It's well worth your time to head into the town of L'Anse and check out their Waterfront Park, like Katie Tormala recently did. This beautiful park is situated near the marina, so it adds to the nautical theme you'll find there, like the anchor in Katie's first picture. I have no clue what boat this came from, but I can tell you it's a pretty good size one to have an anchor that large. The flagpole is a marine type also, with the double masts to fly another two flags underneath the American flag. Below the flagpole you can see the sign depicting the history of the L'Anse Waterfront, along with several photos dating from 1896 to the 1960's. There are plenty of benches there to sit down and rest for a while, as you enjoy the view out on the lake and also along the shoreline, like in Katie's last photo. Looks like a good place to unwind and relax. Isn't that what summer is supposed to be about?

When I make the drive to the Copper Country I await the turn at L'Anse, which I call a "Decompression" point, because it means I have just arrived into my favorite section of the U.P.

I have never driven down to the waterfront in L'Anse. I must remedy that. I have gone over there from that side of the Portage Entry by boat, but it wasn't to L'Anse. It was to a beautiful sandy beach. Can't remember where it was at the moment. Can't say I liked being out on that lake quite that far. I like to stick to the shoreline. You just never know with Mother Superior.

I want to sit on that lone rock with my feet in the water, even though I know it would be colder than a....well, you know the rest. I can just hear the water on those rocks....aaaahhhhh...take me there.

Every time I drive to Calumet, L'Anse seems to be the entry point of the U.P. That's where the Big Lake comes into view and settles the soul. Many times this is where the weather turns from hot to warm or warm to cool. Love it.

What boat donated the anchor?

Mary says: I don't have the answer for you on that one Ryan. I'm hoping someone from the L'Anse/Baraga area will know and post a reply to your query. :->
