The view across Eagle Harbor is most often seen from the reverse of today's photo. This was actually snapped from George Hite's front door yesterday and in case you're having trouble orienting yourself to where you are, the Eagle Harbor beach is to the right in the photo, with the Eagle Harbor cutoff road visible as the white trail through the trees. Another recognizable landmark is the Township Hall, just to the left of the cutoff road. Just a few doors down from the Township Hall is where Neil Harri hangs his pilot hat and goggles when he's not up in the air. :->

Some of you may already be familiar with George Hite, through his webpage: EagleHarborweb.net. He calls it "An unofficial source of Eagle Harbor, Michigan news, views and information." His webpage was one of the first U.P. websites and is still going strong. The easiest way to explain today's second photo is to take a direct quote from George's webpage:

Quote:

Sailing is my favorite way of life, occupying most of the late spring, summer and early fall months. Peregrine, my Nonsuch 30, (pictured here below at Harbor dock with me and sailing partner Bruce Olson) -- is on the Lake constantly, sailing more than 1500 miles each season (2400 one summer) and visiting far flung Superior harbors and anchorages.

Peregrine

All those lines on the map above represent George's summer (2008) Lake Superior cruise, which totaled 2083 miles on the Big Lake. That's a lot of sailing!

As another "rag man", that's a lot of time before the mast.

THE GREAT LAKES DAWSON MUSEUM- ON BELLE ISLE IN DETROIT- IS A HOLDING A MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR THE EDMUND FITZGERALD. THEY HAVE AN ANCHOR FROM THE FITZ AND PEOPLE CAN LIGHT CANDLES AND PLACE THEM AROUND THE ANCHOR.

I do have to say, that's one place I definitely would not mind living in UP there. My hubby's been trying so hard to get me to move back. But right now there's my job and the grandkids as motivation to stay where I am. However, if he could get me a place in Eagle Harbor, the temptation would be way too much to resist. Great photo this morning. Thanks!!!

I enjoy George's website and journals very much...now that's someone who can write an interesting journal!

I couldn't let this go by without adding a thank you to George for his kindness a couple of boating seasons back. While we'd remembered to bring bug repellant, we hadn't brought flying insect killer and George kindly gave us a can. That sure made for much better sleeping aboard our little "Cool Breeze" a 19' Oday Mariner that we piggy backed over to Isle Royale on the Ranger III. He also welcomed us aboard for a tour and a cup of coffee. The rest of the trip was more pleasant due to his kindness. Thank's George!

I agree, Janie T, George is a very interesting writer. His writings are so vivid you feel you're right there in the room with him...sipping a glass of good wine. :) Just wish he'd write more often!

I have one question of George....did you see or feel a spirit out there somewhere on you journys? That's mine!!! My body is back here but my spirit is wandering the same area as you travel...sigh!

Happy Birthday to my fellow Marines. God Bless you Chesty Puller, where ever you are.

hard to believe it's ben 33 years since the Fitzgerald sank. Yet I was not born then but I have had a big interest in freighters since I was about 3 years old. It's too bad they don't hold memorials anywheres close to where I live :( but, it's great that we still remember these people who went down with the boat, honor their memories.

Btw...I like the pictures..too bad boating season has some to an end though around here. But you can get back on that boat soon enough, time flies when your having fun moving all that white stuff haha!!

I clearly remember the day when the Edmund Fitzgerald was lost. Thanks to Gordon Lightfoot for memorializing the event in song.

Hi
I was checking out last Saturday's posting, and read EddyFitz's reminisces about sailing on the Edmund Fitzgerald, including during the storm that sank the Carl D. Bradley.

There were various traffic mishaps here in SE Michigan during the morning commute due to our first snow/sleet on the ground. Every year we have to remember how to drive in it.

Deb, now Ron is going to spend all day looking online at places in Eagle Harbor!

George makes me want to sail looking at that map.

I have a question about George's travels. Since so many trips involve sailing to Canadian harbors, is customs involved? When I go to Canada, I have to show ID and a birth certificate. How does it work when you sail to a small Canadian Harbor?

TO SNOWMAN: I READ YOUR POSTING ON YESTERDAYS CAM NOTES WITH TODAYS DATE.
I WAS 17 YEARS OLD WHEN MY BROTHER DIED. I WAS TURNING 18 A MONTH AFTER HE DIED AND HE ALWAYS SAID THAT WHEN HE CAME HOME FROM KOREA, HE WAS GOING TO TAKE ME OUT FOR MY BIRTHDAY.

I ALSO LOST MY YOUNGEST BROTHER IN 2005. HE WAS NOT IN THE SERVICE AT THE TIME, BUT HE JUST TURNED 48 YRS. OLD. NO MATTER HOW LONG AGO AND UNDER THE CIRCUMSTANCES- YOU WILL ALWAYS MISS THEM.

By George Hite (Ghite) on Monday, November 10, 2008 - 03:43 pm:

Hi all,
Thanks for your nice comments about my web site, Eagle harbor, my writing and my sailing. All are my joys.

And yes, Kay, I felt your spirit. The realization that there are many kindred souls aboard Peregrine as I sail the lake is what keeps me sane and safe.

Steve, I do remember our encounter and your battle with the bugs. I admired your guts in sailing that 19 footer in Isle Royale waters.

And Richard, the Canadians have a wonderfully easy system for US boaters to cruise in their Lake Superior waters and visit their Superior ports. It's an annual pass, called the Remote Area Access Permit, obtainable through Canadian Immigration's web site. With the permit, no further clearing with Canadian officials is required. Canadian boaters have a lot more hassle dealing with our customs organization.
