Just last week, we featured some shots of a wild Lake Superior along the shores of Isle Royale. This week we head back to the Island to view something else that's wild… the critters you happen upon if you're lucky (quiet helps too!).

Kevin Henriksen must have been both, during his recent trip across the Big Lake to one of the least visited National Parks in the U.S. As he was able to capture two of the wild animals the Island is famous for, the fox and the moose. Kevin did so without having to disturb the wildlife since he has quite a telephoto range with his camera, making it look like he was up close and personal with this first fella. I wonder if while he was zooming in on him, he was thinking, "Don't shoot until you see the whites of his eyes". That would explain why he ended up right in his face, since this fox doesn't have any white in it's eyes.

Then there's the pictures of the moose and her calf, prized photos indeed. It's special to get a picture of a moose, but to snap one with her baby is the crème de la crème in wildlife photography!

I like that fox's hair color. I wonder if Clairol has Isle Royale Foxy Red?

Nice pictures but I'm curious about the statement "largest island in the largest lake". Everything north of Portage Lake is an island and I would say that's bigger than Isle Royale. (Maybe I'm just a nitpicker)

Sure the Keweenaw is an island, but it's man made!

A visit to the largest island in the largest Great Lake

Don't forget, however, that there are five Great Lakes, and while Superior is the largest of the lakes, it does not contain the largest island in the Great Lakes. That distinction goes to Manitoulin Island in Lake Huron, almost five times larger than Isle Royale. In fact, Manitoulin is the largest lake island in the world. The Keweenaw is not a natural island and does not count as an island because it was manmade with the opening of the Portage Canal.

Although I already know I'm going to be over-ruled because Isle Royale is the largest island in the largest great lake......... details, details ;-)

Mary says: Now, now, Capt. Paul, you said it yourself in your last paragraph, Isle Royale IS the largerst island IN the largest Great Lake and that's exactly what I was saying...is there an echo in the Pastycam today? ;-)

Great photos Kevin! How lucky you were not only to be visiting Isle Royale but that you had the opportunity to view these animals.

The photos of the fox are great but I am partial to the moose. WHAT MAJESTIC CREATURES THEY ARE.....Would loved to have been in your shoes.

Last fall our niece was taking her daily walk on Blueberry Ridge (between Marquette & Gwinn)& a mountain lion (cougar) ran across her path in front of her. She notified the DNR & police & they put her off & there was nothing reported to the public about it. The DNR has refused to admit for years that they exist up here but last week I saw in the paper where they finally admitted to the cats being in the UP. My husband's friend set up a bait pile with a remote camera & was able to photograph one at the the bait a few months ago. I'm glad that people are now aware that the cats or cougars are here & can be more aware while walking in the woods. They're also apt to attack from behind & go for one's throat. Scary huh!!!! Just giving you a heads up on this.

I saw two mountain lions several years ago on one of the Forest Highways south of my dad's on the way to Iron River from Mass City. It was winter and they walked across the road in front of me. I had to look twice...I said to myself..."that looks like the tail of cat"...and when I looked again I saw that they were, in fact, cats. How cool!

I also got to see a fox close up one day when I was just sitting on the road (not much to do in the UP) near home. A fox came out of the woods and we have a little stare-down before it left. That was really cool too.

I'm glad to hear that the DNR has finally admitted there are cougars in the UP. Several years ago my niece and I saw a large black cougar just outside of Eagle Harbor. It was frustrating how no one would believe us. But we would just quietly look at each other because we knew what we had seen.

I'm just catching up on the Pasty Cam today. Wow! Sorry I missed yesterday's pictures. I love the pics, but especially the ones of the moose. Last year, when I got my first moose sighting (actually my only moose sighting ever) of a cow and her calf in Baraga County, the adrenalin was pumping. It is such an awesome experience. Isle Royale is definitely on my list of places to go.
