After months and months of the white covered ground here in the Copper Country, the snow starts rapidly disappearing and the landscape begins to come back to life. One of the first signs of life we normally see is the colorful Crocus Flowers sprouting up, captured here by Z-Man (top photo) and Bill Haller (second and third photos). You can almost reach out and pick those purple beauties in Z-Man's photo, with the vivid color of the petals jumping out at you.

The two pictures from Bill, give us a wider view of the growing habitat of these flowers and it's nothing fancy. In fact, the ground in these photos looks rather barren, except for the beautiful sprouts and magnificent flower arrangement. Especially in the bottom photo, you can still see where the ground is packed tight from the heavy winter load it held just a few short weeks ago.

What a fitting way to wish everyone a Happy Administrative Professionals Day! These hard working office professionals deserve a show of appreciation for all they do to make the office run well, so this is ours.

The crocuseseses are much easier to look at than the other yellow springtime "flower" that will be along soon.
Mr. Deb

Love those hardy little flowers!

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 - 08:29 am:

I have a whole bunch in my side yard, Taylor dragged me outside to see them Monday. Mine are in the smashed grass and leaves too!

By D. Clark (Dcclark) on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 - 09:11 am:

Crocuses? Croci? :P

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 - 10:30 am:

Driving through the local park this morning, I spied an abundance of marsh marigolds.

By John Preisler (Jpreisler) on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 - 10:34 am:

yeah but the dandelions are better eatin' than a crocus flower...

The wildflowers are a UP treat that most tourists don't get to experience. I get the impression that the tourists usually wait until after the blackflies are gone before coming up that way. :D

I never saw Lupine growing wild before I hit the UP in early June.

Love it, love it, love it.

Fabulous little peek-a-boos. I love them

By Sandy G (Artessss) on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 - 11:14 am:

I love the wildflowers here in Texas and take hundreds of pictures of them. First year here my back pasture was FULL of multiple types and various and brilliant colors! Isn't it wonderful all God paints for us to see! I see so many beautiful and hearty flowers in Michigan as well. What a sight!

Have a great day, all!

Beautiful pics! I have a question I was hoping someone might be able to help me with, we just got a new convection oven and I have only ever made pasties in a standard oven, does anyone have a recommended baking time and temperature for pasties in a convection oven? Thanks

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 - 11:30 am:

jodie w -- let us know when they're done....we'll be right over to make sure they cooked properly.

By Brenda Leigh (Brownmoose) on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 - 11:34 am:

Yes, John P. I agree the dandelions are great to eat. Every part of that plant is edible and full of so many nutrients. It is amazing to me that Americans spend thousands of dollars annually to eradicate something that is so healthy. BUT IN THIS WORLD TODAY YOU MUST HAVE A GREAT LOOKING YARD...forget about poisoning the ground water. Just cannot figure that out. Actually a dandelion reminds me of the sun, brilliant. They actually are a pretty flower it is just that most people are brainwashed into believing they are a bad weed.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 - 12:08 pm:

I love the pictures of the crocuses this morning! Thank you!

My special needs son brings me fistfuls (literally) of dandelions, every year, particularly in the spring. To him, he's bringing mom pretty flowers, and I definitely appreciate them, because it is that thought that counts! He is so proud, when he brings them to me. I haven't seen any dandelions, yet, either in the lawn, or in his hands, but I know they will be here soon enough. :-)

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 - 02:16 pm:

Marianne, I also get dandelion bouquets. Which must be put in water immediately!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 - 02:53 pm:

Brooke, yes, my dandelion bouquets are put in water immediately, if not sooner, LOL!

BTW, I'm curious how much snow you have left in your backyard, by your clothesline? We are coming up there next Friday for my oldest son's Tech graduation, and we are trying to guess what the state of the area where we will be walking our dogs at the motel will be in then. The dog walking area is in virtually full shade, facing the north, so it will be getting almost all of its heating from the air temp, not from the sun, etc. Will we be walking them on 3 feet of snow, in slush, in a mud puddle, etc? Many thanks!

By paul (Pungvait) on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 - 03:51 pm:

Marianne - it'll probably be bare ground (unless it snows again)

No snow, just dog poop!

By the way, congrats to the soon-to-be Tech grad from a Tech Alum!
