With photos like these here today, it's often a case of being in the right place at the right time. Either that or it's due to plenty of patience while waiting for the perfect shot to come along. Whichever is the case, David Majestic captured some dandy photos of a couple members of the U.P. deer herd, that survived the 2007 firearm season. That first picture would make a great puzzle to tax the most dedicated builder, could be the "Where's Waldo" of wildlife photos. Can you find the deer?

The other two shots are a bit more obvious. That's a splendid looking ten point rack that guy is sporting. I can't remember now, what time of year is it, the bucks shed their antlers?

Excellent shots and a great way to hunt...with a camera.

PS: My pasties should have shipped today. Gettin hungry already.

The November picture for the 2009 calendar?

By Heikki (Heikki) on Wednesday, December 12, 2007 - 05:11 pm:

Wow! What a beautiful buck. Second photo almost looks like a painting. He should be shedding his antlers within a month or two. The process is triggered by hormonal change at the end of the rut.

Hey Goldwinger! I put in a order for a mixed pack of pasties today. They don't ship until the 26th!! Hope I can make it. We only have one left.

A piece of trivia for you: You might know that reindeer are the only deer species in which both sexes have antlers. But did you know that both shed them, but that males do it in the fall/early winter (as Heikki says) and females do it much later? So all those pictures you see of Santa and his antlered reindeer---bet you never realized that they are all female, including Rudolph!

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Wednesday, December 12, 2007 - 11:14 pm:

Can you name Santa's eight reindeer? 'Course then there is Rudolph. Nine. Can anyone name the 10th reindeer? Answer in the next post. :o)

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Wednesday, December 12, 2007 - 11:17 pm:

I think Z-Man told us it was Olive

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Wednesday, December 12, 2007 - 11:17 pm:

The 10th reindeer's name is "Olive". Y'know, as the song says, "Olive, the other reindeer, used to laugh and call him names..." Gotcha! :o)

By Jan Burkholder (Lady_slipper_98) on Thursday, December 13, 2007 - 03:21 am:

Yes reindeer can have females with antlers but rare with White tail deer. Here is a website that explains it: http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/volunteer/mayjun04/fndoes.html Beautiful pics.

Ken, While looking for Christmas books for my youngest grandchild last weekend, they had one called "Olive, the Other Reindeer". My husband and I just laughed cuz we've heard that too. I didn't get it for him. Wish I would have.

One of my co workers had a big one come out of the woods in her yard on the first and got a picture. They counted 13 points!

This guy here needs another year to grow, Uncle Chuck is right.

While the rack is impressive, he is but a pup. Look at that narrow neck. I think the doe in the first picture is bigger.

By Heikki (Heikki) on Friday, December 14, 2007 - 03:16 pm:

I checked Dave Majestic's album for this one, and he had photographed this buck 1/11/05, so much of the swelling had gone down by then. Probably shed its rack shortly after.
