The history teacher in me can't let this mistake continue. Armistice Day is 11/11/18 and was called that because it was the day that the Armistice was enacted between the fighting parties and brought about a cease fire, there was no treaty signed that day. The word loosely translated means to lay down arms. The date and time chosen was the 11 day of the 11 month at the 11 hour. If the generals of the day hadn't been so melodramaic it could have been enacted a week earlier as the German troops were crushed and the Allies were in control. The Treaty that brought about the end of WWI and laid much of impetus for the events that would lead to WWII was signed in May of 1919 at the Palace of Versailles, thus its name. Veterns Day came about in the mid-50s because by then not only had WWI, WWII and Korea happened, but there were still surviving members of the Civil War as well. Instead of having mutliple commerative days Congress picked 11/11 because it was the day that soldiers laid down their arms for what was supposed have been the last time. It is also supposed to be a day to remember surviving soldiers as opposed to Memorial Day which commemorates those have have died. So very sad that they were so wrong about the war to end all wars to date America has added several more war veterns to this day. May God give peace to those who have sacrificed so much so that I could know freedom!

Contemplating on all the posts today I started thinking of my family members who are/were vets. My husband and his six brothers all served, from medic in WWII thru the 70's in all branches. Now my grandson Jason is in Afghanestan, Aaron is in training near D.C. I remember how sad my own dad was that he wasn't taken into the army. Because of us two little girls and a missing digit on one foot. Also Aunt Virginia,(Slattery) from Hubbell, class of "39"? served many years in the 1940's and 50's in the WACs. I'm so proud of them all.

President Eisenhower signed bill HR7786 into effect on May 26, 1954 officially changing Armistice Day to Veterans Day. Today is a day to honor all Veterans and especially War Vets.
