The 19th annual Parade of Nations took place this past Saturday, with a parade that started at the Elementary School in Hancock, crossed the Portage Lift Bridge and headed down Sheldon Ave. in downtown Houghton. That's where Judy Byykkonen was on hand to capture a couple of photos of the parade entries to share with us. After the parade, she headed to the Dee Stadium to try the variety of foods from different countries and also enjoy the entertainment on hand. She said there were many colorful outfits to represent different countries, along with the music and dance from groups such as the Native American family, Fast Horses, which happened to be Judy's favorite. Too bad she didn't have a video camera to record a short clip of the entertainment for us too. :->

When I lived in Houghton back in 1993, I saw the 'Parade of Nations' and it was spectacular. The chinese dragons were beautiful. I also went down to Dee Stadium for the rest of it.

We missed all that, soccer all day. But had to head to Houghton and saw the parade lined up on the bridge, not the same but we got to see the costumes.

We found a 5 to 6 inch preying mantis on our front door. He was actually climbing on the brick. We got the broom and put him in the tree. I DO NOT like bugs, but it was kind of cool to watch it crawl around on the broom. Had the strangest look on its face. It is still out there in the tree. We had snails crawling up the door one time. All kind of critters.

mickill mouse (Ram4):
"a … preying mantis"

Although it certainly does a lot of "preyng" (upon prey), it really is a (click) → Praying Mantis.
See also: European mantis. Quoted here in part [Emphasis is mine. -FRN]:

Quote:

"One of several different insects for which a name used within Europe to refer to only a single insect species (in this case, "praying mantis") has become adopted throughout the globe to refer to the larger group of insects to which that one species belongs. Often mistakenly spelled preying mantis … they are in fact named for the typical "prayer-like" stance." [with their forelegs folded is if in prayer. -FRN]
