Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Sunday, December 21, 2008 - 09:12 am:

Edie and I spent the night in Negaunee last week on our way south to visit relatives over the holidays. We slipped out of the U.P. just ahead of some heavy snow days that hit the midwest and east coast. Today winter officially arrives in the Northern Hemisphere.

Iron Street in Negaunee is where a moment in time was captured in 1899 for this week's Shoebox Memory, courtesy of the Theodore G. Hall Collection at the Michigan Archives. It appears the crew made it at least as far as the Saloon.

The Pasty Cam originates this morning from Williamsburg, Virginia (where there is no snow), after a number of snags in our travels, including a six hour traffic jam in Chicago. That last chapter of the Pasty Central Story we've been waiting for will have to wait until your weary webmaster can get caught up. Our apologies for those whose pasty deliveries were delayed this week because of the weather. Hopefully we can reshedule for a New Year's feast.

Have a good week, and a Merry Christmas :o)

Love the picture today.

Have a great week traveling. Wish I were there!!!! We've got less than a temperature today, and about 6 inches of new snow.

Those snowbanks are amazing. I would have loved to have seen Iron Street back in it's glory. We are planning a trip to Williamsburg next year.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, December 21, 2008 - 09:28 am:

I would love to go with you to Williamsburg. Mr. Deb would probably stay home, though. He doesn't like it out there.

I lived on Gold street in Negaunee in the 70's for about 6 months...

Continued wonderful, winter weather in the Flint area this morning. Received additional new snow last night, but with all the blowing and drifting, who could tell? Still had plenty of people at church who braved the weather for the cantata!

GREAT PICTURE. MY MOTHER, WHO WILL SOON BE 102 YRS. OLD, WAS RAISED AT 733 SNOW ST. WHICH IS NO LONGER THERE. THEY MOVED A LOT OF THE TOWN DUE TO CAVEINS, I UNDERSTAND. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL.

By Laurie B. (Ratherberiding) on Sunday, December 21, 2008 - 01:37 pm:

Jimn, my husband's grandparents also lived on Snow St. They have recently opened some of the caving ground area. It's called "Old Town".

By Ray Laakaniemi (Rlaakan) on Sunday, December 21, 2008 - 02:06 pm:

See! I told you they had more snow in the good old days! And no snowblowers either!

By Jim Nicholas (Jimn) on Sunday, December 21, 2008 - 02:12 pm:

LAURIE B. THANK YOU. I WILL HAVE TO TELL MY MON, SHE WILL BE TICKLED TO HEAR THAT. JIM

Laurie, Danielle my daughter has been offered a chance to reenact in Williamsburg. We have applied for guest reenactment status through our reenactment group. Hope to be able to someday go there not as a tourist but as a reenactor. Danielle was presented an award as the Michigan history teacher of the year this fall.

HAVING A HEAT WAVE, A TROPICAL HEATWAVE. AT LEAST I CAN THINK ABOUT IT ;O)

HEY! THE LIONS ARE KEEPING IT A PERFECT SEASON. LET'S AT LEAST GIVE THEM THAT MUCH.

By Marian Latimer (Colliemom) on Sunday, December 21, 2008 - 07:46 pm:

I have been searching for photos of the tunnels through the snow and the wooden sidewalks, are any of them out there online? I am spending my first holiday season and winter out of MI. Culture shock to be sure.
