We come not only to the end of the month, but also to the end of another year. As we do so, let us pause and reflect on those that we've lost and have gone on before us. This month they include:

Rev. Msgr. Louis Cappo
Jim Knight
Robert "Rip" Messner
Jack Nordine
John "Sonny" Plute
Joseph "Chinko" Rossi
Yvonne Whitman
The courageous servicemen and women that gave their all for us

It is never easy to lose someone you love or care about. To all those that have lost a loved one or friend during the year 2007, our sympathy goes out to you. Hopefully you will find some comfort in remembering them here on these pages, please feel free to add your loved ones and friends names. A special thank you to Donna MacIntosh for today's inspirational picture.

A note about today's picture...

I took this picture one afternoon, when a big black storm cloud was marching across Keweenaw Bay, and the sun was still blazing...I wanted a picture of the contrasts of the light and dark.

This came back.

We are never alone.

By Richard E. Johnson (Richiej) on Monday, December 31, 2007 - 03:00 pm:

In memory of my late father Frederick William Johnson, who passed away on May 29 this year at 94. A Copper Country/Keweenaw native born in Red Jacket/Calumet in 1913, son of a Swedish American father and Finnish mother. His father was a C & H miner and they lived in miner's houses in Laurium, Calumet and Ahmeek. A graduate of CHS class of 1931, he played goaler on the Wolverine A.C. championship winning hockey team in 1933; helped build the golf course at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge, and became an avid golfer. He enjoyed working in the summertime at his uncle's farm on Bootjack Road up from Dreamland (Waarala farm). Sadly over the years my mother and all his friends have preceded him in passing. He was the last to go of everyone he knew.
In the last few years he really enjoyed it when we would look at the weeks pictures on pasty.com every Sunday on my laptop computer. Every year without fail, we would make the trek up to the Keweenaw from Detroit to his lakefront property on Bootjack Rd. He wanted to make the big CHS class reunion this year and stop by the Hut for dinner, but ran out of time. I was looking forward to driving him up there.
When I asked my father where he wanted to go in the hereafter, he said home. When asked where was home, he said Ahmeek. When he got there, he said, all his friends would come out greet him at the baseball field.
You'll find his spirit there now, or over at the farm with his cousin Aimo, or golfing with my mom up at the Mountain Lodge. I can see them now and they are all happy to be together again.
Bless you dad.
I thought I would share this with you:
Indian Prayer:
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain,
when you wake in morning hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet
birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.

By Helen in the U. P.! (Lahelo) on Wednesday, January 2, 2008 - 11:46 am:

To our Little Miss Seven, she was only a year and a half old, she was killed by a car. She was the joy and mine and Z-man's life...just not the same without her. Whyskie Rose lost her best friend, she is really lost. What a terrible way to loose a pet...Keep them tied up don't let them run loose! Just wish someone would of stopped and told us what happened is all.

By Fran in GA (Francesinga) on Wednesday, January 2, 2008 - 09:30 pm:

This was a sad Holday season. My neighbor and very best friend lost her battle with Cancer on December 29th. She was buried on December 31 in the cemetery outside of our subdivision. I will never forget you "My Sister". She came from a family of 12 kids in Montana and I came from a family of 7 kids in The UP. Since we had no family here we proclaimed our selves sisters. Loved you Sharon!

By Fran in GA (Francesinga) on Wednesday, January 2, 2008 - 09:40 pm:

On Dec 29th I lost my very best friend here. We proclaimed our selves "sisters" because all her brothers and sisters(12 were in Montana and all of mine are in Michigan. It was so hard to say goodbye but I know she is no longer suffering from Cancer and is wearing her big smile again. It was hard to say goodbye but we will meet again one day. Love You Sharon.
