Donn de Yampert didn't say where in the U.P. this shot was taken, but it's the kind of picture that grabs your attention for the serenity and quietude it displays, making you want to just sit and stare at it for hours on end. That's easier to do from the comfort of your computer, since you really won't get chilled like you would if you were out there in person, traversing through the snow. But if you've taken a chill just looking at Donn's photo, then David Majestic is here to turn up the heat with a toasty wood fire blazing in the stove. Sit down for a spell and soak up some of the warmth. I can't think of a better way to start the New Year.
Which reminds me, Happy New Year from all of us here at Pasty Central!

Happy New Year to all. Elkhart, Indiana has gotten about 8 or so inches of heavy snow over night with more on the way. Lake effect until Wednesday so we may have between 12 and 16 inches before it is all through. Thanks for the web site I check it every morning to see what the Copper Country looks like. Some great pictures over the years...

Ironic that Majestic is a company that makes woodstoves! We have about 10" on the ground in Genesee. Three to six more inches predicted by noon, and then the blowing and drifting starts. Haven't had snow like this here in a long time! My sister and her husband have a flight back to Florida this morning. Hope they can get out their long driveway and down the roads leading to the expressway, which I hear is in bad shape also. That link on the preceding page to Bay Cliff Memories looks interesting. I think I'll have time to look at that today! School starts tomorrow for me, but maybe I'll luck out and have a snow day. Have a Happy New Year's Day!

HAPPY NEW YEAR to all who visit this great site. We get our daily fix here and try to add some info on occasions..Thanks to all who keep this running smoothly. We had exactly 1/2" of snow today and will go out for the paper in my tennis shoes, and we live in southern Wayne county..guess cities north of Detroit got 8.5" or so..

Those pictures are great! It's a great way to start the new year. I remember so many times skating at the Lake Linden ice rink as a kid and going into the warming house to sit on the huge furnace they had in there. Great memories and that's what the top picture reminds me of. Too bad the rink is no longer there.

We used to burn wood as our primary source of heat for many years, sure saved on propane expense. Wood is a lot of work if you are up to it.
Happy new year to all! Hope it is a good one for everybody.

The top picture looks much like our neighborhood in Southern Oakland County - 12 inches of snow since midnight. It's a good U.P. kind of day. Happy New Year!!

Happy New Year from Mishawaka IN. 10" of snow here in northern Indiana and more lake effect on the way. I love the top picture. It looks so quiet.

Speaking of ice, some of our group went ice fishing on Saturday on the little lake where our cottage is located. The neighbors (UP visiting from Washington DC) cut a hole in the ice in front of their sauna and their boys actually took turns lowering themselves into the frigid water. Our daughter made herself a small ice rink in front of our dock and tried out her $2 skates that she had purchased from Saint Vincent de Paul's in Ishpeming. No matter what we did out in the snow or on the ice, the wood stove was a welcome source of warmth as we came back inside.
Happy New Year from Toronto where the snow is still falling.

Happy New Year, everyone! I am keeping warm by doing some cleaning, as all my family is gone back home except for 91 yr young Mom, and I am vacuuming the whole house, under furniture and all, without disturbing anyone. (Mom doesn't have her hearing aids in yet.)
We actually made it up till midnight to welcome in the new year, although I was dozing a bit the last half hour. Every year I think this may be the last year for Mom, but so far she is holding on. This morning a light snow is falling, and I think I will go out for a bit of snow shoeing after Mom is settled in with a book for the morning.

That looks like a wonderful way to get some humidity into the air too... all those pots on the wood stove. Can almost feel the warmth coming off that stove!

"HAPPY NEW YEAR", TO ALL. HERE IN TROLL LAND(SHELBY TWP, MI.) WE GOT 9" LAST NIGHT. THAT WOOD STOVE SURE LOOK'S GOOD. IT REMINDS ME OF MY GRANDMOTHER'S OLD COAL BURNING STOVE.
By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, January 1, 2008 - 01:42 pm:
Being safty minded the first thing I noticed in the second picture was the red gas can behind the stove. Happy New year from Berkley, about six inches of snow.

We always had woodstoves when my kids were young and still at home. Then my husband decided he'd had enough of making wood (and I'd had enough of the mess!). One year I asked for a shop vac for my b'day so I could keep it cleaned up. I used to simmer a pot of soup on the stove and call it "Little House On The Prairie Soup" and that got them to eat their veggies! Also I would have hot chocolate simmering there when they came in from sledding. I wonder if they remember those things? My hubby has 6-year-old Madilyn up to the school hill sledding now. I guess I'll go whip up the hot chocolate I had planned and put it on the gas log stove to give her a thrill. I wonder if she'll catch on that the top of this stove isn't actually hot?!!! Back to school for me tomorrow, but she's off at her school until Monday like most schools down here. Actually I liked getting off more days before Christmas.

Nothing like the warm feeling of the radiant heat from a woodstove. Feels even better if you were the one who "made the wood" being burned. Is the water bowl on the floor for the dog? They are smart enough to know where the prime lounging spot is.
By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, January 1, 2008 - 04:42 pm:
The first picture is gorgeous. The second one is very homey looking, except I think I would have preferred a fire that was not quite as hot, I think. Thank you, Donn, David, and Mary for today's pictures!
This has to have been one of the shortest school vacations in memory. Our kids were in school through the day on Dec 21, and they are back in school tomorrow. It's been a long time since school started on Jan 2. So much to do, so little time... Oh well, there was no time for the kids to get bored.

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Tuesday, January 1, 2008 - 09:57 pm:
We probably got less than 1/2" today UP in Cornell. Was easy to sweep off the sidewalk. :o) Yes, Mikie, that red can behind the stove IS scary!
By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Tuesday, January 1, 2008 - 09:59 pm:
Then again, the stove probably has a heat shield on the back. Hopefully.
By Steve Haagen (Radsrh) on Wednesday, January 2, 2008 - 12:57 am:
Hay there is a fire extinguisher on the other side of the stove, do they off set each other?
By Mr. Bill (Mrbill) on Wednesday, January 2, 2008 - 04:04 am:
An isolated, localized, snow cell over Bete Grise for about the last 24 hours .... about 16 inch's thus far.
Do you realize there is a gas can to the back left side of that wood stove? Would a fire extinguisher even work if anything should happen?
