E.B. test: Today, what is the name of the highway where a painted center line was first used in the U.P.?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, July 20, 2008 - 10:14 am:

Good morning! It was first called Hwy 15, then dubbed US 41 and now called Hwy 492.

Was I right with the Early Bird question????? Very interesting cameo by the way.

By Jim Haralson (Jhattica) on Sunday, July 20, 2008 - 10:28 am:

The first centerline is credited to Edward Hines in Wayne County, Michigan. Probably on Woodward Avenue because is had a pioneering section of concrete.

Notice the new (recent) rumble strips MDOT has cut in the center painted lines and shoulders of 2 lane roads ? When you drift over into one of those it will jar you back real quick.
Its a new program called WAKE UP

By Jim Haralson (Jhattica) on Sunday, July 20, 2008 - 01:21 pm:

My apologies to DebS (must be from LakeLinden), Hines thought of the idea, but it was first instituted as you say, sorry.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, July 20, 2008 - 01:27 pm:

Yup, that's right, Jim. I'm from LL. I do know a Bob Haralson, or I used to when I was younger.

By Bob Tiura (Bobtiura) on Sunday, July 20, 2008 - 01:59 pm:

The following is quoted from the MDOT website under the News and Information link/National Firsts.

"1. Nation's first mile of concrete highway built by the Wayne County Road Commission (Woodward Avenue between 6 and 7 Mile roads in Detroit) 1909.
2. Nation's first painted centerline (River Road near Trenton, by the Wayne County Road Commission) 1911. (The first state trunkline in the nation to sport a centerline was the Marquette to Negaunee Road - now US 41/M 28 - in 1917.)...".

Can you tell that I'm an MDOT retiree?
