Good morning...1946?

Once again I want to thank PastyCam for making it possible for me to try to reach family members in the Upper Peninsula. I am happy to say I was able to reach some.

I would like to tell you a little about Des. Des is a moniker for Donald Eric Stoneson. He was a man that every mother wishes their daughter would meet and marry If Des had the world to give Kathina, he would have. At one time they were very rich, but lost all their homes and money and trust funds to a crooked attorney that took it all away. ( the Savings and Loan "Keating Five" affair where Senator McCain was involved) one of the biggest scandalous affairs to hit our country where thousands of people lost there life's savings in the collapse of the Saving and Loan Institutions across America.

They fought in court for 8-9 years to try to get some of it back to no avail. Yet through all this they clung unto each other tighter than ever and made their love even that much stronger. Des was a man that even though he came from a very influential, very rich family, he was not to proud to take menial work to provide for his wife if that was all he could get. His families influence let them into the Reagan White House. His father was a Council Ambassador to Iceland. He was a direct decendent to Leif Ericson

I was very proud of Des. He never put on airs as being better than anyone else, he just wanted to make his wife happy in any way that he could. Perhaps I understood them more than the rest of the family as they (Kay and Des) were very private people, they enjoyed being alone, and not always being bothered by family.

So yes, it is very hard loosing Des. We as parents are supposed to go before our children do, and it is the hardest thing to lose one of your children, and Des was one of my children.
Des lost his father several years ago, and his mother last year. He lost his only brother last year to cancer.

Again, I would like to thank all of you for being so gracious at this time of our grief. Your concern leaves me at a loss for words. Thank you. Beverly

Bev, may the pain of losing your son-in-law be washed away in a sea of joyful memories of his life.

The S&L crisis was a tragic time for many who lost their savings, or were caught in the political crossfire. While we barely recall the three names of the Keating Five whose political careers ended with their conviction, we do remember the two whose names were cleared of all charges and completely exonerated: Senator John Glenn and Senator John McCain.

Bev, that was so heartwarming! I hope that Kay will cling to you in her time of need. Thoughts and prayers are still with you both, as well as the rest of your family.

Good morning all! It's a crisp morning out there again this morning. I'm afraid autumn is coming a little early this year.

Morning! We reached a low last nite of 47*. Today is the first day of school for the Cedar Rapids, Ia. school district.

Bev thank you for sharing somethings about Des' life. Your daughter was fortunate to find real love. You were fortunate to have a son in law as wonderful as he was.

good luck Bev getting over this horrible tragedy. It's very tough. But "life goes on"

At the Houghton Co.airport friday's temp.was a record 84 high and Monday am was a record low 38.

Bev, this is the first I've heard of your son in law's death. Your thoughts of him were heart warming & I know he meant alot to you & your family. My heart goes out to you & your daughter & family. You have a wonderful family & with each other & God's help you'll be able to get through this. He'll always with you im wonderful loving memories.

Being that I was corrected on the "Keating Five" scandle let me tell you how I read it:

"After a lengthy investigation, the Senate Ethics Committee determined in 1991 that Alan Cranston, Dennis DeConcini, and Donald Riegle had substantially and improperly interfered with the FHLBB in its investigation of Lincoln Savings. Senators John Glenn and John McCain were cleared of having acted improperly but were criticized for having exercised "poor judgment"."

McCain made a critical error in judgement by calling Keating a constituant and had every right to ask for help from the other Senators. Keating was no ordinary constituant. He was funding McCain's campaign by the thousands of dollars every year.

The article goes on to say how Senator McCain was a close friend of Charles Keating, jetting around the country with Keating, vacationing at Keatings opulent Bahamas retreat at Cat Cay with wife and family at Keating's expense. He did not pay for some of these trips until years later when he found out that Keating was in trouble.

And speaking of McCain's wife Cindy, she and father and Keating went into a shopping center deal one year before McCain met with the bank regulators.

Was he a Reluctant participant or a "wimp"? With all his wife's money you wonder. For being so close to Keating, I believe he knows a lot more than he lets on.

Does anyone have any pictures of Little Traverse to put on this site? I was up north last week and saw Lake Superior from Baraga, Eagle River, Eagle Harbor, Big Traverse, and Little Traverse. I missed taking a picture of the full moon coming up at Little Traverse.

Regarding the Keating Savings & Loan scandal, it was known to prudent investors in the tri-state area of Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky that Keating was not to be trusted, hence such investors did not trust him with their money and had nothing to do with his schemes.

Kinda hard to do that, FJL, when the Google-supplied ad is one for McCain.
