As the sun sets over Lake Superior and the ice begins to recede, we pause to honor loved ones and friends that have passed on before us.

Our friend Bill Check, who we met through Northern Hardwoods, passed away last week at Omega House. His memorial service will be this Thursday, April 3, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Houghton.

Don't deaths come in threes as they used to say? First for me to remember is Dean Meador an avid ice fisherman who was finally found after 3 months. A dear friend and fellow Winter Texan Dan Stone of Muskegon, Mi. left to be with his Lord Easter Sunday. And my niece Peggy and Gordy lost his parents within several weeks of each other. Peace be with them all.

Remembering our Great Aunt Verna Kangas who past last year. She was a former employee of Still Waters. Today would have been her 90th Birthday. We miss her dearly and her favorite greeting "Your looking good". Verna---Thanks for all the great memories.

Thinking of my dad who died 16 years ago this month. I was only 12, he was only 43. Can't wait to see him again someday!

My Dad, Al McMurphy, passed away March 13, 1991. He is still missed by his wife, his three children and his grandchildren. Love you always...

Remembering Sergeant Edward L. Kolka who was killed in action March 2, 1968 in Vietnam. Forty years have passed my brother and the pain is still in my heart. God bless you and all fallen soldiers. We will never forget the sacrifice you have made.

Also I'd like to remember my Grandma Lucille Cundy whose birthday would be today. She's been gone nearly as long as my sister.
Finally I'd like to remember John Aird, a cousin of mine who passed away recently. He was a tough guy who fought 3 months in the ICU in Marquette before he gave in to go to live with all of the other cribbage , poker, & pinnocle partners who were either friends or family & Our Lord in the great beyond. I'm sure it's sure more lively with John being with them. Ha We'll sure miss him down here.

And I remember my dear friend Grace Camille Brown who died nearly 11 years ago. This month she would have been 54. Gracie, you have a two month old grandson, now. I miss you.

In memory of my dad, Bill Paull who went to meet his Lord and Saviour March, 1995. We still miss him so much but know one day soon we will all be reunited with him in Heaven. Can't wait Dad!

My one and only sister who would have been 64 on March 15. Judith Lynn Patana ( Hiltunen ) passed 9 years ago over the 4 th. of July holiday. I lost contact with my Brother-in-law Clarence J. Patana, and my niece's Leann and Lorie, they are somewhere in the suburbs around Detroit,not in Oak Park,MI.any more, Clarence is from Quwin, or some place near there in the U.P. and has a lot of kin there. His cousins had a Band called The Rhythm Rockers. We all had a falling out soon after Judy's death, it is time to put it behind us, if I could just find them.

Remembering Keith Johnson, the best Dad in the whole world. He was my Dad, my friend, my mentor, my inspiration and a loyal American who fought for this wonderful country in the Battle of the Bulge and beyond. I miss you and love you so much Daddy!

Tomorrow would have been my father Joseph [Cy} Du Longs 97th birthday. And the second of April would have been my parents seventysixth wedding aniversary. Miss them more then I could have imagined. Lucille Cundy was my Dads sister, never knew how close their birthdays were. Cheryl guess we are the older generation now. Also want to remember my pal Harry Burgess who lost his father yesterday. Mr. Burgess would have been 93 this year.

In memory of Barbara (Koitila) Hammer who was put to rest today at the age of 69. She was a beautiful soul and one of the most genuine people I've known. All of us, her family, miss her dearly.

YooperinTexas, did the Gauthier you talk about ever live in Lake Linden that you know of? I once knew a family who lived there and then moved to L'Anse. Was just wondering.

I don't think anybody mentioned Bill Seiler, and I forgot. I worked with him at UP Power when I was fresh out of high school and he was so much fun to be around. I believe he died in March. Anyway, remembering Bill.

I posted above for my Dear Sister Judy, and made a wish to get in touch with my Brother-in-law and my two Nieces who are in the Detroit area. Was nice of you Fran to remember Judy in that way. Well my wish came true,my Niece Lori called today Sunday April 6, 2008 one day short of a week since my post here. But the news she had was not good. She did get phone number for me from the Internet, she did not see my post here. She called to tell me her Sister,my oldest Niece who was just 41 in Dec. was found dead by her Father in a chair at home. When I called my Brother in $ Bay to tell him, and for him to call some other family, he phoned me back to tell me he just was told our Uncle Harry Gilbert passed on a month ago. He lived in Burton, MI. near Flint where he retired form AC Sparkplug many years ago. I don't know why nobody told us this back then? All of us Cousins who are now the old timers with grandchildren need to get in touch, if any of you are out there reading this. Only one Uncle left out of all of them. So Uncle Harry has gone to be with his Mom & Dad, brothers and sisters that went before, and Leanne with her Mother and Grandmother. Gone but not forgotten.....
