If you've recently driven through Harvey (just outside of Marquette), you may have noticed a rather tall snowman, decked out with a beautiful scarf and big red mittens. He's standing outside the Marquette Motorlodge in Harvey, ready to welcome whoever decides to stop by. Art Brabbs snapped a shot of his great big smile and estimates that this guy stands over 20 feet tall. Now that's a lot of snow piled high!

Art must have been on a mission to find snowmen, since he also spotted the guy in the second photo at an employee picnic table. He said he's been there for so many days, he's starting to give the employee's a bad reputation. :->

Has anyone checked the man at the picnic table? Maybe he is real but covered in snow. Some people will bear anything for a smoke!

Thanks for the laugh on another snowy day here north of Harbor Springs. This is certainly been an old-fashioned winter.

How cool is that to be greeted by a snowman like that? We built one like that when we were kids. He stood in front of our house. Then my mom had us make giant snowballs and she carved things out of them. We had a deer, a person, santa claus and things like that. My mom was fantastic and amazing when I was growing up.

AWESOME stuff...saw that big guy on Sunday! Surprised he made it through the rain.

Question: what are the objects that were used to make the giant snowman's eyes (my own are not so great or maybe I could tell)?

By Joanne Sherrick (Shedoesnails) on Tuesday, December 30, 2008 - 08:48 am:

love the snoman. When my kids were younger they would always make Mom a snowman. sometimes even a whole family of snowmen. Now that they are older I have to make my own.

By Art Brabbs (Transplant1977) on Tuesday, December 30, 2008 - 10:24 am:

Kathyrn the big blue eyes are in fact blue spot lights that are wired and turned on at night.

Did anyone see the recent news clip about the HUGE snowman someone built in Anchorage Alaska?
Seems the powers that be ticketed them, wanted it down cause it didn't fit/look good for town/neighborhoods image, land use!---In Alaska?
Give us a break! EH!

OK, so what is the world record for the largest snowman?? Does anybody know? I wonder if this one is even close...

By David C Cloutier (Dccloutier) on Tuesday, December 30, 2008 - 10:48 am:

Well I found the answer to my question in Wikipedia...

The record for the world's largest snowman was set in February 1999 in Bethel, Maine. The snowman was named "Angus, King of the Mountain" in honor of the then current governor of Maine, Angus King. It was 113 feet, 7 inches tall and weighed over 9,000,001 pounds.[2]

This record was broken in 2008 when the world's largest snow-woman was constructed, again, in Bethel, Maine. She stood 122 ft, 1 in tall, and was named in honor of Olympia Snowe, a U.S. Senator representing Maine.[3]

Bill Haller (Mr. Bill) just pointed out that in 2003 there was a BIG Frosty called, Chilly Willy. He greeted the folks at the Dairy Queen here in Houghton.

When my now 33-year-old dtr. was little she sold snowmen. Actually, she only got one taker. She built a snowman on the neighbors' lawn for a quarter. Everyone needs a snowman! Especially senior citizens!

An interesting historical footnote -- at least to me... I lived in Harvey in the 60s and 70s. One of my classmates at Silver Creek Elementary School was John Zawada. He lived in that hotel -- his family ran it, I believe. His high-tech family owned a color tv. That was where, for the first time ever, I saw Star Trek in color. Woo hoo!

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Tuesday, December 30, 2008 - 01:40 pm:

Was chilly willy made from a pile of snow-plowed-snow?

By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Tuesday, December 30, 2008 - 01:54 pm:

I saw a news story about somewhere in Wis. where they built a giant snowman and the city made them demolish it for safety reasons. If it toppled over or collapsed during a thaw it could seriously injure or even kill someone. Although the giant snowman sure does look "cool".

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, December 30, 2008 - 04:22 pm:

I saw the story about the one in Alaska. The town was trying to make them take it down because of the traffic snarls it created in the neighborhood, if I remember correctly. The last I heard, it was still standing because nobody else wanted it down, though, silly spoil sports, trying to get a cool snowman removed in the dead of winter! Huge ones are really cool! They would be even cooler if they were clean snow, not dirty snow like the ones pictured. Oh well, huge is fun, anyway. :-)

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Tuesday, December 30, 2008 - 06:36 pm:

Are you kiddin me? There's only one real "Snowman" and we all know who he is!

By Snowman (Snowman) on Wednesday, December 31, 2008 - 08:31 am:

AWWW shucks Uncle Chuck! At least I have one fan and what a fan he is!

Happy New Year!
