So we come to the end of a full decade of the Pasty Cam. We find there were only 2 previous "Leap Days" in the archives. In 2000 we had a memorial sunset by Jonathan Hopper - the original Pasty Camist - then in 2004 on the sunrise side of the Keweenaw, Bill Haller captured the solitude of the morning.
Both of these men have a hand in Pasty Central in other ways. Of course, Jonathan keeps everything operating, as he is our Systems Administrator at Pasty.NET, a very capable graduate of Michigan Tech, a creative problem solver, and (in case you hadn't made the connection) my son. Bill Haller and his lovely wife Eloise (Mrs. Bill) watch that sunrise from their home at Bete Gris, and Bill has become our resident historian, providing much of the background for the new "Pasty Cameo" features we introduced this month. Bill's book "Atlas Powder" is also the featured book-of-the month on our pasty order page as well.
It has taken a lot of teamwork over the years to make this daily feature happen. Some of that team are no longer with us, like Keven Musser - also an avid student of history - who passed away last year, and Dan Urbanski - gone several years now - who left a wonderful historic trail of visual beauty on these pages.
A list of everyone who has had a part in growing this online repository of the U.P. would include hundreds of names - many of which you can see in the Guest Gallery. Also, many who have never sent a single photo have painted word pictures on thousands of pages in this museum of Recycled Internet.
To each and every one who have had a part in helping us complete 10 years: THANK YOU

By RD, Iowa (Rdiowa) on Friday, February 29, 2008 - 07:38 am:
Let me add my congratulations for not missing a day in 10 years -
- but let me pose a question about your "Day in History" that REALLY has me puzzled:
Your narrative mentions the year of Henry Hobart's February 29 journal entry as 1863. I also have "Copper Country Journal" by Philip P. Mason, so I got it out and looked it up. On page 92 it does in fact list the entry as February 29, 1863.
What?!? I've always heard that Leap Years are years evenly divisible by 4, which would make 1864 a leap year, not 1863. Yet, when you Google "February 29, 1863" you get hundreds of events on that date. Do the same for 1864 and you get thousands. Do the same for 1865 and you get hundreds again!! Were there three leap years in a row?

congratulations Pasty, and heartfelt thanks to all involved.
Congrats to our Pasty Cam moderators and to all of us for making it fun and interesting every day! What beautiful pictures! Sometimes I look out my cottage window in the evening thinking there'll be no beautiful sunset that night, because it is too cloudy. Usually I'm surprised by the sun peeking through the clouds shooting diamonds across the water to us.

Happy Anniversary/Birthday to One and All responsible for 10 wonderful years of information and pleasure. I'm one of the silent ones who only discovered you within the last few years. I'm still enjoying going back over the years in the hope I will recognize someone or thing as a former resident of the Keweenaw. I hope to return soon, if I can ever sell my house in the lower and return to my home there.

Leap Day is a positive omen for me. After a week of struggling, I finally got Part 2 of Nuggets of a Native published. It was originally declined because I stated I had published a portion of it at the Brockway Inn Bear Page, even though I still own the rights.
So I tried again and got it done today. So, you guessed it, this one is about the Copper Harbor Bears and my "bear picnic." It contains 2 pictures from the Pasty.cam archives, thank you Charlie.
Pasty Cam 10 wonderful years! I can't tell you how much this site means to me and,I am sure,to many others. Thank you all for a really superb site.

Charlie I want to thank you for 10 great years of your great work on here. I have been checking it every night for all that time. THANK YOU ONE AND ALL THAT DO THIS FOR OUR ENJOYMENT.
By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Friday, February 29, 2008 - 02:57 pm:
Thanks, Betty, and in answer to RD's earlier question about Leap Day... There are numerous examples of invalid days which show up when you do a Google Search. For example, try googling "February 30, 1970" and you'll several events and people claiming to be born on that day.
When you do any search, be sure to go the second page of the results, and you'll see a more accurate count of how many occurrences were really found. After a very close look at the search results for googling 1862, 1863, and 1864, it appears that in fact 1864 was Leap Year. Why did Henry Hobart add an extra day in '63? Maybe he was so wrapped up in the spelling bee that it slipped his mind. Or maybe sometimes part of the country just got out of sync back then, sort of like with Daylight Savings Time. But THAT's another story.
By the way, I did find a rendition of "John Brown's Body" with the words, courtesy of the National Archives on this 1903 cylinder recording

Happy Birthday, Pasty Cam! I'm home from looking after my husband's mom and dad in Lower Michigan the past few days. My husband read me Pasty Cam entries over the phone while I was at St. Joe's in Ypsilanti. My in-laws do NOT have a computer, so I had to leave home without it (PastyCam). I'm just catching UP on the past few days.
I drove back to Toronto at 4:30 this morning. The kids in my class asked how everything was in Michigan. When they ask, they always put their hands up in the shape of Michigan. Well trained, hey?

Here's a bit of trivial information: Since the start of the Gregorian Calendar in 1582, Ash Wednesday has not occurred on February 29, and is not scheduled to do so until 2096!
