooper & loving the pasty.com site on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 08:46 pm:

Hey everybody...new things take time to adjust to...let's give it some time...maybe there will be bugs to work out, maybe not.I found the Vote site today very interesting...some deep seated feelings to say the least. Didn't get my laundry done today, had dinner late because I got so absorbed. Maybe making the change at this point in our country's history was bad timing and things will calm down and be light hearted memories again. Something makes me think we'll all appreciate the old banter again soon and getting there by clicking one more time...or more if you are inquisitive....My hat off to all you guys to try and make this work for everyone and still be true to the UP. When something is sooo successful there are bound to be needed changes.
Just 2 cents from a reader from about the beginning...and a Yooper moved away...

By weighing in on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 11:01 pm:

It doesn't matter if its a privately owned site, business people should know what their customers want. No matter how "nice" everyone is at pasty, they are all profiting. They are earning salaries and growing a business, albeit an altruistic one. I think a user survey would have been nice considering all of the money pasty users spend through pasty.com. Now you can't post anything on the cam unrelated to the picture, but that also includes good morning!!? What is up with that? Where's our good old great feeling of the Copper Country. Puhleese!!!

Look at the editor comment to this poster who is on very often. How do you think he/she felt? Now if you want say good morning, you have to go to What's UP?

By NKR Mishawaka IN on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 06:18 am:
Good morning from Mishawaka IN.

Good morning to you, NKR. Your moderators encourage you to comment on the picture of the day on this page, and if it's just to say hello, see you in the What'sUP forum :o)

Good Grief, I say!!

By good grief morning annd night on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 11:30 pm:

We are family here.. but why DO some people feel they need to say "good morning" evvery day
or "good night I am going home" ETC,, and add nothing else.lets assume we wish each other well if you have something to add great ..
Other wise why clutter...that and the few moving .gif image thingys seems to be what hastened these added pages it seems."{good night" I say..

By danbury on Tuesday, November 2, 2004 - 03:13 am:

A "user survey" on Pasty.Cam? Now that would be degrading. I feel that it's their (MC"T" & Co.) site, and they can do with it whatever they want. As little as I can hold back in the discusisons once in a while, I think it's good for me to see the main page without all the banter concentrating on the pictures, which more often than not means concentrating on how beautiful life is.
Personally, I think "user surveys" are the best recipe for pointless mediocrisy. Just like, say, cars or movies.
And if they decided to go way back and strictly allow photo-related posts only, putting away with the What'sUP page and especially the add-on's (which I think will stay mostly rather short, or, in case of VOTE after today hopefully, die down once in a while), I'd miss the discussions but keep on following the site for the very reason I started: sometimes beautiful, sometimes interesting, sometimes funny (remember the truck literally "in" the street?) pictures from a corner of this world I've never been to, but that seems to be a place I'd love to be. Once in a while at least.
No matter what the result is, thanks for trying the new format.

By irritated on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 11:13 pm:

It appears to me that the new format allows for people to communicate private conversations for the rest of us to wade through, and they aren't paying any long distance charges. I say get an email account and lets get back to the pasty.cam.

By a thread should be started on Monday, November 1, 2004 - 11:42 pm:

I hope it is not every day ..I fear it will be..I like some but there should be a true chat area for on going CHATTER eh. or at least a thread for the hunter group perhaps.
