This is one of those times when being in the right place at the right time is crucial to the difference in a good photo and a great photo. Rod Burdick is the man behind today's shot, which captures the beauty of the Mackinac Bridge, along with the magnificence of a freighter making its way underneath the bridge. And as if that wasn't enough to make you smile, then take another look at the picture and feast your eyes on the U.P. across the way. Sure doesn't seem like 5 miles across the lake, does it?

OH my, how can you get any better than the bridge with a freighter going under it. Thanks guys!!!

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Tuesday, May 27, 2008 - 08:11 am:

Going over that bridge on a clear day is one of the best things. Thats what my daughter is looking forward to this summer.

This happens to be the scene Edie and I awoke to this morning, as we spent the night in Mackinaw City on our way back from the long weekend downstate.

Yesterday when we stopped off in West Branch it was 85 degrees. By the time we reached the Straits it had dropped into the 40's ! C-c-cold this morning.

Heavy frost on the deck here this morning, sun melted it off now. Hope a bit of that warmth is drafting you north, Charlie. Though the cool does slow the bugs down. My wife and son should be seeing the bridge on their way up here in a little less than a week.

I talked to someone today that said it was in the 20s this morning in Calumet. Welcome to fall!!! :-)

Thank you for the beautiful shot of the Mackinac Bridge. I put it on my desktop background. I'm in Florida and not getting UP there this year. Each time we've driven, that first sight of the Mac bridge would catch my breath, and then again, when we turn that corner in Houghton and see the bridge, knowing that Hancock was on the other end. No matter how many times we've done that, always the same reaction. So, thanks!!

Perfect photo! I can't wait until my vacation so I can enjoy the UP!!

Don't feel bad everyone--it's in the 40's in the Flint area today, too! On our trip UP, I'm usually sleeping between about West Branch and the Bridge. (No, I'm not driving!) But as soon as the Bridge comes into view, I wake up. Then we get out of the car either at the St. Ignace rest area or at McD and inhale that clean, lake air!

One time while a student at MSU I was traveling home very light(no money). I mistakenly ate lunch on the Mackinaw side and then realized I did not have the money for the toll. I relied on the good nature of the officers at the toll booths. They laughed as they took a couple of my veterinary texts as collateral. They showed me the room where a lot of other Yoopers had done similar things with tires , bikes and you name it. It was like a pawn shop. I was grateful, embarrassed and I did pick up my texts on the way back to MSU.

I don't care what they say out west. The Golden Gate has got nothin' on Mighty Mac.

I have had many cups of coffee at that exact spot. Wished I was there with a cup right now! Thanks for the pic! See you in September Mighty Mac!

What a great angle on the Big Mac, and it has a freighter about to go under the Bridge! That is an awesome photo! Thank you Rod Burdick and Mary!
