What an interesting piece of history. Thanks for bringing it to our
attention, Charlie.

By RD, Iowa (Rdiowa) on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 - 06:56 am:

It is certainly a moving story. I found this googling Sargent Mitchell's name: The Forgotten Battalion

OH my gosh! That view of the Porkies is spectacular!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 - 08:48 am:

Rdiowa, thanks for posting the site of the "Forgotten Battalion", a very moving tribute to one of America's finest! I had a cousin, (a Marine) who was being transported from offshore, in an LST to Iwo Jima during that time. He and his buddies were to arrive on shore in a tank, however their tank was blown up and only he and the gunner survived.

Morning everyone. I'm wondering if anyone has any info on the annual Yooper Picnic held in Sarasota, Florida. I believe it is sometime in March but can not find a website or any info on the date. It's at the park on Clark Rd. and the I-75. I hear it's quite a 'shindig' so if anyone can help, thanks.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 - 12:55 pm:

Can anyone tell me how much snow we've had this year in the Flint area, or where to go on the web to find out? I see Allouez has 191+ inches thus far. I'm better at finding out about Keweenaw-related things than I am Genesee County!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 - 01:31 pm:

Marsha, when it snows, WNEM TV 5 has been mentioning the snow totals at Flint Bishop & MBS airports. I know that as of 2/14, MBS had broken an all-time record for the entire month of Feb, but I'm not sure of the number. And, we were already at double (something like 64.4" or something, instead of like 29") our normal annual snowfall. As of that date, I think he said that Flint was close to the all-time month of Feb record, but had not quite broken it then, but would, for sure. I wish I knew where to find it in writing. But, they will probably bring it up again on this evening's newscasts.

I also understand that most school districts in mid-Michigan have used up all of their snow days, and some had gone over. They said that ours has "at least one more" snow day left. The last time this happened, the then governor forgave some of the time, so most of the school districts did not have to go into the summer. It is within the governor's power, in years like this one.

By Cheryl Rozman (Cotton) on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 - 04:44 pm:

I enjoyed reading the Forgotten Battalion & listening to the music while I read the information. Thank you for adding that for us to read. My father never spoke of his part of fighting in WWII but he was among the thousands of soldiers to fight in Iwa Jima. And with a guardian angel on his shoulder I'm sure, he was one of the few to be fortunate to survive that part of the war. Let's all take a minute to say a prayer for those who weren't as fortunate as my father to come home. And thank you Charlie & Mary for reminding us what day is today in our American history.

By Snowman (Snowman) on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 - 06:54 pm:

Snow days,
Old ways,
Red cheeks,
Long weeks,
Hot fires,
Spring desires,
Snow, you were dear,
But see you again, next year.
