This snowy vista was snapped by Karl Berg, somewhere overlooking the Sturgeon River. I can tell you that the Sturgeon is located along the Houghton/Baraga County line, but as for the exact location Karl is standing with his camera, no can do. Maybe that is exactly Karl's intention though, so that this peaceful looking spot stays "his" secret and won't be invaded by the rest of us. We'll just have to consider ourselves lucky to get the view through his eyes.

Today's Pasty Cam reminds me of hike we took one summer up on Crestview when the kids were still kids. We were exploring the edges of the clearing in some really thick bushes and trees, and there appeared to be nothing but open sky on the other side. So we pushed on through the heavy growth and stepped right on the edge of a hundred foot drop-off overlooking Eagle River. The scene was very much like Karl's view of the Sturgeon.

Happy Birthday to you mickill mouse, and many more to come.

My parents were both born and raised in Calumet. My moms parents owned a restaurant on 5th street in Calumet when my mom was growing up.
Thanks for the birthday wish. I have not decided what I want to do this year. I had a rough 2and a half 3 years and did not want to celebrate my birhday, but for some reason I want to do something today.
To tell everybody the truth, Since I discovred this site, Pasty cams and what's up, and all the pictures of the Keweenaw- for some reason I have felt better. I feel so much better I am going to say how old I am. Today I turn 53 yrs. old.;O))) My sweetie (Bill) keeps asking what I would like to do today. I do know I would like a pasty...
I love the pictures and the postings and the other sites to go to for information and to order stuff. Lots of THANKS to Charlie and Mary and all the people who put this together. Hey Mary! I knew that was Lake Linden in yesterdays picture. Let Me Stop.

Hi Mickill mouse, you would meet the age requirements for our group at work that we call the Hall of Wisdom--experienced, mature...ok, ok, "grizzled veterns" probably is a better description. Happy B-day.
A nice picture of a way more dramatic landscape than we see here in SE Michigan. We do have snow, which is a nice change from our usual dead grass.

Happy birthday Mick. Enjoy the day and seek out your pasty. Maybe Bill could put a candle on it and use it for a birthday cake. I have heard that the miners sometimes heated their pasty with candles. Could have just been something that was told to me when I was gullible. Cold here in Berkley this morning. Couldn't sleep so I am starting the day early. About two hours less sleep today. Our exchange student had second thoughts this morning on going to school. He really is a nice boy. We also have another border, Guiness, my sons Lab. He is staying here while Justin and family head to Florida. Precious sent me a note telling me she had fed the dog. To late, he lied, and I fed him again. Justins animals gain weight when I take care of them. If the bowls are empty I fill them. No wonder Jimmie the fat white cat is so fat. He claims it is muscle not fat. I hear a donut calling so off to the kitchen to celebrate Mickills birthday.

Thanks to everybody for the birthday wishes.
Also, our neighbor let us borrow his Wii game and I decided to purchase one. We used the game for bowling and I bowled 3 srtikes in a row. That is something I never did when I did bowl. My sweetie is still trying to get the hang of it. The tennis game was fun, too. Only I play better than the game. It was funny.
Put a candle in the donut Mikie ;0))

Mikie, I recall reading an article about Cornish miners heating their pasties by placing them on a shovel that was heated by a candle.

mickell mouse: happy birthday. Was it the Parkside your mom owned?
By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, December 5, 2008 - 10:27 am:
Thanks Matt, I guess Uncle Charlie was telling the truth. He kept me in awe of his knowledge when I was a kid. He was in his late ninetys when I was around seven. He turned one hundred when Ike was the president and got a card that the president signed personally. Or at least someone signed his name. His name was Charlie Chaput, and he lived in Hubble in the home that Mary Drews' son lives in now. Mick the donut was great. Guiness thought he was going to get some of it. No chance.

My grandparents owned the Mackinaw Pasty Shop when I was a kid, and they had on the walls pictures of miners heating their pasties on a shovel over a flame (probably a candle). The pasty would often be hot from the oven in the morning, and the miners would wrap it close to their chest to keep it warm, then a quick reheat over the candle. Thanks for the memory!!

TO MAIJA IN COMMERCE TOWNSHIP (MAIJA)
It was not Parkside. My mom was born in 1932 so it was around the time my mom started school. My mom never told me when her parents started the restaurant, but I believe it was when my mom started middle school in Calumet. I think it was Washington Middle School, then she went to Calumet High School.
