Looking back throughout the years, we've flown a number of different Flags to celebrate this Birthday of the Stars and Stripes, but today's display from Steve Brimm has a special element, namely, Lake Superior to add to the beauty of the waving flags. See Pasty Central's Day in History for some background into this celebration. Steve was able to capture several other flags that the Isle Royale Queen IV flies below Old Glory too. I can identify one for sure, it's the blue and white Finnish flag, but the other two I couldn't identify. Perhaps one of the Queen's Captains can give us some insight into the meaning of the bottom two flags? Make sure and put your own flag out today and fly it proudly!

Very nice picture. Our flag flies every day!!

By Paul Oesterle (Paulwebbtroll) on Saturday, June 14, 2008 - 09:28 am:

We have the U.S. flag and the State of Michigan flag on our center flag pole and a MSU and UM flag on either side. The university flags are on shorter poles. All three poles are in a nice flower bed. The flags are lighted all the time at night (on a timer), well not when our power is out like it was this last Sunday through Thursday afternoon! We try to keep the flags in good condition. This has been a custom in our family for about 35 years. God Bless America.

The top flag is our own Old Glory. The next in line is the Finnish flag, our family's heritage. The third flag stands for the letter "Q" in the nautical alphabet (which for us means "Q" for Queen) but has some other meanings for naval ships. The bottom flag is the burgee of the Portage Lake Yacht Club .

I just had a burgee at the Hut in Kearsarge. A Hut Burgee in fact.

Tell me more about the Isle Royal Queen. Privately owned? Based in Isle Royal? How does one get a ride ....or is it a fishing boat?

By Steve Haagen (Radsrh) on Saturday, June 14, 2008 - 03:25 pm:

William go to the home page and click on Isle Royale Line it will take you to there website and all the information you need.

And a WONDEROUS birthday to Brad Parker!!! Have a super day! Mac

By Donald Kilpela (Commodore) on Saturday, June 14, 2008 - 03:45 pm:

It is spelled Isle "Royale," as in French. Check out our website, cousin William, at www.isleroyale.com. I should have mentioned that plug in my previous post. Thanks for reminding me.

Mary says: My apologies Commodore Kilpela. I should have included the link in my notes up above too. It's there now and folks can either click on it in my notes or right above here in your note.

For all you Huskies fans out there, know that Bill's dad played hockey for the MTU Huskies in the thirties and in 1936 or 37 was captain of the team. He was known in his playing days as "Moon" Mullen. He's on the plaque of former MTU captains which is hanging in the ice arena.

Thanks for putting this picture on the Pasty Cam. I had never seen it. And thanks to Steve Brimm for recommending it.

From the angle of the land and lake we were probably on a meandering Sunset Cruise and heading West into the sunset. Unlike the waves we've been getting so far this season, the lake was nice and calm, my kind of ride.

By Donald Kilpela (Commodore) on Saturday, June 14, 2008 - 03:49 pm:

Correction: The burgee, I am reminded, is the Onigaming Yacht Club burgee, not the Portage Lake Yacht Club.

What's going on this weekend? The Ramada Inn parking lot is packed and there are porta-potties beside it.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, June 14, 2008 - 08:55 pm:

That's right. Today is Brad's birthday. He was born exactly 2 months after my son Todd. Happy Birthday Brad!!!!

Eugenia: It's Bridge Fest this weekend. So I'm guessing that's one
reason there are so many cars at the Ramada Inn.

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Saturday, June 14, 2008 - 11:22 pm:

Oh, thanks, Kosk, I didn't realize it was time for Bridge Fest already. Looks like a good crowd in attendance; I'm glad.
