Over the weekend it was the annual Bridgefest celebration in Houghton and Hancock, commemorating the birth of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge. Festivities kicked off with a parade on Friday night that Daryl Laitila and Judy Byykkonen attended, sending in a few pictures for us all to enjoy.

The first two shots are from Daryl, with the Veterans of Foreign Wars carrying flags of all the branches of military (love the view of MTU in the background). Then a float with some of the residents from Cypress Manor Nursing and Rehab, including Doris Hoffman proudly holding a picture of her son Sgt. James Hoffman. Their float was flying a flag which had previously flown over Afghanistan, and was a gift from Sgt. Hoffman while he served over there in support of Operation Enduring Freedom VIII. Coincidentally, Sgt. Hoffman recently appeared on the Pasty Cam just two weeks ago, while home on leave.

The third photo from Judy, appears to be the Houghton High School Marching Band, decked out in their school colors of Orange and Black. Too bad we don't have a sound bite of what they were playing as they marched on by.

This last photo was supplied to us by Paul Roberts and fits in well with the Bridgefest theme. He snapped the Lift Bridge from a different angle than we're used to seeing. Can you tell what's different about it?

Good Morning All.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Monday, June 16, 2008 - 07:25 am:

Looks like loads of fun was had by all.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, June 16, 2008 - 07:52 am:

Everything in the picture is a mirror image; i.e., Paul shot a photo of his (or someone else's) car mirror from the Houghton side and that was the image in it!!!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, June 16, 2008 - 08:28 am:

That is probably it because everything seems backwards. The green signs are on the wrong side of the road. I noticed that immediately. Didn't think of the mirror angle though. Is Paul right?

By Interested Visitor (Tangobravo) on Monday, June 16, 2008 - 08:45 am:

Mr. Roberts seems to have inserted a negative, slide or print in the scanner incorrectly (we all do it) and forgot to flip it around.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Monday, June 16, 2008 - 10:16 am:

Now I'm really confused.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Monday, June 16, 2008 - 10:22 am:

Me too, Alex!! Mr. Roberts, please give us the answer.:)

By Paul Roberts (Grizzlyadams) on Monday, June 16, 2008 - 12:13 pm:

The masses have spoken so I will give the answer! :-) I got as close as I could to the water to get the shot of only the reflection. Pictures of reflections have always fascinated Once I uploaded it to my computer I simply flipped the picture so (ironically) the picture is upside down. The conditions were perfect so I took advantage of it. So that's the answer. Happy to entertain! :-)

Shirley/Interested Visitor,

I do believe that is the first time I have been reffered to as Mr. Roberts. Sounds really weird! I appreciate the compliment. Thank you! Oh, and Interested Visitor, I hope you enjoyed browsing the site. There is a wealth of information via pictures, etc. on it. I hope you found the site educational and entertaining. Come back and visit soon!

Thanks...that really cleared things up.

By Helen (Heleninhubbel) on Monday, June 16, 2008 - 02:40 pm:

What I like is you can't see the elephant blocking the view.......the bridge is always a beautifl sight. I thought maybe he took the picture from the lower road.....didn't even notice it was backwards......sigh

God bless ya'll

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Monday, June 16, 2008 - 03:12 pm:

Helen, I think the elephant blocking the view is backwards. That’s why you can't see it. (Sorry, I couldn't resist.)

By Helen (Heleninhubbel) on Monday, June 16, 2008 - 06:01 pm:

That's why I liked it so much.......

(it's ok....I am used to it)
