What's the name of the establishment where the Pasty Cam found the moose in 1998?

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, November 18, 2008 - 07:34 am:

Doohhh....keep forgetting to look at the "What's UP" archives. WTG! Starting new job tomorrow, not much, but better than nothing with unemployment running out. Good morning all.

Good morning! Boy, it must have really been warm on this day in 2004 judging by the little boy in his shirt sleeves.

Have a great day everybody! Not very warm here, that's for sure.

From the look on his face, it might be -40 and he's freezing to death too.........

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, November 18, 2008 - 09:05 am:

I love Jon's photo of my favorite buoy tender, the Sundew! I had that pic as my background for a long while. I used to watch 'her' at work, breaking ice on Round Lake when we lived in Charlevoix. So sad that 'she' is no longer in use and may be auctioned off. Didn't do too well as a museum in Duluth.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Tuesday, November 18, 2008 - 09:10 am:

Good Morning Pasty People. Barbie made some pasties again yesterday, second time in a month. And I didn't have to ask. Once a week on Wednesday is my goal. I think she made them because I went over to her Dad's and picked her a whole mess of greens last week. It is a lot of work to get even four or more quart bags put up in the freezer. The first thing you have to do is give them a good looking over. Called lookin down here. Who out there ain't never had no fresh greens. I did pick me some turnips along with them greens too, maybe that was the hint to make pasty for me. It sure wasn't because I was good. She made apple pie too, but she hollered at me for putting the whip cream spray can back in the fridge empty the last time I used it.

Speaking of freezing to death it was 19 degrees before sunup. I was thinking of where that Moose was at and got stuck on that place where the Murder movie was made up there. As you can tell I am still.

p.s. I meant to say lookum not lookin. That means slapin the leafs and rinse um off.

Was Dreamland Restaurant on Bootjack Rd. the correct answer?
Capt. Paul: I like the Scottish Highland profile pic. It looks like you had good weather. Auch aye!

By Karen Ziemnick (Kziemnick) on Tuesday, November 18, 2008 - 09:27 am:

Yes, this is the entrance of the Dreamland Hotel in Bootjack.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, November 18, 2008 - 09:44 am:

Dia duit ar maidin is go raibh maith agat!!

That photo was taken just south of where my ancestoral family was from in Strathnaver at the traditional border of MacKay Country. We had rain the first day we were in Scotland and the last day; in between, we had 14 days of wonderful summer weather.

The Dr. also has a photo of Scotland in her profile standing at Loch Ness. Unfortunitely, we didn't see any monster even after offering some Dutch tourists to Nessie.......

By Eugene Zuverink (Zube) on Tuesday, November 18, 2008 - 10:04 am:

Man David you picken greens down there yet?
Were picken ice cicles here

By Tom (Tom) on Tuesday, November 18, 2008 - 01:48 pm:

I thought the moose was in an Escanaba restaurant. More like Gladstone, I guess. Wonder how long that mosse has been in the Dreamland. When I used frequent that place there was no moose. I hope it does a thriving business. It was barely making it when I went there. I used climb the steel poles in the bar area like the natives climbed trees in the South Pacific area. A WWII vet showed me how.
Jay Lanctot never liked one to do that. I can't even remember how to spell his name.
He once owned a Standard gas station on the corner in Hancock.

By Richard Wieber (Dickingrayling) on Tuesday, November 18, 2008 - 02:47 pm:

Tom You came pretty close to spelling Jay's name right, but I can't also. Lived next to his folks on Elm St in the mid fifties. Bought gas from Jay's station. Right across from the Scott Hotel. Time flies....

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Tuesday, November 18, 2008 - 10:23 pm:

Say, just how fast was that moose runnin' when he hit the wall?? There used to be a moose head at the Delona Restaurant in the Bay View area, 'tween Gladstone and Escanaba. We got probably 5" of snow yesterday afternoon, here in Cornell. The roads were packed snow and very slick.

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 - 02:25 am:

1 to 2" inches of snow here Tues. AM in St. Clair county, Low 20s f in the AM. Port Huron on up had 4" plus. Daughter in law Nancy called today from Kalkaska. They have 11" there already in that lake effect snow belt zone. (Snowmobilers mecca!)

We are still picking Turnips here that are still growing! Greens and all. Turnips go in the pastys Syl makes! Red & Green Cabbage, Broccoli, and Parsley also still growing out in the garden. (those can stand a frost). We often pick fresh Parsley in the snow at Christmas! The deer and rabbits will get a share of those "greens" still growing. Everything else dead though. Still getting decent apples from the trees, she's making apple sauce plus homemade pies! Busy cutting several of our Emerald Ash Borer killed Ash trees for firewood! ---
Propane cost is out of sight now!

Dave---"Anatomy of a Murder" was made up in the "Big Bay" area in 1959

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 - 06:45 am:

I did not know you can burn 'emerald ash' wood as fire wood?
Do you mean "Big Bay" up by Alpena?

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 - 08:16 am:

No, it's Big Bay by Marquette.

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 - 09:37 am:

I do believe the movie, "Anatomy of a Murder" was filmed in Alpena and/or the murder happened in Alpena.

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 - 10:10 am:

It happened in Marquette and part of it was made at the tavern. I have no idea where I came up with Alpena? Maybe it is because we are ready to take a trip up there for the weekend now that the price of gas has gone down.

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 - 12:49 pm:

Anatomy of a Murder, adapted by Wendell Mayes from the novel by Robert Traver (pen name of John D. Voelker, a Michigan Supreme Court judge from 1957-1959) was indeed filmed in Big Bay, Marquette, Ishpeming, and Michigamme, Michigan (all in da UP, and nowhere near Alpena).

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 - 02:27 pm:

I knew the movie name Anatomy Of A Murder Producer/director Otto Preminger once more pushed the envelope in Anatomy of a Murder by utilizing technical terminology referring to many sexual terms never heard in movies before. I was up Early Birding when the Moose question came on and saw that Capt, Paul had the wrong answer Quincy's, me being from $ Bay. So unlike Gary I went to the archives, but I only got the picture, no text. I could not bring to mind where it was, I been in Dreamland many times, but got my mind stuck an could not re-call Mt. Shasta until just this moment that I also been in many times.

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 - 09:57 pm:

HOW WOULD I HAVE EVER KNOWN THAT BIG BAY, MARQUETTE, ISHPEMING, AND MICHIGAMME, MICHIGAN IS NO WHERE NEAR ALPENA IF YOU HAD TOLD ME.

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 - 09:58 pm:

IF YOU HAD 'NOT' TOLD ME.
