Through the years we've had many requests for landmarks in the U.P. This was one which appeared 8 years ago.

Good Morning. Everyone ready for the storm coming to mid/lower peninsula?

By Cheryl Rozman (Cotton) on Saturday, December 1, 2007 - 08:08 am:

I remember going to teen dances there in the 60's, St Cecelia church & community bazaars in later life. And also going to many wedding receptions there, including our son Scott's 11 years ago. I'm not sure if they use it much anymore because of the lack of accessibility for the handicap.
I lived next to the fire station many years ago so I heard many loud sirens & saw many fireman running to jump on the fire truck to go to the fires. Such brave men & also volunteers.

Yeah Hubbell!! That's where I grew up. I remember going to the Community Building to see Santa. He always knew our names too!! How'd he do that?? I know, he's Santa. Also, 4-H in an upstairs room.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, December 1, 2007 - 08:51 am:

Good morning! Yup, attended lots of wedding receptions there, including my cousin's. I think I went to see Santa there once, but we usually went to wherever he was in Lake Linden. I think that was usually at the high school and you'd get your bag of treats. There are so many fond memories of the Lake Linden/Hubbell area.

We're supposed to get a foot of snow this weekend. I'll believe it when I see it. I guess I should get out and about this morning before the "big storm" hits.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Saturday, December 1, 2007 - 09:49 am:

I spent part of my youth in Hubbell and remember fondly the Community Center. I was born on the corner of Daisy and Main and when Doctor Burke came to the house my brother was worried about the dog being sick and insisted that the doctor check the dog out before attending to my birth. I also remember when Santa would be at the Center and there would be somekind of entertainment at the same time. Also the bingo games there during the year. Now with t.v. people don't use the Comunity Centers like they once did. The one here in Berkley is busy during the day but dead at night.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, December 1, 2007 - 10:10 am:

Good Morning, Everyone! I hope everyone enjoys the relative calm before the storm, so to speak. I really hope that the ice stays away, but we are supposed to get some today & then some again tomorrow. Snow is ok, just not ice. Hang in there, you all, and stay safe! Mikie, are you telling us that you remember something that happened before your birth, LOL?

I heard the weather was really wicked in Houghton, after I posted that about Da Tech's web cams, early yesterday afternoon. This could be a real winter for Michigan, all over.

Have a good Saturday, and run your errands today. :-)

Attended many a polka dance at that Community Center in Hubbell. Was one of the places to go. Same with the Community Center in South Range. Good times

By Eddyfitz (Eddyfitz) on Saturday, December 1, 2007 - 11:09 am:

I attended many fuctions at the Community Building while growing up in Hubbell..Most of our family held their wedding receptions there, while we played hide & seek!!!
Can recall a church bingo there in the '40s where I won a can of corn.(pre Vegas)
Also had many evenings waiting on the porch freezing and waiting for the bus to come to pick us up for Basketball games.
After the WW11 battle I stood watch with my dad there with the CIVIL AIR PATROL as we listened for planes as they flew over..(only one was at 10:34 to land at Oneco but we got to phone to Green Bay to alert them there..That is probable where the flight came from anyway)
Ah the great memories of growing up in Hubbell.

WW 11???? Did I miss a few World Wars in there someplace???? ;-)

By Helen in the U. P.! (Lahelo) on Saturday, December 1, 2007 - 02:02 pm:

Vicky p, we are also getting hit with another snowstorm this weekend! We have had 2 so far this week here in the western end of the U.P.
So everyone batten down the hatches once again!

By Steve Haagen (Radsrh) on Saturday, December 1, 2007 - 02:22 pm:

Did anyone see the boat go under the bridge today?

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, December 1, 2007 - 02:31 pm:

Lahelo and Vicky p, the National Weather Service kicked our weather alert up to a Winter Storm Warning now, for our first major winter storm of the season here in Troll Land. We are supposed to get 5 to 10 inches of snow overnight, followed by sleet and freezing rain for here in mid-Michigan. Ugh! It looks like most or all of Michigan will get the blast. My guys got our snow blower ready to go; now they just have to be sure they have gas for it, LOL?

I hope you all have plenty of food, and other supplies, etc., so you can stay in tonight and tomorrow. It looks like we could be getting the same storm that Iowa has now. A United Airlines jet slid off the runway in Des Moines this morning. Their airport has been closed since then, thanks to their ice storm. The police put chains on the tires of all of the Des Moines police vehicles to help get around on the ice from this storm. I really hope the ice doesn't come our way. :-)

Stay warm....be safe....and hopefully no one loses power here! Take care.

The snow! The snow! Whoop! Hooray! Ho! Ho!
Plunge in the deep drifts and toss it up so!
Frolic and roll in the feathery fleece,
Plucked out of the breasts of the marvelous geese
By the little old woman who lives in the sky;
Have ever you seen her? No, neither have I!

By NKR (Nkr) on Saturday, December 1, 2007 - 06:15 pm:

Hello from Mishawaka IN. Its 24° this evening. We have had a little snow and freezing rain. By the looks of the bridge cam John Dee is one happy camper. I have never known anyone to love snow the way he does. Stay warm everyone.

Where’s The Snow, Snow, Snow?

Dear Diary,

My heart is aching for that perfect sign, the sign of snowflakes from the sky. The white cleansing powder will rid the earth of it's gloom and gray, help is surely on the way. Decorated the Christmas tree today, trimmed it with snowflakes to honor the day. Baked cookies and stowed them all away, in anticipation of that wonderful Christmas Day. Peeked out the windows all day today, no snow in sight on this cold dreary day. Lo and behold what was that sound? Could it be snow, slowly falling down?
With a sad heart, I finally sat down, drew the blinds and started to frown. All that was out there wasn't fresh snow, it was freezing rain that made me know, the UP is where you get the best snow. With a sad heart I gave up on the snow, stared at the walls because now I know, to get the best snowfall, it's UP north you go.

An Ode To Snow by Me, Snowman.

Didn't see the boat go thru but I saw the fresh track in the ice this afternoon. Unusual to see the canal frozen over this early.

By Shawn Wyant (Sawyant) on Saturday, December 1, 2007 - 10:52 pm:

Eddyfitz mentioned Civil Air Patrol. Just to let everyone know Civil Air Patrol is now 66 years old today. Civil Air Patrol started on Dec 1st 1941. I am proud to be a member of that great organization.

By Steve Haagen (Radsrh) on Saturday, December 1, 2007 - 11:43 pm:

I saw the fresh track and wish I would have caught it going under the bridge.
