Paul Roberts has been one of our regular Pasty Camist's for awhile now, always supplying us with interesting shots. He recently packed up all his belongings to head in a new direction (Colorado, where his brother lives) and he sent in this photo of his car packed full, as he was getting ready to leave. Paul always makes me smile with his sense of humor and he did so again with the note he sent along with the photos: "So I got all packed up and realized I needed to get my fishing pole into the car. Could've taken it apart, but then I would've had to deal with the hook, line etc. and I didn't have the time, patience, or room for that so I grabbed the duct tape."

Thus was born the "Yooper Car Top Carrier". I sure hope Paul didn't test the strength of that duct tape, since I've always heard it referred to as "hundred mile an hour tape". :->

I'd just like to take this opportunity to wish Paul luck in his new town and let him know he will be missed around here.

On a side note, take a look back at the top photo, in the upper left corner you can just see the band shell that occupies the back corner of Daniell Park in Laurium, near Laurium Manor Inn. During the summer months, there's a concert held there every Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. There's still time to catch the last one of the season, coming up this Thursday. You can check out the details here: Daniell Park Concerts.

Ha! Today's shot brings back memories! Each August as we'd head back the NMU, i'd drive over to my dorm mate's house with boxes of gear. But the car would already be jammed full - with no room for my stuff! One year a brother & cousin followed us north with all the 'leftovers' which wouldn't fit.

Have a safe trip Paul, and i hope you enjoy your new home!

Good luck, Paul.

You will have a safe trip Paul....you're in an Oldsmobile!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 - 07:48 am:

Good luck, Paul. You gave me a chuckle with the fishing pole.

Funny photos...is that a quick release carrier in case you pass by a pond on the way?

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 - 07:59 am:

Also...I love the matching set of luggage.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 - 08:12 am:

I hope it doesn't rain on his luggage.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 - 08:30 am:

God speed, Paul! Hang onto that Oldsmobile, they don't make 'em anymore.

By David S. (Yooperdfs) on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 - 09:32 am:

Looks like Paul better use some duct tape to keep that trunk down, also. When in doubt, improvise.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 - 10:41 am:

Geez I never thought of duct tape when I was bracing my lonely tomato plant from the wind on my deck. I used heavy-duty shipping tape. What was I thinking? :o>)

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 - 10:46 am:

Good Luck, Paul. We also had to get the fishing pole in on our first trip in the move up here, like there was any chance I was taking Taylor fishing in November but he had to have it!!

Think we'll check out the concert Thursday since we haven't yet, its a nice walk over there.

& Pez Dog, I don't think they removed that stamp sand just covered it with soil that would grow grass. I recommend contacting the EPA to see what they can do in other areas but they have their hands full with the Quincy Smelter right now.

It's always great to see my pictures on the pasty cam. A couple notes about this car. It had 182000 miles on it. I actually had gorrila tape over the seal between the windshiel and roof to avoid leaking. Two of the four doors didnt work. (not the drivers door. The only important one!) Plus just before I left the flywheel started making a serious racket. At that point it was get to Kalamazoo and that was it. I flew out of Detroit. It would've been several hundred dollars to fix the flywheel. Not really worth it. Plus I'm in an area with a good transit system so I don't have to worry about driving...much. I got $200 for it. It's the first car I've driven (I've had three over the last four years...all beaters) I actually was nervous to drive. It was acting its age. I do wish I couldve kept it. I blew two tires on it so when I got rid of it it had 4 tires with less then 3k miles on them. THAT killed me. Oh well. I appreciate the comments and who knows, you may see a picture of mine on here occasssionaly. The fishing pole did make it to its destination. Thanks again!

OK, that Oldsmobile of Paul's got me remembering that I said I would post a picture of me channeling Marilyn Monroe on my profile; check it out (that was a "couple" of years ago). Maybe next year, if I can fit in that dress once again, I can make an appearance at the Cruise. Wouldn't that be fun??!!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 - 03:54 pm:

Paul is leaving the Copper Country in his Merry Oldsmobile!!

The conversation about Torch Lake was moved to the What'sUP page.

Hey Cindy, is that the Fonz you are dancing with? You look like quite a team.

Welcome to Colorado Paul! Love the Yooper Roof Rack. A couple of years ago, I tied a 14' pole vault pole to the roof of my jeep and drove from Ontonagon to Denver (Parker actually).

By Walter P McNew (Waltermcnew) on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 - 08:24 pm:

nice car really

By Cecil Crider (Critte2) on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 - 09:55 pm:

Paul: Be careful with that tape. If you leave it on the painted surface too long and drive in hot weather you may remove some paint when you remove the tape. I put some tape on a car and when I removed that tape paint was removed also. Good luck. Critter2

What a coincidence! Read this post and smiled then read your comment Paul and I really laughed. Those that know me already know why I say this. Paul your situation here is similiar to what we experienced this summer going to the Keweenaw after 20 some years absence. We were in a serious accident back in the spring with our big Crown Victoria. It was totaled. Decided to use my late mother-in- laws Pontiac we inherited, about same vintage and the same size as yours pictured and we didn't realize the size difference to the old Crown Vic. We looked almost just as your Olds packed liked that plus our 2 dogs! I did fit my fish pole in the not too big trunk! Though we've been looking for a newer bigger car we considered I had just put a new rebuilt engine in it for the mother-in-law shortly before she died so we thought why not get some use of it! Off we went UP bound!
The heater core went and misted up the windshield, the exhaust pipe donut blew out, the carb was flooding, the dash gauges were blinking off & on, the headliner started to fall down, one motor mount went, but we made it all the way to the top of Brockway Mountain, the tip of the Keweenaw, and back home to St. Clair county!
We did have a nice time though and glad we went!
