For years here in the U.P., families would simply walk out in the woods to find a Christmas tree. Near the Ravine River, Baraga County in 1971, this Arvon Township family looks like they want to take home an Eastern White Pine that's about 15 feet around. Bit of a problem getting it through the door.
A favorite website we discovered this year is the Upper Peninsula Digitization Center, where today's Shoebox Memory was found. The site is a collaboration of distinguished historical societies, libraries, local government offices and individuals which are building an ever-growing collection of the visual history of the U.P.
Be sure to join us next week for the final Shoebox Memory of 2007, some personal memories and observations from the past year.
Have a good week... and Merry Christmas :o)

Oh those groovy plaid and/or wide striped pants that were in fashion back then!
By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Sunday, December 23, 2007 - 10:53 am:
Janie, I still have a pair of those groovy plaid pants. Black and red, wool for hunting. The jacket wore out many years ago, but the pants are still wearable, only problem is I can't seem to get them on. They must have shrunk over the last fifty years. I seem to have a lot of clothes in the closet that shrinks while hanging there. Must be too damp in the closet.

Hey Mike! We have one of those closets in our house also!!

There are still plaid pants! Just bought a pair, size 6 mo, for my new grandbaby, Thatcher!

Good move Maija! Thatcher is too young to say, "Grandma, is this supposed to be a tablecloth?"
