When you're heading UP to check out the leaves and the colors, it's always a welcome sign to arrive in Mackinaw City, since you know that a quick jaunt over the Big Mac, a payment of the Bridge Toll and you are here. Doug Grusser gives us a pictorial of the event I just described, with a bonus shot of the colors on the trees that greet you once you've completed your journey and are driving to whatever U.P. destination you choose. It's always a treat to arrive UP North, but this time of year, the fall color is an additional reward.

WE USE TO GET TO THE U.P. ABOUT (4) TIMES A YEAR AND NO MATTER THE TIME OF DAY OR NIGHT OR THE TIME OF YEAR, AS SOON AS WE CROSSED THE BRIDGE TO THE U.P. WE ALWAYS PULLED OVER TO THE REST STOP TO GET OUT OF THE TRUCK AND JUST STAND THERE AND BREATHE IN THE AIR. IT WAS SUCH A DIFFERENCE AND THAT YOU ALWAYS KNEW YOU WERE IN THE U.P.....;0)

How appropriate that I should be greeted with photos of the gateway to the U.P., seeing as how I'll be passing through there in about 35 1/2 hours. (but who's counting?)
I hope the colors are holding up in the Ironwood to Lake Michigamme corridor!

Takes me back to this past summer when we were there. I have that same 3rd picture but I bet the cars are different. The colors are really spectacular. We're still real green around here.

The shot of the bridge is from the UP side; I can see the windmill in Mackinaw City on the far side.

On a different subject, I just turned the calendar in my office to October, and the picture is a shot of fall color in the Keweenaw: US 41 in a tunnel of trees.

You sure know how to entice us LPr's Mary. I can't get UP there until after Oct. 15th (tax return deadline). I hope that there will be some color left.

I have been away from pasty.com for a few weeks after knee replacement surgery, but am finally able to totter up the stairs to my computer. I would like to add a name to yesterday's list: my father James Carson who died 10 years ago yesterday of lung cancer. There isn't a day goes by I dont miss him!

Some parts of the U.P. are at peak if not they will be by this weekend. Having this cold spell and the rain has helped it along! Just BEAUTIFUL!

We should be crossing the bridge right around sundown today, on a trip downstate. The return is planned for Sunday, so I'm sure it will be colorful both ways.

i would love to get a collection going of the best places to see the fall colors in the upper peninsula. i'd like to make a bullet list for some friends who will be visiting this week.

what are some suggestions outside of the obvious ones? i don't know the southern U.P. as well...

Therese: Glad to know your knee replacement surgery went well, as did mine June 17. One more to go next June!

We spent the weekend on Mackinac Island at Mission Point a few weeks ago. My husband was at a conference all Saturday, so I enjoyed my choice of four restaurants at the hotel. Most of all I enjoyed the time I spent reading next to the window in my room. We had a close-up view of the freighters going by and the gardens below.

I wanted to put a memorial on yesterday's site for my nephew but I wasn't able to log in.
Anyway, my nephew, Rob Johnson, from Kearsarge, passed away unexpectedly on September 6. It was quite a shock; we miss him terribly. He'll always be remembered. He was a great guy!

Does anyone know of a man named Gary Burso? He was confined to a wheel chair and took classes at Suomi while I was there back in 69 to 71. He was from Lake Linden. It was my job to move him between classes up and down stairs and between buildings. He was a great guy I'd like to talk to him again...

I'm from Lake Linden and graduated high school in 1970. I've never heard of this guy. Sorry.

I am glad for the pasty cam with the fall colors this year. I used to get to Copper Harbor twice a year for the past ten years but it isn't in the cards this year and I know it's probably peak color right now. A few Neil Harri photos would be welcome about now of the retina-burning colors from above.
