Today has been known as Veteran's Day since 1954. By what name was this day known prior to that?

By john mich (Johnofmi) on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 - 04:38 am:

Armistice Day. My Mother always called today by that name. It was named after the day on which the treaty ending WW1 was signed. Anybody know the name of that treaty and which year it was signed?

TO EACH AND EVERY PERSON (VETERAN) WHO SERVED THIS COUNTRY TO PROTECT ME, I WANT TO SAY 'THANK YOU' AND IT IS EVER SO APPRECIATED.

By robert (Robze) on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 - 05:16 am:

John I think you got the early bird with the correct answer but to your question I say it's the Treaty of Versailles signed 28 June 1919, but the U.S. did not sign this treaty.

By robert (Robze) on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 - 05:22 am:

I would like to acknowledge and thank all my fellow Veterans on this special day.

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 - 06:02 am:

With deepest appreciation to all our veterans - we honor and respect your service to America.

Always remember: "Freedom is not Free"

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 - 07:10 am:

Good Morning! My heartfelt thanks to all of you Veterans, who have faithfully served our country and protected us! You have kept us free! To those who are still in our military, whether on active duty, in the Reserves, or in the National Guard or in the Coast Guard, etc: we thank you for your service to our country, fighting for our freedoms, including the freedom of speech and the right to vote! Thank you for everything!

BTW, my parents always referred to Veterans' Day as Armistice Day, too. :-)

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 - 07:27 am:

And thanks to my late dad, who was a veteran, for his part in my birth on this day 57 years ago! (Like how I worked that in?)

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 - 07:30 am:

The Treaty of Versailles in 1919. Or the one actually signed on Armistice Day 11/11/1918.

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 - 07:31 am:

Interesting Marsha - we have a close friend in Genesee, who is a veteran and also celebrates his birthday today! Small world...

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 - 07:49 am:

Remembering my Dad who served in the British armed forces during W.W. II, before I was born and we came to America. Is there any society on earth that has not been impacted by war?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 - 08:32 am:

Good morning! Yes, my parents called it Armistice Day also. Thank you Veterans! My father quit high school in WWII to join the Navy. He finished when he returned though. Thankfully, for him, the war was nearly over.

Happy Birthday, Marsha!!! I hope you have a wonderful day.

The 2005 photo was breathtaking!

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 - 08:48 am:

Happy Veterans Day (and Happy "Active Service Day") to my neice Jeri who just returned last week from her third deployment to Iraq. I hope she does not have to go back there. And THANK YOU to all the veterans who have served so that we can freely and safely walk our streets.

Pasty friends...

I posted this blog entry about the old Bunny Bread sign in Marquette.

http://www.yoopersteez.com/blog/upper-peninsula/bunny-bread-sign-a-marquette-icon/

I've been looking hard to find an old photo of the Bunny Bread sign, but can't seem to find one anywhere.

Just wondering if anyone out there has seen one or anything else.

Cindy:
You are correct. It is interesting that the Treaty of Versailles was actually signed on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month (November 11), 1918...

Bugsy...I remember the jingle: "That's what I said...Bunny Bread!"

By Liz Timmer (Lizziet) on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 - 02:56 pm:

The history teacher in me can't let this mistake continue. Armistice Day is 11/11/18 and was called that because it was the day that the Armistice was enacted between the fighting parties and brought about a cease fire, there was no treaty signed that day. The word loosely translated means to lay down arms. The date and time chosen was the 11 day of the 11 month at the 11 hour. If the generals of the day hadn't been so melodramaic it could have been enacted a week earlier as the German troops were crushed and the Allies were in control. The Treaty that brought about the end of WWI and laid much of impetus for the events that would lead to WWII was signed in May of 1919 at the Palace of Versailles, thus its name. Veterns Day came about in the mid-50s because by then not only had WWI, WWII and Korea happened, but there were still surviving members of the Civil War as well. Instead of having mutliple commerative days Congress picked 11/11 because it was the day that soldiers laid down their arms for what was supposed have been the last time. It is also supposed to be a day to remember surviving soldiers as opposed to Memorial Day which commemorates those have have died. So very sad that they were so wrong about the war to end all wars to date America has added several more war veterns to this day. May God give peace to those who have sacrificed so much so that I could know freedom!

Contemplating on all the posts today I started thinking of my family members who are/were vets. My husband and his six brothers all served, from medic in WWII thru the 70's in all branches. Now my grandson Jason is in Afghanestan, Aaron is in training near D.C. I remember how sad my own dad was that he wasn't taken into the army. Because of us two little girls and a missing digit on one foot. Also Aunt Virginia,(Slattery) from Hubbell, class of "39"? served many years in the 1940's and 50's in the WACs. I'm so proud of them all.

By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Tuesday, November 11, 2008 - 08:22 pm:

President Eisenhower signed bill HR7786 into effect on May 26, 1954 officially changing Armistice Day to Veterans Day. Today is a day to honor all Veterans and especially War Vets.
