On a recent drive from Marquette back to Hancock on US-41, Susan Hooker spotted something quite unusual near Champion. She said their first thought was that someone's pipes had burst, but upon closer inspection, discovered it to be a "natural fountain". A little further down the road, at an art gallery in Michigamme, they discovered that this phenomenon is the result of a stream flowing from a little lake located higher up, and the pressure from it causes this "fountain" to develop. Apparently it happens most winters. Check out the third shot, which is zoomed in on the water spout coming out of the icy formation. It looks like some of that water is freezing in mid-air as it spits out of the top! To quote Susan's note to me: "Isn't Mother Nature fun?"

WOW, very impressive!

It actually runs through most summers too, it's just not as obvious then because there's no ice to catch your eye.

It's on the north side of the highway, on the west side of Champion, as you're going around the bend after crossing the railroad tracks (when westbound).

...

At least if memory serves me correctly.

I recall a similar sight just outside of Bruce Crossing when I was a kid. Each winter, someone used to make a frozen "fountain" on purpose with their garden hose, I believe. It would get very tall.

Holy cow. I thought something like that only happened in Yellowstone. Now I've been set straight.
