Looking up toward Crestview, above Eagle River, as seen from the roof where the Pasty Cam lives. Things sure have changed in the last 8 years.

Good morning all!! Uncle Chuck, Grampa Norm and Marty are all at Little Betsy. If you are in the area, stop in for coffee!! I wish I was there with them. But someone has to work for a living. Just kidding. And women are not allowed at deer camp. Enjoy the weekend all.

Good Morning, Everyone! Good luck to a all of the teams who are playing in the Michigan High School Regional Playoffs this weekend. Midland High (9-2) plays Davison (8-3) here in Midland tonight. Go Midland Chemics!

A funny and crazy, but true story on car-deer accidents: At least in this area, if an accident makes it into the newspaper, the log will show either that John Q Public hit a deer, or John Q Public was driving a vehicle that hit a deer; those are the paper's standard lines. Last Saturday night, though, two different Midland County Sheriff's deputies encountered deer in the span of just a few hours of each other, in two different sheriff's patrol cars, a few miles apart. In both cases, the logs in the newspaper showed that the deputy was driving along (the highway), when a deer ran into his patrol car (not the patrol car hit the deer)!!! Right, LOL! If they can say that for the sheriff's deputies, then that's the way they should say for the other drivers!

Happy Friday and a have a good weekend!

It's cold here in the morning and then 80s in the afternoon. Kinda makes you say Hmmmmmmm and know why you have the snarkles in your nose in the morning. That and the cotton being hauled south from here.

Greetings from LB, where the big lake is calm, and it's great to be U.P. here. Sure wish we could get DSL, this dial up is pain. It's great to be in the Keweenaw!

By Musicteacher (Musicteacher) on Friday, November 9, 2007 - 11:58 am:

Marianne: Here in Calumet, we often hit deer with our
cars. My Blazer is going to the shop on Monday for that
very fix. However, down in the Crystal Falls/Iron
Mountain area, the deer actually do run into the side of
your vehicle. I have had it happened to me several
times, and it has happened to my son and my daughter
at various times. Maybe the deer in Iron County run
slower and can't get in front of you, or maybe they don't
see as well!! But, I know it does happen.

By Snowman (Snowman) on Friday, November 9, 2007 - 12:46 pm:

When they're in "rut" they have a one-track mind and will run right into your vehicle.

Uncle Chuck, can I help you ice-down the beer?

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Friday, November 9, 2007 - 12:46 pm:

There is a percentage of car-deer accidents whereas the deer does hit the vehicle on the side.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Friday, November 9, 2007 - 12:54 pm:

One of the guys I work with had that happen to him twice last year. Once in his wifes explorer and once on his f-150. His wife wasn't even moving she stopped for the neighbors who spooked it when they walked down the road so it turned around and ran right into her truck. I think "Dumbfounded" would best describe how she felt.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, November 9, 2007 - 01:41 pm:

Russell E, Musicteacher, Snowman, and Brooke--you guys are right, there is a percentage of car-deer accidents that are caused by the deer running into the vehicles. It is just that was our silly newspaper (which makes a number of other errors and omissions, which is an understatement), reported two sheriff patrol car crashes in one night in different areas, as being caused by the deer. Whether or not they were is anyone's guess. BUT, I have never seen that paper report that scenario with ANYONE but law enforcement. I would venture to say that the idea of having both patrol cars in one night being run into by deer, BUT that no other car-deer crashes in this county are ever caused by the deer running into the vehicles, is laughable. I know that deer run into cars, but the paper refuses to report those accurately. Since we are talking about all in the same county, the statistics should hold. Our county has an unusually high number of car-deer accidents. And, a number of car-deer accidents in our county have badly damaged both city police and sheriff's patrol cars. (Yes, we do have deer running around in small woods in several parts of town, so we even have to watch for deer in town.) A few of the police patrol cars have been badly damaged by running into deer in the neighborhoods by our hospital, which is in town.

I heard conversations earlier this year, that they were considering having another an invitation-only, with numerous restrictions, bow season, to cut down on some of the deer population within the town this year. They did that a few years ago. But, I have not heard if they made a final decision on that or not.

One year, in the spring, deer pulled up and ate about $10,000 worth of tulip bulbs at the Dow Gardens overnight, all in one night, in addition, to doing a lot of other damage to the Gardens that night.
