In our Shoebox Memory series over the years we have presented many favorite old photos from various contributors to the Pasty Cam. Today let me revisit one of my own personal favorites from the Archives, as we also conclude a multi-part Pasty Cameo about the beginnings of Pasty Central.

Grace LaMotte and Kenny Pasanen are the two smiling faces, and the guy behind the camera is MTU grad Jonathan Hopper, the original Pasty Camist (and my son). This picture appeared in Newsweek Magazine back in 2004.

Completing the Pasty Cameo we began last month - about the history of this enterprise - had an unexpected occurance along the way, as you will hear at the conclusion of the 3 minute slideshow.

Today Edie and I conclude two weeks of travel around the eastern U.S. for the holidays. The Pasty Cam comes to you from Saginaw, a Saturday night stopover on our way back up north.

Have a good week, and a Happy New Year :o)

GOOD MORNING, MEMORIES ARE FOREVER. I JUST WISH THAT WHEN I WAS YOUNGER I WOULD ASK QUESTIONS AND SOME HOW RECORD THEM. I WOULD LIKE TO WISH A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO LAURIE DUBE.

Have always liked this picture - Jon did a wonderful job of capturing the warmth and beauty of two wonderful people. Thanks for bringing this one back!

Looks to be another vote for ketchup with your pasty!

Thanks for the pic! I recognized it immediately as the pic I had seen in Newsweek and first became acquainted with this site! Super!

I'll bet Grace is laughing 'cause she has gravy in her cup. :) I guess some of us are on the wrong 'page' today....discussing 'cooking vs not cooking', 'ketchup vs gravy'. Well, Charlie, as they say, 'when the cat's away, the mice will play'....with your site. :)

MUSTARD??????

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Monday, December 29, 2008 - 08:02 am:

Yup! my sweetie likes mustard on his pasty. Well, actually he likes to put the mustard on the plate and dip it or csoop some on his fork with the pasty. Because he does not really put it ON the pasty, matter? ha! ha! ha!

How great to see Kenny after all these years have past. I used to work with him . Does anyone know where I could get a copy of the newsweek that him and Grace are in? I think it was around 1970 since I have seen Kenny.

O.K. I'm a newby at this site and would like to inquire about the pasties that can be ordered. Do they have a good amount of meat in them? Do they have rhubarb in them (hope not)? I've purchased pasties from Dreamland near Manistique and they're fantastic, not too many veggies, just enough, and lots of meat...not sure if they ship them? I would like to order some (along with my Uncle on the East Coast). Thanks for the help.

Mary says: Welcome James. I'm assuming you're asking about RUTABAGAS, not Rhubarb. Here's the list of ingredients that our delicious U.P. Pasties contain (taken from our Questions page:

What's in the pasty recipe?

Our pasties are made with 75 percent beef, 25 percent pork, potatoes, rutabaga, carrotts, onions, spices, and a 100 percent vegetable shortening pastry crust. Our pasty recipe is a trade secret, of course.

Give them a try, you can order them here: Delicious U.P. Pasties

Mary,

Thanks for your response to my questions and for correcting me. I new what I wanted to say (rutbaga) but instead asked about rhubarb in pasties (yuck). We will try them for sure. Thanks.
