Brenda Leigh took a walk in the woods recently and she noticed a bit of color decorating the trees. Nature is amazing and this trio of pictures illustrates something I've always wondered about...how do some leaves seem to hang on forever, even in the dead of winter? With the winds we experience during the wintry storms, they still cling on the branch, rustling and making a racket, but staying put like they're clamped on tight. How do they do that?

How do they do that? Perhaps there was a maldistribution of Sustained Internal Strength Units (SISU) among the leaves. ;->

Sustained Internal Strength Units: great one, Heikki!
I could use some SISU on my head. Is it available OTC?

Where was the picture taken? The top pic appears to be an American Beech, which aren't commonly found in the Keweenaw. They notoriously hold onto their leaves for a long time. I'm guessing this was from the Eastern U.P?

Brenda's album identifies the photos as taken last month in the Menominee area.

The gold and white coloring of the snowy leaves is very pretty against the blue sky! Nice picture!

Great photos Brenda. Thanks for posting them Mary. I have always been fascinated by the hanger-ons on my backyard maple. It always seems like the same branches retain their leaves. Each year in late February the squirrels will collect as many as they can carry and take them back to line their nests. Maybe that is why they don't fall, Mary !
I've always thought the scene was beautiful and when I discovered an artist from Kalkaska who thought the same I had to purchase one of his beautiful prints that perfectly depicted the view from my window. Including the Junco. See his website.
The U.P. where the sky is so blue and the snow as white as a dove.
