How many swans floated across the Pasty Cam on this day in 2003?

By Smfwlk (Trollperson) on Thursday, September 11, 2008 - 07:16 am:

Three. Mornin'
First Post

By Kenty (Dashamo) on Thursday, September 11, 2008 - 07:21 am:

What does the third swan have around it's neck?

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Thursday, September 11, 2008 - 07:41 am:

Thoughts and prayers go out today for those whose lives were forever changed on this day seven years ago, 9-11-01. God Bless America!

By John W Anderson (Wd8rth) on Thursday, September 11, 2008 - 08:45 am:

The collar around the neck is a tracking number. On smaller birds they put it in a leg, I think with the swans they put it on the neck so they can read the number without recapturing the bird.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Thursday, September 11, 2008 - 08:51 am:

That picture of downtown Houghton makes you realize how much is now gone. That was one big building next to the Library.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, September 11, 2008 - 08:55 am:

Janie T...I think those prayers go out to each and every one of us...I expect there isn't one person who has not been affected by that horrible day, whether they were there or lost a loved one or were just watching it unfold on television. God save us humans from each other....

By Tom (Tom) on Thursday, September 11, 2008 - 09:24 am:

Ike is going to hit the Texas coast south of Houston. Just got a call from our son who lives in Lake Jackson, TX, on their way north of Houston to wait out the storm. Boarded up windows of the house and left 2:00 instead of waiting for the 8:00 am evacuation order. Looks like a Cat 3 storm just now. I like the northern storms much better.

By Sean Finnegan (Sean) on Thursday, September 11, 2008 - 10:05 am:

Remember, fly our flag at half staff today.

By J.M. Karjala (Askmrunix) on Thursday, September 11, 2008 - 10:13 am:

Mornin' Uncle T. Personally, I prefer no storms at all, Northern, Southern, or anywhere in between. I've had enough close brushes with mom nature at her most furious (Xenia, OH in '74 for example) to last a lifetime.

By FJL (Langoman) on Thursday, September 11, 2008 - 10:50 am:

And since that terrible attack IN our country seven years ago today, how many more were there??? Now what does that tell you.............

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, September 11, 2008 - 12:20 pm:

I guess I dont need to mention that it is a madhouse around here at the gas stations and grocery stores!! Lucky for me, I got all that stuff yesterday when there wasn't 2 hrs lines in Kroger ;-)

Right now, it would appear that Ike will make landfall near Freeport which is the worst possible place for us on the NW side of Houston because that puts the eye and eyewall over our house, potentially. I will say that preparing for a hurricane is much like preparing for a major winter storm or a Witch on Lake Superior. The only difference is that there aren't 7 million people in the Keweenaw trying to do the same thing.

At the moment, the weather is beautiful; sunny, a nice breeze but VERY humid. I guess this is the proverbial "calm before the storm" they talk about. By tomorrow night, I believe it will anything but calm around here..........

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Thursday, September 11, 2008 - 12:49 pm:

FJL (Langoman) -

It tells me we finally had someone in charge who sent the message that America would not stand for attacks on her own soil or elsewhere (the Cole, US Embassies, US barracks.......)

God bless our troops who are protecting America every day.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Thursday, September 11, 2008 - 01:39 pm:

Good luck Cap'n Paul...as you and Dr Nat batten down the hatches.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Thursday, September 11, 2008 - 04:13 pm:

Capt...looks like all those years planning for Michigan winter storms paid off. At least you’re ahead of the game in that respect.

Good luck with this one. Maybe a nice bottle of scotch and some divine cactus is called for while your waiting this one out.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, September 11, 2008 - 04:20 pm:

Bread, milk and toilet paper, the three essentials to get through a storm. OK, and maybe some anti-freeze, chilled. Good luck and stay safe Capt. Paul and Dr. Nat!
Mr. Deb

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Thursday, September 11, 2008 - 07:11 pm:

I totally agree with you Langoman! Thank God for America and our present President!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, September 11, 2008 - 07:29 pm:

WOW, the 2001 picture was spectacular and I loved the last one as well. The one of the South American docked in Houghton brought back memories. Thanks for a great slide show once again.

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Thursday, September 11, 2008 - 09:40 pm:

Thanks Deb, My husband Rob took the 2001 photo.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Thursday, September 11, 2008 - 09:52 pm:

Good luck Cap'n Paul and Dr. Nat. I have a friend, former Winter Texan, from Muskegan who's in Rockport now. She email me the other night that she and 3 friends were going to evacuate Rockport today, Thursday. She said to pray that there isn't much damage as they can't get insurance to help. She lives in a park model unit. It's less than a mile across flats from the shore! I anxious for her! Just lost her husband Easter Sunday.

By Richard Wieber (Dickingrayling) on Thursday, September 11, 2008 - 10:05 pm:

The picture of the South American appears to have been before WW2. I can't remember what stores were in the large building down from the Library, but the next one down was Webber's plumbing shop. My dad's building was just west of that, next to the depot.

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Thursday, September 11, 2008 - 10:09 pm:

For all the boat nerds here:

Today, PM downbound off Marine City!

Let's pray for the innocent lives that were lost on that terrible day and those who led the attack (be brought to justice).

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, September 12, 2008 - 07:10 am:

That was a spectacular shot, Grace. How lucky of him just to be there to see it, much less capture it in a photo.
