With the new blanket of snow we've received here UP North, I thought these two photos from Brian and Shawn Malone would be a nice respite from the white of the landscape. The Aurora Borealis (also known as the Northern Lights) display is truly something to behold, constantly changing right before your eyes, lighting up the night sky over Lake Superior, which these shots captured perfectly. Quite a spectrum of colors to give us a change of pace from the snowy pictures we've been viewing for the last 5 months or so. Although, if you take your eyes away from the colorful sky in the photos and pan down to the ground, you'll see the dirty snowbanks illuminated by the passing cars. So the snowbanks are still there, it's just that the Malone's directed our focus on the beauty in the heavens, not the stuff on the ground. Thanks Brian and Shawn!

I remember the first time I saw this light show. Bob and I were on a snowmobile vacation, we were walking back to The King Copper Motel from the Mariner, after supper one nite, what an awesome treat!

No snow here in Lansing today. We are supposed to hit 70° today and maybe severe weather in the afternoon, but no snow. Woo hoo!

Janie: Sometimes I read some simple thing, and I am transported to the place described. Such was the case just now when I read your post! The whole scene: walking back to the motel at night with the northern lights after dinner at the Mariner. Almost heaven, northern Michigan!
Just heard the weather report before I got out of my car coming back from lunch: Heavy rain, high winds, straight-line winds, possible tornado between 3:00 this afternoon and 10:00 tonight. Sounds like a day in the life of The Wilderness Family, except they'd have a wolf on the roof and a bear at the door. Right now it's beautiful out. We get out of school at 3:15 so all the kids will be going home in that, many to trailers. Hopefully it starts after we get home. But then I'll be right back out in it, going to my usual Friday night dinner spot in Clio (Twin's), and we HAVE to do that, regardless of the weather.

The photo's are gorgeous! It has been a long time since I seen a sight like that in person too.Thanks. Going to have to do something about that.Maybe I should come on UP, eh? Before they start printing those new $5.00 Bills good for one gallon of gas. Five dollars don't get you much now a days. But it is great to come here on Pasty and forget about things for awhile.

These are awesome pictures! I have only seen these once in my life so far and they are very breathtaking. They kind of make you just take in the moment and enjoy what you have. They also make you want to try and forget everything that is troubling you even if it is for a little while.

Great pictures, haven't figured out how to do that myself, but I keep trying. Wanted to add the dirty snow is gone for the moment, Winter is back by land
I showed these pictures to my class today. They were stunned. Living in the city, they rarely see any stars, let alone the Northern Lights. Lovely.

Wow! Nice pictures!! I love seeing pictures of the Northern Lights. Altho photos in general really don't do them justice. Got to see them many times while on vacation up north. Also got to see a few of the stronger aurora storms while I lived in Chicago area and even seen it about 3 times while here now in AL! For those of you that want to follow such and want to know when to look for them check out this site:
Wow, great links FRNash. I really enjoyed looking at them.

Great photos brings back many memories while growing up on Prospect Street in Hancock. One night in 1947 there was a super display of the Northern Lights as well as a great meteor shower at the same time. So much going on one didn't know where to look.
