Today's series of photos come from E. Neil Harri. He was recently out at Great Sand Bay when he snapped them to share with us. His first shot just looks like your typical view of the Big Lake, until you look closer (inside the white circle area), you can see a speck of something in the water. Zooming in for a better look, he spotted a wet-suit clad individual getting ready to do some cold weather surfing. Neil then proceeded to capture the sequence of events as the surfer prepared to ride out the wave. Call me a sissy, but wet-suit or not, you wouldn't catch me surfing in Lake Superior this time of year. That guy has some real Yooper SISU for sure!

Start your Christmas shopping early this year and head on over to Neil Harri Aerial Photography and check out the selection of DVD's available. You can take an aerial fall tour starting in Keweenaw County, head over to Houghton County, Baraga County, Ontonagon and Gogebic Counties and fly over Isle Royale, too. Any one of these available DVD's would make a great gift this holiday season, but if you're thinking "snow", then stay tuned for Friday's Pasty Cam, where we'll feature a few of the WINTER aerial shots over Marquette Country. Neil says that DVD should be available in a week or so!

Oh, I'm cold just looking at the pictures. I have pics from Matquette's Little Presque. They were taken on Sept. 30, 2008. I remember the date as I phoned "the girls" in Indiana while watching them. It was to cold that day, I thought. Can't imagine how cold it was when Neil took his pics.

Holy smokes! Now only wouldn't you catch me surfing that lake at this time of year, you also wouldn't catch me putting my big toe in that lake at this time of year. That guy has guts!!!

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Monday, November 24, 2008 - 07:16 am:

great pics. How is Neil always in the right place at the right time?

As far as the surfer, the water temp is warmer than the air now, and you all walk in it :)

By Kathyrn Laughlin (Kathyl) on Monday, November 24, 2008 - 08:07 am:

Hi
There was a picture of winter surfing last year, and I sent it to a friend in California. He didn't believe it; he thought it was altered with Photoshop.

Davesou, the water sucks heat away from your body quicker than the air. And, we typically have plenty of warm clothing between us and that air. I've never been in the water with a wetsuit, though--anybody out there care to comment on how well they work?

Go get 'em surfer dude!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, November 24, 2008 - 08:56 am:

I love Neil Harri's pictures! Thanks, Neil & Mary!

As an aside, Deb S: you said that guy has guts! I might counter with something said about my husband, many years ago, when he was water-skiing on a Texas lake (when we lived down there) in the spring. A little boy asked his mom why that guy was out there on the cold lake? His mom replied, "Because he's NUTS!!!". Well, maybe the "because he's nuts" line fits the winter surfer on Mother Superior, LOL? Seriously, I am cold in some rooms of my home at this time of the year, when there are northwest winds. And that guy is out surfing in the almost frozen water???? :-)

Kathyrn--

It's surprising how warm you can stay in a good wetsuit. In the last photo, you'll note the surfer dude is wearing a full body suit, a hood, boots, and gloves. Not only is he working hard paddling out and riding, he's also working against the wetsuit's elasticity, so he's generating a good amount of body heat. You can't stay out there forever, but you usually get tired before you get too cold.

SISU is a gentle word in relation to his attitude. Sorry but I'll find adventure in a reasonable way myself! Go for it guy!

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Monday, November 24, 2008 - 09:41 am:

Cowabunga dude....maybe this guy's got guts or SISU, but maybe just frozen matter between the ears??? Not for me, thank you...I'll sit by the fire while he's out surfing.

By FJL (Langoman) on Monday, November 24, 2008 - 10:21 am:

A big advantage surfing there. No sharks........He knows what he's doing......

By SteveL (Xyooper) on Monday, November 24, 2008 - 11:04 am:

I used to do that when I was a student at Da tech...Oh how stupid I was...Never again..It snowed here overnight, I've seen enough of that stuff, time to hitch up the Airstream and head somewhere warm for the winter.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Monday, November 24, 2008 - 04:20 pm:

No Thanks, I prefer to stay dry in this weather and look at the pictures.

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Monday, November 24, 2008 - 10:14 pm:

Wet Suit? what a candy •••, that's not SISU!

By Jay Balliet (Jfactor1) on Tuesday, November 25, 2008 - 12:57 pm:

Actually, I've heard that the best surfing on the great lakes is in the late fall/winter. Supposedly you stay pretty warm in a drysuit but I'll take their word for it.

Google "Unsalted movie" for a preview clip of a movie about great lakes surfing.
