I can't recall hearing "Michigan, My Michigan" since elementary school days. It's inclusion in "Day in History" is courtesy of Bill Haller, who helps research the feature. I think Bill and Eloise must have also supplied the incriminating photos for today's Pasty Cam, which - as they say in the business - was pretty much over the top :o)

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Wednesday, May 21, 2008 - 06:54 am:

Mornin', most of you know I don't get to hear it, but oh my, what it's replacement.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Wednesday, May 21, 2008 - 07:53 am:

It's nice to see you getting UP in the world Charlie.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Wednesday, May 21, 2008 - 08:01 am:

Oddly enough, I sang it just yesterday with some kids in my
class. One of them was humming "O Tannenbaum," so I told
them about how this melody is also the melody for "O Michigan"
and "Maryland, my Maryland." They asked what the words were,
so I sang them as best I could remember them. The ones I sort
of remember are :

A song to thee, fair state of mine, Michigan my Michigan.
What greater state than this that's mine, Michigan my Michigan?
The whisper of the forest trees, the thunder of the inland seas,
Unite in one fair (or great???) symphony for Michigan, my
Michigan.

Now, of course, my class feels it's unfair that Michigan has a
song, and as far as anyone I know seems aware, Ontario doesn't
(except for a Travel Ontario jingle). Now they want to write one.

Charlie: Somehow I didn't remember the words about Saginaw.
The ones I do remember seem to be referring to the good old
UP.

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Wednesday, May 21, 2008 - 08:19 am:

The Day in History quotation is the first stanza from the 1862 version of the song. It appears many places on the Internet, including Wikipedia, where you will also find complete sets of lyrics written in 1886 and 1902.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Wednesday, May 21, 2008 - 08:21 am:

This was on Wikepedia regarding the song.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Wednesday, May 21, 2008 - 09:30 am:

Speaking of 'no bugs allowed in park' how's the blackfly situation?

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Wednesday, May 21, 2008 - 09:34 am:

Picking up on yesterday's What's UP: I'm so glad you are safe, Beverly.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Wednesday, May 21, 2008 - 10:25 am:

Alex...your answer to my frogs/toads mates for life question yesterday was just hilarious!!! I had a crappy day at work yesterday and to see that answer was the answer I needed!!! Oh those one liners!!

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Wednesday, May 21, 2008 - 10:59 am:

Thanks for that link. I see me "remembered" version is linked to
the one from 1902. Well, recess is over. Back to class.

By Sharon I. Smith (Sharons) on Wednesday, May 21, 2008 - 11:01 am:

Maija - I don't think there are many bugs yet - too cold! And today, too windy! Although I do think I brought in a sluggish mosquito the other night with the bird feeders. Thank goodness for small favors...

By Musicteacher (Musicteacher) on Wednesday, May 21, 2008 - 11:25 am:

The blackflies are still frozen.

I caught the picture of the bomber that crashed in the Porkies. I have never heard that story.
Anyone with a quick recap of what happened and when?

Mary says: You can check out more information and pictures in Nate Alwine's Guest Gallery.
Click on this link for his album about the crash: B-17 Bomber Crash.
Here's a direct link to the biography written by Jeff Benya: B-17 Biography.
Nate also has several pictures of the wreckage that is still there today:
Crash site today - 1;
Crash site today - 2;
Crash site today - 3;
Crash site today - 4;
Carsh site today - 5.
Hope this sheds some light on this event in U.P. History.

Tom,

We featured the Porkies B-17 crash on this day in 2006. There are some good links with more pictures and information.

bomber
Alex,

I see that you and I were posting the same link from Wikipedia at almost the same time.

Mary says: Looks like you and I were posting about the B-17 at the same time too Charlie. Great minds run on the same track! ;->
Some of those links in the Archived article from 2006, don't take folks directly to Nate's album, since we've switched software for the Gallery. The links I posted above will get you directly to Nate's info and pictures.

I am enjoying the lack of bugs, too bad it won't last for long. Its colder downstate today, talked to Grandma and she said it was chilly and I was outside walking the yard for her at her place up here at lunch. Looks like I'm pruning roses this weekend.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Wednesday, May 21, 2008 - 04:05 pm:

Brilliant minds think alike, Charlie.

Looks like a lot of traffic goingUP. Leaving for South Range on Sat. Safe trips to all.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Thursday, May 22, 2008 - 12:11 am:

For those of you stuck in the Lower. I am doing a reenactment of the French and Indian war. We will be at the top of the hill in Port Huron. It is a benifit for the Port Huron Musueam. I know I spelt it wrong have been spelling it that way all my life. Right across from the hospital down town. At water works park. Come on by and chat. Andrea the Irish dancer and her family will be with me. Right now the tents are sitting out in the rain getting rinsed off. Hope they are dry by tomorrow night. Russ, you are pretty close.

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Thursday, May 22, 2008 - 01:32 am:

Mikie: Don't you mean Pinegrove Park? South of the the Bluewater Bridge(s), south of the Thomas Edison Inn, Where the "Huron" Lightship is docked, the Civil War Memorial is? This is across from the Port Huron General Hospital.-- and the park is on bit of a hill.

What day(s)? Time?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, May 22, 2008 - 08:05 am:

More great shots in the slide show. I LOVE the sign at McLain Park. That is great! Too bad the darn bugs can't read.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Thursday, May 22, 2008 - 12:25 pm:

Your right Russ, been doing this for at least twenty years. All day Sat. and Sun. from about eleven in the morning till about five in the afternoon. Battle is about two thirty and lots of other historical scenes. Music is great. Black pot bean soup, not my favorite meal is also available. My son Justin is going to be in the Farmington Memorial Parade. He is the officer of the year and he and his family will be riding in a convertable. I will be on the sidelines waving and making a fool of my self.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Thursday, May 22, 2008 - 07:58 pm:

Mikie: Enjoy the reenactment. Too bad we'll miss it. Though we'll
be in the LP this weekend, we'll be visiting with our parents,
preparing dinner and shopping. Good for Justin. Our son is
participating in a ceremony in Washington state.

Safe travels and Happy Memorial Day to all of the travelers no
matter what the distance.
