On Day in History that stunt with the plane back in '59 was pretty unbelievable, considering the size of a B-47 bomber.

If you squint your eyes, it looks like a tugboat.

I wonder how they got that pig to pose.

Good morning! All the way up into the 50's today. Spring is trying to come. Have a great day.

Oops! Of all the things I've lost...I miss my mind the most. :-P

I was always sorry to read about the pilot getting sacked for that stunt of flying under Big Mac.
I realize that if he had missed it would have been terrible and perhaps damage the bridge a lot if not cause it to collapse. But those pilots are pretty good hotshots. A different breed of cat, so to speak---- What is the height at the middle of the bridge? 100 or more? A B-47 fit under that easily.
What fun!! Ha.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Tuesday, April 29, 2008 - 01:00 pm:

Imagine driving over the bridge at the time!

By Carolyn Rowland (Carolyn) on Tuesday, April 29, 2008 - 01:23 pm:

I never heard about the guy who flew the bomber under the bridge. That would have been so scary to be on the bridge at the time. I did some digging and found this article on Lappo and his indiscretion:

We sometimes lose sight of the ferocious energy involved when huge military machines are operated at high rates of speed...and how in the blink of an eye a fun stunt can evolve into instant death for innocent victims and a lifetime of loss and sadness for their families. Regardless of the machismo or presumed skills of the pilots, military aircraft have a very grave and serious mission. To treat them as toys just ain't on the list of acceptable behavior.

Props to Lappo, I agree with Tom

By Tom (Tom) on Tuesday, April 29, 2008 - 06:06 pm:

I wonder if Neil has ever flown under the Portage Bridge? Maybe he snuck under the Mack??? Ha! Just kidding. Those guys were probably practicing that low flying to sneak up on radar back in those days. That is still done. Talking about those pilots, one of my good buddies was an F4F pilot in the USAF. When I talk about a different breed of cat they are-------
perhaps sometimes a bit crazy?? Take chances but area good at what they do.

Heikki--You sure have an excellent repertoire of jokes! I've been
enjoying reading them, but didn't think I could make a comment on
that page.

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Tuesday, April 29, 2008 - 11:09 pm:

Oh what the heck, there are 150 feet between the bridge deck framework and the water. ;o) Those pilots are pretty sharp, but.... Holy Wah!! Didn't Arthur Godfrey get in trouble for flying his DC 3 under the Golden Gate Bridge way back when? Would've been something to see though, 'eh?
