Though it wasn't mentioned in Day In History, I believe today was Kevin Musser's birthday. Kevin will be remembered for the volume of archived photos and stories about railroads and the boom years in the U.P. at copperrange.org. Kevin passed away last September.

It sure is the middle of the night, that unique sneak of a Early Bird.

Even more than usual, today's "Decade of the Pasty Cam" had all of the elements that many of us call, or would like to call, home. Dan's shoreline scene of the Big Lake brings that little touch of heaven to us.

Superior Shores photo…another inspirational scene from Dan Urbanski.

Those are wonderful pictures of Dan's! And an amazing picture of the pileated woodpecker, especially since they're so elusive and he's front and center!

That's my river in Dan's photo...see how red it is? It's always like that, even in high water.

Question: How much wood does a woodpecker peck when a woodpecker pecks wood?
By Doug (Greenhermit) on Thursday, April 24, 2008 - 12:00 pm:
The question on Millionaire last night was "How many pecks in a bushel?" The guy didn't know the answer; nor did his dad, whom he called for a lifeline. Do you know the answer? I did! It was for $16,000.00. He walked away with his $8,000 because he didn't know.
By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Thursday, April 24, 2008 - 01:40 pm:
"A peck is an imperial and U.S. customary unit of dry volume, equivalent in each of these systems to 8 dry quarts, or 16 dry pints. Two pecks make a kenning (obsolete), and four pecks make a bushel."
I sure didn't know what a kenning was...but the operative word here is "was" since it is an obsolete word. Good research. You win the $16,000. The check is in the mail.
Interestingly, the dictionary has a kenning as: 1) knowledge or recognition or 2) a tiny quantity; trace.
Seems like two pecks or a kenning would be more than "a tiny quantity."

What, a paper check, not an e-check???
[I was developing software for an electronic clearinghouse on my last job, before I retired. (I never quite figured out how to roll all the "roundoff errors" into my checking account, though, or I'd be enjoying my retirement a whole lot more or more accurately I'd probably be "serving" my retirement in Leavenworth!]

About as much wood as a woodchuck would chuck?? ;-)

Kenning enough to get to the bug that bugged him.

Thanks for the 2005 slide show picture of the Atlas Powder Co.in Senter by Bill Haller. It was nice to be reminded of what it used to look like. My sister and I have "ties" to that office/house and the surrounding Atlas property.
