With the cold temps we've been experiencing here in the Keweenaw, many of the open lakes, ponds and rivers have frozen over, but not the Tobacco River, just outside of Gay. Steve Haagen snapped a couple of shots of the river as it rushes on it's way. You can see by the first shot, that it is starting to take on its winter ice cover, but the water is still moving along at a good speed. The running water is keeping a trail open that leads directly to the mouth of the river, where the Tobacco joins Lake Superior. Steve's second photo shows the icy mouth of the river, with its tributaries adding to the volume of the Big Lake. I'm sure it won't be much longer and this will be completely iced over until spring thaw.

rushing water keep it flowing .... or springs with an average aquifer temp of 45-48 degrees keep it flowing !!?? In the summer we call springs and streams COLD, in the winter we call them WARM !! Going winter rafting in a couple weeks, always interesting to feel how "warm" it is (relatively speaking) when you get down on a river out of the wind and near the "warm" water. GREAT PIC !! headed to the YOOP just after christmas for a good week of fun.

Does anyone know why it is called the Tobacco River? It certainly is the color of tobacco----but is there some specific reason for it being named what it is?

Deb & Ron,
So sorry to see about your Dad. My sympathies to you and your family. May the memories you have in your heart, carry you through this difficult time.

Please be careful if you're traveling home tomorrow. The northern part of the state will be getting hit hard by some 'nasty' weather!

Laure

Hello from sunny Mississippi, especially to Bootjack babe Dorothy Stewart. People have finally stopped freaking out about the 2 snowflakes that found their way down (no doubt from the Copper Country) here the other day. I can't wait to come home to visit friends and family. The Copper Country is truly the most beautiful place on Earth. Happy Holidays to all!

Hey Jeff--where are you going rafting?

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Saturday, December 13, 2008 - 07:37 pm:

OH- THE WEATHER OUTSIDE IS FRIGHTFUL, BUT INSIDE IS SO DELIGHTFUL, SINCE I HAVE NO PLACE TO GO-

LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW. :O)

IT WAS SAID THAT THE MOON WAS AT IT'S BRIGHTEST LAST NIGHT. I LOOKED OUT IN THE YARD AND SAW MY SNOWMAN OUT THERE. USUALLY I DO NOT SEE ANYTHING OUT THERE. WE ARE SUPPOSE TO GET SOME RAIN AND STUFF LIKE THAT TOMORROW.

WISHING DEB AND HER FAMILY A SAFE TRIP HOME.

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Sunday, December 14, 2008 - 11:05 am:

Hello,

It is 42 degrees here and the snow is melting a little bit, so is my snowman in the yard. ;O(
He will be back next year.
