PROVERBS WITH PUNCH

Past-E-Mail: Various Topics: Politics and Religion, Ketchup or Gravy: PROVERBS WITH PUNCH
By
Heikki (Heikki) on Saturday, February 9, 2008 - 02:19 pm:

I've always admired people that have reduced much wisdom to few words. It would be interesting sharing these old saws, the ones we found profound and have never forgotten. Please do not search the net unless your memory needs a little 'tweaking', and if you find a posting with which you disagree, simply post another proverb as a counterpoint. No need to parse each sentence or word. Let it stand alone. Let's try to keep this thread tidy. Thx

Here's my first contribution and one of my favorites, an ancient Chinese proverb:

I hear.....and I forget
I see......and I remember
I do.......and I understand

Seems tho it has cursed me personally with its truth! Not a bad thing I guess.

----------ANYWAY------

People are unreasonable, illogical and self centered. Love them anyway. If you do good, people will accuse of selfish ulterior motives. Do good anyway. If you are successful you win false friends. Be successful anyway.
The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway. Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable. Be honest and frank anyway. People favor underdogs but for only top days. Fight for some underdog anyway. What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. Build anyway.
People really need help but may attack you if you help them. Help them anyway. Give the world the best you have and you get kicked in the teeth!
Give the world the best you've got--ANYWAY!

Quote:

Author: William Congreve
Music hath charms to soothe the savage breast,
To soften rocks, or bend a knotted oak.
The Mourning Bride. Act i. Sc. 1.

Strange, I can't find such a quotation attributed to Bramston today(Of course I've only had one cuppa kahvi so far today.)

However, Bartlett's shows the following:

Quote:

Author: James Bramston
What ’s not devoured by Time’s devouring hand?
Where ’s Troy, and where ’s the Maypole in the Strand?
Art of Politics.

Author: James Bramston
But Titus said, with his uncommon sense,
When the Exclusion Bill was in suspense:
“I hear a lion in the lobby roar;
Say, Mr. Speaker, shall we shut the door
And keep him there, or shall we let him in
To try if we can turn him out again
Art of Politics.

Author: James Bramston
So Britain’s monarch once uncovered sat,
While Bradshaw bullied in a broad-brimmed hat.
Man of Taste.

Is this the Bramston in question?

James Bramston is the same Bramston whom I quoted previously. The source is a public speaker's deskbook, it contains some less popular quotations than is found in Bartlett's.

"Lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them And the angel said unto them, 'Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger'"

" I will take the time, I have left to live, and I will give it all that I have left to give, I will live my days, for my fellow men, And I live in Praise of that moment when, I was able to begin again. I will start anew I will make amends. And I will make quite certain that the story ends, on a note of Hope, on a strong Amen, and I thank the World, and remember when, I was able to begin again!" Ebenezer Scrooge from The musical Scrooge (music and lyrics by Leslie Bricusse.)

An elderly Chinese woman had two large pots, each hung on the ends of a pole which she carried across her neck.

One of the pots had a crack in it while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water.

At the end of the long walks from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full.

For a full two years this went on daily, with the woman bringing home only one and a half pots of water..
Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments.

But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it could only do half of what it had been made to do.

After two years of what it perceived to be bitter failure, it spoke to the woman one day by the stream.'I am ashamed of myself, because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house.'

The old woman smiled, 'Did you notice that there are flowers on your side of the path, but not on the other pot's side?'

'That's because I have always known about your flaw, so I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back, you water them.'

For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table.

Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house.'

Each of us has our own unique flaw. But it's the cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives together so very interesting and rewarding.

You've just got to take each person for what they are and look for the good in them.

SO, to all of my cracked pot friends, have a great day and remember to smell the flowers on your side of the path!

When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy. When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.

Odottavan aika on pitkä - Literally "The time is long for one who waits" (or even more strictly "The time of one who waits is long").

The difference is that pitkä is definite and pitkää is indefinite 'long'. Odottavan aika on pitkää would translate literally as "Time is long for one who waits". Not a big deal really... =)
