Jeff Kalember and his son recently made a trek along the trails at Pictured Rocks in the Munising area. Just enjoying the Father/Son experience of hiking and camping along the way would have been enough in itself, but these two made it even better with delicious looking meals to keep up their strength. No dried food packs for this pair of hikers, it was a full breakfast with eggs, crackers meat and cheese for lunch and fresh picked blueberries topping their pancakes at dinner. Of course they did more than eat on their adventure, they also took time to enjoy Lake Superior's beauty along the sandy shores.

I love camping and Picture Rocks next year that would be a great place to set up camp.
By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 - 07:52 am:
My wife and I along with our three children camped in the UP for at least 15 years. We had a 10x16 tent and a 14' fishing boat we used to carry our camping equipment. I can't think of a better place for camping. Our boy scout troop went to Isle Royale twice. These are experiences my family will never forget. I can almost smell breakfast now. I love to check pasty cam every morning. Thanks for bringing back so many memories. What a wonderful web site!

The views from the hiking trails in the pictured rocks are amazing. From the top of the cliffs is something I will never forget. Take the 10 mile loop, its worth it.

Yes, Vollwerths. Part of the North Beach diet if you remember.
By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 - 11:58 am:
I thought the North Shore diet consisted of moose, poutine, and LaBatts??
By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 - 01:01 pm:
Sounds like the Canadian north shore. I wasn't sure what poutine was so I looked it up.
The jury is still out on that one.
By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 - 02:06 pm:
What jury????
There is nothing like watching "Hockey Night in Canada" with a hot gooey plate of poutine, your favorite canadian adult beverage, and Don Cherry on a Saturday night; what could be better!?!?!

Today's cam notes are way too much about food. I want all the food that is mentioned and I want it on that beach. I would even try some poutine. I've had cheese curds warmed in the microwave all by themselves and that was very good. Could someone deliver some poutine, si vous plais?

Could someone deliver some poutine, si vous plais?" s’il vous plaît?
By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 - 04:38 pm:
What really cracked me up is that this appears to be a very popular dish at fast-food restaurants in Canada.
"Hi...I'd like a double quarter-pounder with cheese, an order of poutine and oh-yes, hold the heart attack."

hey Warren..congrats that you managed to camp for 15 years. Man, that must have been one heck of a journey. Winters must have been pretty tough.

Those blueberries look good enough to eat, and the lake looks like a good place to do just that.
By Jeff Kalember (Jeffkal) on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 - 07:06 pm:
this father son bonding trip was the highlight of my entire summer ! if anyone ever has the chance to hike the 43 mile lakeshore from Munising to Grand Marais, do it. I personally think it is the highlight of Michigan sights.
By Jeff Kalember (Jeffkal) on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 - 07:10 pm:
and yes, you're right mary, we don't skimp on backpacking food !! Pasta with shrimp and crab one night, chicken in a butter/onion sauce one night, and those deliceious blueberry pancakes the last night !! mmmmmmmm good.

Thanx Fnash...I looked up 'please' on Babelfish and it only said 'svp'...so I had to improvise on the spelling. I'm glad you got my gist. What time will the poutine be here?
By John D. (Hansvonuper) on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 - 09:18 pm:
Now why don't we have such a wonderful dish as poutine down here? Boy, I miss Pictured Rocks. Thanks for the wonderful pictures that stirred up wonderful memories.

Nothing like a good ole bush pasty when camping as well. All of the ingredients of the pasty, folded in tin foil with a big ole stick of butter and yum.

Capt.Paul you're right, the only thing that would make that better is to be at High Rock Bay, the 4x4 shining in the moon light, my dog, a ring of Sauna Makara, and Waylon Jennings playing on the CD player, beverages, or what ever, and a careful dip in the Gitch!

One more thing, Snowman sittin next to me reciting one of his award wining poems!

You got it Uncle Chuck!
For Uncle Chuck;
Sittin' by the fire sippin' on a beer, Hearin' the snorts and rustle of deer. Watchin' the flames flickerin' away, While Northern Lights put on a big display. Good friends sharing those simple ways, What a great ending for those perfect days.
PERFECT! WAY TO GO SNOWMAN!
