Good Morning everyone. Happy Labor Day. 67 and sunny here in Houghton. We had 91 degrees at our house yesterday, was indoors with A/C all day.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, September 1, 2008 - 09:01 am:

Good morning!

I've been sitting here reading that statement by Mary, and it seems that only 9 already HAVE artificial turf. And it doesn't say that all 12 are actually getting artificial turf in her statement. Mary, maybe you could help. Geez, you guys confuse us so early in the morning, lol.

Happy Labor Day everybody!

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Monday, September 1, 2008 - 09:50 am:

Good Labor Day morning everyone!

As for the controversial "Early Bird question" answer today, I gathered the information for my notes from the Michigan Tech webpage article, titled:
Sherman Field Turf Project Underway.
The actual line from the article says:

"Tech will be the ninth of the 12 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schools with artificial turf. Two others (Ashland and Hillsdale) have a playing surface from ProGrass.

Perhaps in the rewording of that statement, to allow for the change that it has been completed now, has caused the confusion. I left out the word "the", after "of" and before "twelve". Does this clear anything up or muddy the waters even more? :->
"Tech is the ninth of (THE) twelve Great Lake Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schools with artificial turf installed on their playing fields."

So then, 12 is the correct answer? I'm sorry, it's still a little early and I've only had a piece of cake this morning. LOL

There was a fire in Ontonagon on Sunday morning. I can't find more on the internet right now. But here is the link I did find. Wow! Stubbs Bar Museum was saved. That place is a local icon. http://wluctv6.com/news/news_story.aspx?id=183410

Maybe Z-Man will check in with photos if he was in town this weekend.

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Monday, September 1, 2008 - 12:17 pm:

actually, only 9 have artificial turf, and it says nothing whether the other 3 are getting it or not....
it does say two others and now Tech , have the PROGRASS turf.

so the question and the perceived answer is faulty.

By Kristi Kattelus (Kristk) on Monday, September 1, 2008 - 01:51 pm:

Thanks for the link to the Ontonagon fire... The pics were amazing. The article was short but helpful. I remember when the chip pile at the pulp mill burned in the late 70's and that was awesome, but this changes so much of the main street.

By RCW (Rcw) on Monday, September 1, 2008 - 02:07 pm:

That was my thought too Deb!!!!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, September 1, 2008 - 02:35 pm:

I say you're right with the answer of 9 RCW, because cousin Dave looked it up and there are only 9 with no mention of any others getting it. Geez, you can tell it's Monday even though it doesn't feel like it with no work. LOL

Good grief people, it's only a token award; nothing to get all in a tizzie over. ;-)

All in good fun, Capt Paul. All in good fun!

While paddling the Middle Branch of the Ontoagon River this weekend between Burned Dam and the Interior Bridge I noticed a curious sign posted atop a tall sand bank. The sign is a lovingly done wood burning that includes the words "Dedicated to Jessica "n" Ziffle". Artwork on the sign leads me to believe a death may have occured there or that the sand bank was a deceased person's favorite place. Can anyone share info on what the story of this unusual sign might be?

Thank you,
Dan

Ontonagan...we used to go to the Labor Day parade there every year..then have a picnic near the Firesteel River. There used to be a picnic table or two there.

Here's a blurb form the Ontonagon school web site about the fire and parade ... mighty cool.

The buildings on River Street between Hegg's Plummery and the (new) Rogers Insurance building (former Mazurek's Clothing) burned to the ground starting at 5:00 am 8-31-08. No injuries and Camp 1 on the opposing corner was also gutted after being showered with sparks. AT least 7 fire departments responded. In true Ontonagon spirit, the annual Labor Day Parade went off without a hitch but with a slightly changed route. Thank you to all the volunteers who braved the 90 degree heat to knock this fire out - with a NW wind it could have been much worse!

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Monday, September 1, 2008 - 03:35 pm:

not cool about the fire, but cool they have the spirit there to continue on with the festivities, with all the trauma surrounding such an event.

By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Monday, September 1, 2008 - 04:59 pm:

Currently 92 degrees here in Mohawk; has to be a record for Sept. 1st.

Thank you Z-Man, for the aftermath picture. Puts it into perspective for those of us who haven't been there in a while.

This Ontonagon fire reminds me too much of my years at "Da Tech", during which there were a significant number of mid-winter fires in both Houghton and Hancock that virtually devastated entire blocks, in spite of the valiant, dedicated, herculean efforts of many local fire departments, most of which were volunteers.

Fire fighting in the UP seemed so shockingly futile in sub-freezing winter conditions even that day and age (circa 1958-1964).

Anyone remember the Kerridge Theater fire in Hancock in 1959?

From the MTU Archives and Copper Country Historical Collections
(Michigan's Copper Country in Photographs):

1. Kerridge Theater - before (scroll down to "Other Images in This Collection" for another view)

2. Kerridge Theater - after

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Monday, September 1, 2008 - 10:12 pm:

In the twenties and thirties the Kerridge theater was home to many concerts. My mom used to talk about sitting outside of the theater and listening to Sousa and his band doing a concert there. My granmother was inside, but couldn't afford to pay for the kids to attend. The Copper Country at one time was the center of sophistication in Michigan.
