I can't say this Michigan Tech vessel is the first boat in the water at the Houghton County Marina in Ripley this year, but it's at least one of the first. Paul Roberts spotted it tied up to the dock and captured the owner (Tech) in the background. I didn't realize Tech had their own boat, but I suppose it makes sense that a college on the shores of the Portage Canal would have a boat to study the waters in the area. We're hoping someone can 'fill in the blanks' and put to rest our wondering minds, as to what the college uses this watercraft to study.

Back to the marina...it sure is a nice spot to spend your summer. You have dining, shopping and entertainment opportunities all within walking distance or just a dinghy ride away, if you motor across the canal to the Houghton side. Whether you rent a spot at the dock for the entire summer or just a transient slip for a few days, you'll have found a good place to relax and recharge your batteries. Make your reservations before the docks are filled up.

When we were up there for Tech's graduation, the Isle Royale Queen, I think is the name, was tied up at the dock near the beach in Houghton. The Park Service Boat was in the water (that may be in the water all winter?), and the smaller tour boat was moored next to the park boat. And, there was a big sail boat a ways beyond the Hancock marina. :-)

It is nice to see the boats moving, just made it back over the bridge yesterday before it was blocked to go up right after work. I think the Ranger was coming through, we here it in our office when it leaves.

That boat looks familiar, but it's probably not the exact same boat Michigan Tech had 15+ years ago when I was there. I was a student research assistant for Dr. Charles Kerfoot, an aquatic ecologist in biological sciences, and we used Tech's boat on little trips out to collect zooplankton samples and data(temperature, refraction, etc.) from Keweenaw Bay. It was interesting and great fun -- some of my favorite memories from Tech.
