Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy, recently posted a note saying he needed a Medora fix. Here on the Pasty Cam, we aim to please, so after a search of the Pasty Gallery Photo Albums, I came up with these three photos to hold him over until he gets UP here for a visit in person. :->

Lake Medora is located along US 41 as you travel to or from Copper Harbor and covers 695 acres of Keweenaw County. It's beautifully captured in the first photo by Brita Haapala with the sun setting, the waters calm and a kayaker enjoying the beauty. Look closely at the photo, just to the left of the setting sun and you can see the little island where "Uncle Chuck" says he and his cousins camped out when they were kids. It truly doesn't get much better than this!

The other two photos were submitted by Michael Keranen, one showing off the lake in the daylight hours, as some folks get ready to stir up the waters with summer fun. With the other shot depicting the peaceful side of this beautiful inland lake here UP North. It's easy to see why this body of water has the lure it does that keeps people coming back to her shores.

Great summertime pictures today. Mungo Jerry's hit "In The Summertime" comes to mind.

I always loved that song...what a good beat.

If her daddy's rich, take her out for a meal,
If her daddy's poor, just do what you feel....

1860 maps labeled this body of water "MOSQUITO LAKE".
Its proximity to the later Medora Location probably gave rise to the present-day name, but what what hapened to the mosquito's?

I will never get tired of looking at that first photo. Beautiful!

Ms. Mary, They don't come much nicer then you! Thanks for the picture's:) I set the top one as my background. We all learned to water ski on Medora when we were kids as well. After I win the lotto, maybe I'll put that cabin on Medora instead of L.S. either one would be fine with me. Looking forward to meeting you when I come U.P. the week of the 28th. I hope Joan is wheeling around just fine?

Kindest Regards,
UC

In the 1940s and 1950s my wife and I spent a lot of time fishing at Lake Medora. We would get a boat from Al De Marois boat livery. We would fish for whitefish, casting with a fly rod with a dry fly at dusk. That is when the fish were feeding on the May Fly hatch, mostly in June. I don't think there are any more whitefish in the lake. Some say it was the only species of it.s kind in this area. They were mostly about 10 to 12 inches and very good eaters. We also caught Rainbow Trout by trolling and perch with worms. The walleye were planted later. Lake Medora was a great lake for fishing and camping. Sometimes we would camp out on one of the islands.

What I'd give to spend the day there.

I also learned how to water ski on Medora. It is one of my favorite places in the Keweenaw!

I also remember when Lake Medora was called Mosquito Lake. In the 50's I would go there with family for an afternoon of playing in the water and having a good time. There was a turnoff from the highway that you could park your car and take a trail to the lake. If I recall correctly, we were usually the only ones there.
