Today's Pasty Cameo led me to old photos of highways in various archives, and here's a couple that caught my attention. Those prices look perhaps like the 40's - though I remember seeing gas for less in the 60's.

The second picture is an added bonus. One of our previous Cameos mentioned about Frank Lloyd Wright building a couple of homes in the U.P., and I was surprised to find this Phillips 66 station (the only gas station built by Frank Lloyd Wright) in Cloquet, Minnesota.

The Center Line cameo goes back even further, to World War I, and some creative thinking by some folks here from the U.P. This place is full of surprises.

Ah, yes...the good old days when a gas tank could be filled up for what we pay for a gallon now. What's that growing in the front of the first picture? It looks like a cholla cactus. Where was it taken?

Good morning, I have a lot of memories of service stations. One is the Phillip's ville station, and the City Service gas station in Ahmeek. At one time my uncles had a hand in them. The Kowalski's and my uncle Fred (Pudgy) Stukel. They would buy car's from down-state and drive them to the U.P.. My Mother would drive the chase car, more than likely the better of all the car's. This was before the bridge was built. I have a lot of memories of these adventures.

That is one of the coolest gas signs I've ever seen. Then again, I've only been around about 20 years...

Socrates Antioho has a brother John that ran a confectionary in Cloquet. The back bar at one of the party stores was identical to the one John had at the Tulip Shop in Cloquet. John's wife Katherine, was from Calumet, I believe was a Geckas

Charlie: don't know about the 60s per-se, but I had a "GULF" station on Harper in St. Clair Shores MI from 1970 to 1972. That was when the "price wars" were at their peak and they were "getting the lead out" of the gasoline at the same time. We were as low as 19 cents per gallon then! I didn't sell much either cause someone else in town was at 18 cents! I lost my shirt on that whole deal! Shortly after, "GULF" pulled out of Michigan leaving its MI dealers high & dry! So also did "TEXACO"!

If my history is correct Frank Lloyd Wright built in the UP at two different times. The first was between 1900-1915ish when he did a number of cottages at the far east end of the UP near Drummond Island. The second was in the 1930's when he did a house in Marquette that is still standing. I even think some of the cottages are still standing. It is interesting to find how many cottages he did along the Lake Michigan shoreline between 1900 -1910. One was for sale just a couple of years ago.

I just learned that the inventor of the Center Line was from my hometown. How exciting!

I remember seeing long sticks at the corners of all the bridges along the roads up there too. My only thought was so you could see the things in the winter?

The summer of 1970 I bought a lot of that 18 cent gas, around the Pontiac area where I had a summer job, and on a trip to the Copper Country. Of course, gas was in the mid-20 cent range in the U.P., but if I recall correctly, the highest we saw it on that trip was 32 cents!

I like the picture of the Phillips 66 station. My favorite brand of gasoline. Not many left, although I did see 1 on US-2 between Manistique and Escanaba in 2007.
