I came across a lot of neils' pictures last night and looked at all of them and the Bond Falls was one of the pictures. I sat here for about 2 hours looking at his pictures. They were great ;O)))

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, November 10, 2008 - 06:58 am:

Good morning!

Remembering the men from the Fitz today. Cheryl, thinking about you.

My grandson has a real interest in the Fitz and he's only 10. They studied it in school a couple of weeks ago and he said his teacher couldn't believe how much he knew about it because of me and grandpa teaching him. I need to send him the picture of the bell. He's always talking about the bell. He was so impressed when we told him that we went to Whitefish Point last summer. I think we're going to have to take him there one of these times.

Have a good day everybody! We're not supposed to get out of the 30's this week, with either rain or snow 4 out of the 5 days. Yippee!!!!

Oh yeah, we have that same picture of the "Home of the Fighting Sioux". That's quite the building. It even rivals the XCel Center out here.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Monday, November 10, 2008 - 06:59 am:

I'll be remembering, and so will my class. I'll have a model of a
freighter on the table for our morning meeting.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Monday, November 10, 2008 - 08:10 am:

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy.

With a load of iron ore - 26,000 tons more
Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty
That good ship and true was a bone to be chewed
When the gales of November came early

The ship was the pride of the American side
Coming back from some mill in Wisconson
As the big freighters go it was bigger than most
With a crew and the Captain well seasoned.

Concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms
When they left fully loaded for Cleveland
And later that night when the ships bell rang
Could it be the North Wind they'd been feeling.

The wind in the wires made a tattletale sound
And a wave broke over the railing
And every man knew, as the Captain did, too,
T'was the witch of November come stealing.

The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait
When the gales of November came slashing
When afternoon came it was freezing rain
In the face of a hurricane West Wind

When supper time came the old cook came on deck
Saying fellows it's too rough to feed ya
At 7PM a main hatchway caved in
He said fellas it's been good to know ya.

The Captain wired in he had water coming in
And the good ship and crew was in peril
And later that night when his lights went out of sight
Came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Does anyone know where the love of God goes
When the words turn the minutes to hours
The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay
If they'd fifteen more miles behind her.

They might have split up or they might have capsized
They may have broke deep and took water
And all that remains is the faces and the names
Of the wives and the sons and the daughters.

Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings
In the ruins of her ice water mansion
Old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams,
The islands and bays are for sportsmen.

And farther below Lake Ontario
Takes in what Lake Erie can send her
And the iron boats go as the mariners all know
With the gales of November remembered.

In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed
In the Maritime Sailors' Cathedral
The church bell chimed, 'til it rang 29 times
For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald.

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
Superior, they say, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early.

Thankyou Cindy.....that song is so moving!

Cheryl thinking of you and your family today.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Monday, November 10, 2008 - 09:34 am:

There is a double reason to remember Cheryls dad today. He also was a marine hero of WW2, serving in the marines was one of his major bragging points. When he got the job on the Fitz he was happy as can be. The main reason for me is because Ransom Cundy was my cousin and godfather. He also was a friend. Snow here in Berkley. Snowed all night long. Can't tell how much yet since the leaves are under the snow. Jimmie the fat white cat wont leave his heat register. Had a fire in the fireplace this weekend and Jimmie the fat white cat layed in his bed looking at it. He really enjoys heat.

By Laurie B. (Ratherberiding) on Monday, November 10, 2008 - 09:46 am:

I am thinking of Cheryl today as well. Is the new baby here yet Cheryl? Happy Marine Corp birthday too. My husband is a Marine vet as is very proud of it. He's also a Seabee vet.

By theresa (Up4evr) on Monday, November 10, 2008 - 11:46 am:

Guess I will wish The Marines a Happy Birthday too. Altho I am sad , my just turned 18 Grandson will be joing the Marines in February. Hopefully he won't be in any of the wars. I pray everyday. Theresa

By Danielle L. Adams (Badkid) on Monday, November 10, 2008 - 12:06 pm:

I also have a model of the Fitz, but nowhere to put it...grr have to wait til my sister comes to get her stuff from my room. But then again, I'll have to take in consideration of my cats..they are way too nosey and wanna try and knock things over lol Maybe a cabinet with lock and key would work!!

I for sure am remembering all 29 that went down on the Fitz. Sad they had to go like that, but yet maybe we've learned some lessons from it. God bless them all. We will be talking about it in class today.

By Dunerat (Dunerat) on Monday, November 10, 2008 - 01:37 pm:

Cheryl --

May God bless you and your family today.

By Eugene Zuverink (Zube) on Monday, November 10, 2008 - 03:51 pm:

I did business with Michigan State University and I was on the campus every week. They had the bell from the Fitzgerald in there woodworking and maintenace dept. They were refinishing parts of it.I told the Supt. I wanted to see it so he took me there, I said now I want go in the room and just touch it, so I did. But it was off limits to everyone. So that was a big thrill. That was around 14 years ago

By Eugene Zuverink (Zube) on Monday, November 10, 2008 - 04:16 pm:

I must correct myself, it was a little over 13 years ago

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, November 10, 2008 - 04:52 pm:

There were a lot of lessons learned from that fateful night 33 years ago. Usually, if there is a report of a storm moving in, the ships will seek safe harbour from the waves. It is sad that it took the Fitz going down and losing all hands onboard to realize the power of Lake Superior.

The Dr. and I send our best wishes out to Cheryl and all the family members whos lives were changed forever that November night. I was too young to remember that night (and the Dr. wasn't even born yet; she was born 3 days later, winkwink ;-), but I remember my grandparents talk about the storm (they were in the Soo that night) and hearing the news come across the wire where they were staying that the Fitz was gone.....

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, November 10, 2008 - 05:23 pm:

Cheryl, my heart goes out to you and your family today! Gordon Lightfoot's song immortalized the Edmund Fitzgerald for many of us. That song, with its haunting melody, reminds us of the tremendous power that some of those storms that can come up so suddenly in the Great Lakes in November, can carry!

An early Happy Birthday wish to you, Dr Nat! I hope you have a wonderful day! :-)

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Monday, November 10, 2008 - 05:44 pm:

Cotton (Cheryl) : I told my class about your father and shared
EddyFitz' story with them. My class took turns reverently holding
my little model of the Edmund Fitzgerald while listening to Gordie
Lightfoot's moving song. Did you make it to one of the memorial
programs today?

By Snowman (Snowman) on Monday, November 10, 2008 - 05:57 pm:

In memory of Cotton's dad and all that went down during the gales of November on the Edmund Fitzgerald, may you all rest in peace and God bless you all.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, November 10, 2008 - 06:45 pm:

As always, I'll do my usual ritual tonight (in a few minutes actually). At 7:10PM, I flip in Gordan Lightfoot's "Wreck of...", pour a shot of whiskey, raise a toast to the men of the Fitz and all crewmen who have suffered the same fate, and sit back and ponder what those final moments may have been like that night........

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Monday, November 10, 2008 - 08:07 pm:

Cheryl, thinking of you and your family and remembering your dad. I thought of you and your dad when my husband and I spent the night at Whitefish Bay on Oct. 1.
